This is the only way I will accept your work. All work must be double-spaced 12 point Times New Roman.I will not accept handwritten work, nor will I accept files submitted electronically. All papers must follow the conventions of the MLA Style and use the (author page) citation system. You must also include a bibliography, even if you have only one item on it.Papers must conform to standard formatting conventions. This means that they must:?Have one inch margins all around.?Be set with left margin alignment.?The display the name of the author and a page number on the top right corner of every page. ?Follow MLA conventions regarding capitalization and the usage of italics and quotation marks in titles.Plagiarized papers will be failed. It is your responsibility to make sure that your submissions are the product of your labor. We will discuss plagiarism in class and you will upload your final drafts to D2L so that I can run them through the Turning plagiarism checker. If you have any doubts about your work, please see me before you submit it.The Assignment General Overview You will produce an 6-8page formal essay that follows the prompt. The essay must:?Have a clearly defined thesis.?Exhibits coherent and logical structure.?Be supported by at least five credible sources (two of which can be identified as scholarly sources).?Demonstrate the ability to produce sound expository prose.?Revealant awareness of audience/discourse community.?Follow all of the conventions of standard English (where applicable).?Cite all sources using the MLA Style.Step One: The Prompt The–ism suffix is used to refer to a well-defined body of thought. Generally, an –ism is both a collection of doctrines and principles and a road map for applied practice. For your major essay, I’d like you to select one of the –isms from the list below and develop an expository definition essay. This means that your job is to develop an extended discussion of the term that goes beyond a simple dictionary definition and provides the reader with a substantive discussion of the term. In doing so, I’m expecting essays that take a scholarly and detached approach to the subject matter. I’m not looking for a booster essay, nor am I looking for critiques. Instead, we want essays that provide the reader with a solid grounding with a term. In other words, if I am unfamiliar with Surrealism, by the time I finish reading your essay on Surrealism, I will be able to use the term in a confident and learned manner.A full list of approved “isms” can be found at the end of this document. You must select your term from this list.Step Two: Do the Research The best essays succeed not because they are well written(which they almost always are), but because the author comes across as a competent and credible commentator. The only way to achieve this sort of legitimacy is to be well versedin your topic. This means making the commitment to doing the necessary research, huntingdown and assessing your sources, and building a collection of facts and opinions on your issue. Step Three: Draft the EssaysYou will produce an 6-8-page essay.I will be looking for well-defined discussions that are effectively structured and credibly sourced. I also need to see evidence of our work this term: what is the rhetorical situation? What are the relevant generic conventions? Are you responding to the needs and expectations of your discourse community? What is your purpose? Finally, youmust cite all of your sources following the conventions established by MLA 8. Failure to do so will result in failure of the essay. Step Four: Follow the Submission and Revision ScheduleAn important element of this course is integrating the work of revision into your writing practice. Begin working on your essays with the understanding that I will ask for changes as you go along. Don’t get frustrated with these requests. This is part of what all good writers must learn to understand. Writing is a craft that requires hard work. Rarely has anyone ever written something worthwhile as a first draft. In other words, the work of writing is not just putting words to paper, but thinking about those words and if they are sufficient and successful.Notes on ExpositionOne of the best ways to plan your work is toyou’ll assume that your reader has no experience with what you’re writing about and, as such, your essay will serve as an entry point. You will be the trusted guide. Remember, your main job in this essay is to help your reader better understand a key term. Your rhetorical focus here is to produce a piece of writing that descriptive, informative, and analytical, but that does not take sides. Another way to think about this project is to read some good examples of the explainer genre. While it is controversial (at least among journalists), the popularity of the genre has been aided in recent years but the emergence of news sites like Pass Notes and The Upshotthat specialize in what is formally known as explainer journalism. As the FIPPwebsite notes, “Put simply, if news content focuses on the ‘Who, What, When, and Where,’ explainer journalism looks to inform the reader of the ‘How and Why.’ It attempts to get behind the news to give the reader background information about a story to ensure that they are able to properly understand events as they unfold” (Norris). I will post links to these sites on D2L.
