The material to be used for this week’s discussion is Readings: “The Development of the Medieval State.” You can find the readings in the Modules. 2.  In regard to the Church, what types of religious objects appear in the ceremonies and depictions of rulers? Do they serve to express the power of the Church as an institution or of someone else? What do they reveal to you about Medieval religious beliefs and practices? Lastly, what do the pictures of Otto Ill and Harold, and the Constitutions of Clarendon, indicate about the relationship between the ruler and Church officials?
