Professional Aspiration
In this 7.5-week course, we have looked at the historical experience of African Americans from the period of 1619 to 1918. We have undertaken a number of activities including; assign reading/written exercises; quizzes, video reviews; and forum discussions. Among other topics; (a) we have looked at the history of Africa as prelude to debunk or demystify the notion that the ancestry of African Americans had no links to human civilization prior to their enslavement; (b)we have looked at the transition from indentured servitude to chattel slavery; (c) we have looked at the emancipation struggle leading up to the civil war and the periods thereafter; and (d) we have looked at the institutionalization of racial segregation. In our last forum discussion, we explored the persistency of institutional racisms/segregation by juxtaposing the past and contemporary experiences of African Americans At this point; Select and reflect on one key historical issue/event that you think contributed negatively to shape the African American community. NB: your pick cannot be the issue of slavery but any other issue or event that occurred at the onset of slavery through to emancipation. Reflect on the past policies that aimed to address the ramifications of the issue/event that you have selected. Were those past policies effective considering the contemporary challenges of the African American community? Based on your reflection so far, what lessons have you learned that you consider to be relevant to your current field of study or professional aspiration? or What contributions can your field of study (nursing, computer science, social work, engineering, etc.) make to address the lingering challenges of the African American community.
