Public Policy
* Policy Perspective: Four of the Ten Commandments are foundational to todays laws against murder, adultery, theft, and lying (giving of false testimony) under oath. Choose one of the OTHER six (6) Commandments and explore a link between your choice and a public policy in place now or currently being debated at the local, state, or federal level. * You shall have no other gods before Me. * You shall make no idols. * You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. * Keep the Sabbath day holy. * Honor your father and your mother. * You shall not covet. 1. Read: Read Public policy: Politics, analysis, and alternatives, Chapters 10, 11, & 12. 2. Research: Conduct some independent research to find a news story (in the last 5 years) from a reputable news source (e.g. New York Times, Washington Post, Governing) that relates to one of the areas we are studying this week (Education, Environmental and Energy Policy, Foreign Policy and Homeland Security) and interests you. 3. Respond: Respond to the prompts below, using the headings provided to organize your main post: * Summary: Briefly (2-3 sentences) summarize the story. * Two (2) Ideas: Identify and discuss at least two (2) policy-related ideas from the story. Cite Kraft & Furlong (Chapters 1-6) in this section. * Text Connection: Relate this news story to this week’s assigned reading of the Kraft & Furlong text (Chapters 10, 11, or 12). How does it add to or build on the ideas from our reading this week? What can we learn about public policy from your story? Include at least one (1) quote from Chapters 10, 11 or 12 of the text to demonstrate this connection. * 4. Reference list: Include a properly-formatted APA Reference list of all sources you use to inform your post.
