NCAA and Collegiate Autonomy
March 3rd, 2021
The NCAA has opened the door for more and more autonomy for the most powerful and wealthy schools in collegiate sports. While the NCAA has historically always had power differentials among Divisions I, II and III, how might this new autonomy schools provision allow for the gap between wealthy schools and smaller schools to grow even larger? How do guarantee games (where wealthy schools pay smaller schools enormous amounts to play them in football) highlight this power difference? What future problems might this lead to? How could the NCAA possibly further restructure their divisions to not let this problem exacerbate?
