Schizophrenia, like many mental disorders, has gone through many changes over the course of history from what causes it to how it is treated. Looking at the history of how Schizophrenia develops both in your textbook and briefly through this article you can see that the best minds in mental health can be wrong in trying to explain how a mental health disorder develops and how to treat it. This was particularly true with Schizophrenia and you can imagine the impact this “misunderstanding” had on clients and families. For your post discuss what do you think about how experts of the historical time period decided what is and isnt labeled as abnormal behavior? How do individuals perspectives change when it is decided that some characteristic or issue is pathological? What implications for diagnosis and treatment come from these decisions? How would you go about explaining the etiology of Schizophrenia to a client and their family today?
