What are ‘my’ desires ? Since Lorber’s analysis of how the social construction of gender influences our experiences at the level of social, sexual, and emotional life, we have seen a number of theories of how social factors construct or determine aspects of individual experience at the level of both gender and sexuality—e.g., any of the theories which make use of psychoanalytic concepts, Foucault’s account of the deployment of sexuality as a function of disciplinary mechanisms of biopower, aspects of Butler’s theory of gender and sexuality as a socially mediated performance, and also many of the intersectional theories. These accounts raise profound questions about how much of what any of us, in our most intimate selves, feel or desire is really ‘our own.’ Consider any two accounts of how our desires or our sexuality are conditioned by social factors. Explain what is determined for us, and what is left for us to determine, inhabit, or make our own within each of these accounts. How convincing do you find them? Explain.
