Scenario You will perform research and compose an informative and persuasive research paper based on the following real-world scenario: You are working in a medical office as part of a team that determines the position the company will take when presented with specific ethical challenges. You must pick and evaluate a single case from the list presented in the link below. To justify your ethical position, write an ethical paper using either utilitarianism or deontology as your main ethical support. Click the link to view the list of case studies you must choose from: Case Studies. Your portfolio project needs to support your position with ethical research. This research must come from scholarly sources to strengthen and explain your ethical position to your colleagues. As you write make sure to include a discussion of the underlying ethical issues your case brings up, as those issues may affect health care decision-making. In addition to your position and ethical support, it is important to present at least one counterargument to your position to show that you understand opposing viewpoints. You must then present a rebuttal to that counter argument which will help sway the panel to your position. PHIL222 – Portfolio Project 2 Keep in mind these course outcomes as you write up your ethical stance: • Describe the ethical theories and philosophical approaches we have discussed in class for assessing moral/ethical decisions in typical health care scenarios. • Identify underlying ethical issues influencing decision-making in the provision of health care services. • Apply analytical techniques to resolve ethical dilemmas presented in health care case studies. • Formulate moral/ethical obligations of a health care entity to the community it serves. • Evaluate the relative strengths and weaknesses of personal moral judgments as well as the judgments and choices of others. Since this may be a new concept or term for you, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with what an Essential Question is and how you can create your own. For some information on Essential Questions, please take a few minutes and read over the information presented on the website referenced below: Essential Questions Explained Considering and evaluating essential questions will both aid in your understanding of our course topics and prepare you for the process of developing and writing your portfolio project. In this discussion you must respond to two (2) of the following essential questions. Once you have responded to the essential questions, identify an additional question you have about the course topics that will help in the research process. Choose two of the following in addition to creating a question of your own: 1. What is health? 2. How do we determine the value and quality of life? 3. Is it desirable for health to evolve? 4. Should we strive to make people “better than normal?” 5. Is healthcare a right or a commodity? Please respond and give your rationale for each question in 2-3 sentences to complete your initial discussion post. After you have submitted your discussion post, please respond to two of your classmates’ posts and provide them with thoughts and feedback about their essential questions. Week 3 – Paper Topic 2.5% of Overall Course Grade. Due at the end of Week 3, you will submit the case study you have chosen, the side you have chosen to support on the topic, and the major ethical stance you plan to support your side. Your instructor will provide any necessary feedback necessary to support your project moving forward. Week 4 – Annotated Bibliography 5% of Overall Course Grade. PHIL222 – Portfolio Project Due by the end of Week 4, your annotated bibliography should include a minimum of 2 sources, cited properly using APA style, each with a 150 to 175 word annotation describing the source, its strengths and weaknesses, and its importance in your paper. PHIL 222 Bryant & Stratton College Ethics in Health and Human Services Questions. Your sources should strengthen the ethical claims you will be making to support your thesis statement. Week 5 – Rough Draft Discussion 5% of Overall Course Grade. During Week 5, you will attach your Portfolio Project draft to an initial discussion post so that your classmates may read it and make constructive suggestions. Your Portfolio Project Paper should include the following: A. Title Page: Follow standard APA guidelines for creating your title page and paper. B. Summary Overview Page: This abstract of your paper should be very brief and concisely sum up the whole of your paper. This page should be written after you have completed your draft, and before you create your Reflection. The abstract page does not count towards the required minimum page count of 6 pages. C. BODY OF PAPER: The body of your paper is comprised of the following parts, and must be a minimum of 6 pages long. I. Introduction: The Introduction starts the main body of your paper, is usually one paragraph long, and will also include your thesis (issue) statement. In this section, you explain the topic you have chosen, issues that arise from this topic, and what the reader will learn in your paper, including the stance/side you will take with your topic, and what major ethical theory you will use to support that stance. End the paragraph with a clear, concise thesis statement that declares your stance on your topic and the ethical position (utilitarianism or deontology) that will support your position. II. Issue Discussion: This section is the main portion of your paper. Here, you will make claims that support your thesis, and then cite research to back up each of your ethical claims. Each claim should embody one or two paragraphs, clearly define your position, include scholarly research that explains the ethical issues in support of your position, and explore the implications of that research on your claims. Keep in mind the Essential Questions that started your thinking process about this topic. Your paper should make three to four claims that help support your thesis position, citing research that explains the ethics for each claim. To be clear, the Portfolio Project is an argumentative ethics paper in which you support your stance on the topic. It is not a report that details the history of the subject or all the technical details involved with the topic. For example, you should not explain how abortions work or give details about the history of abortion, rather the Issue Discussion should explain, in ethical terms and support, why you 4 PHIL222 – Portfolio Project 5 believe your stance is the correct position to take on the topic. III. Counterargument: Your paper should take an ethical stance on the topic, while exploring the merits of other positions. In addition to your claims, you need to include a counterargument. Counterarguments consider positions that differ from the one you have taken. Remember that ethical positions do not work in black and white terms (dichotomies), but rather considers other positions for their individual merits. To strengthen your own position, you should include at least one alternative ethical position and then counter it with a claim that supports your thesis statement. In essence, your counterargument should be aware of the other side, but should likewise explain why that position is flawed. Ethical backup of your counter-claim is absolutely necessary. Since including a counterargument is a required element of your paper, please label this section “Counterargument” for clarity. IV. Conclusion: This section is also a portion of the six pages required for the main body of your paper. Reinforce the main points you have made, tie up loose ends, and restate your thesis so that it clearly defines your stance on the topic. D. References: After your conclusion, start a new page that lists the references you used for your paper. These citations should follow APA style standards. The references page does not count towards the required minimum page count of 6 pages. Week 6 – Final Portfolio Project Paper Due in Electronic Portfolio By the end of W6, you will upload your final portfolio project to your ePortfolio. Week 7 – Video Reflection Discussion 10% of Overall Course Grade.
