Post: In taking the Gallup Strength Finder assessment, this author realized a couple of strengths that she was too aware of. This author’s utmost leadership goal is to become an authentic leader. This type of leadership is rooted in humanistic values , which are at the core of the nursing profession (Puni & Hilton, 2020). This author’s strengths, according to the Gallup self-assessment, are as follows: 1. Harmony; 2. Context; 3. Futuristic; 4. Analytical; 5. Individualization (Gallup Strength finder,2020). This author does not wish to be a manager in the traditional sense of the word but aims to lead others. Traditionally managers were thought to maintain process with a focus on the short term, relying on their authority rather than their ability to influence. In contrast, leaders were thought of as insightful, influential, and visionary (Marshall & Broome, 2021). This author has been around for more than a few years and is pretty self-aware. The Futurist trait was one that caught this author off guard simply because of its name. However, upon reading more about this trait, it became clear that the result was correct. This author likes to look far into the future to weigh every possible option before making decisions and plan for all the “what ifs.” By planning and looking into the future, one can minimize disruptions to the workflow and patient care. The Context trait is one this author is very proud of. With the apparent increase in racism and intolerance in the world today, this author enjoys meeting and getting to know people from every corner of the globe and getting to know them individually. This helps to make cultural awareness with patient care somewhat easier. This author would rather see nurse Jin, rather than the “Chinese nurse.” This makes for mutual respect, which in turn can improve teamwork. The two characteristics this author would like to improve upon are Woo and Focus. Wooing is difficult for this author because of a lack of patience. This is a character flaw that this author is already aware of and is making an honest attempt to improve. This author does not have the patience to sway people to see things her way, which would be beneficial for a leader. The next characteristic that needs improving is Focus. This author struggles with taking directions and making changes while staying on track. Following directions is usually not a problem when there are no glitches along the way. However, when there is a glitch along the way, this author sometimes struggles with meeting deadlines. This is a work in progress for this author. References Marshall, E. S., & Broome, M. (2021).
