Multi factorial Traits and Autism Essay

Multi factorial Traits and Autism Essay Multi factorial Traits and Autism Essay Autism spectrum disorder is a hot topic in today’s medical and educational world. This cognitive condition draws so many people’s attention because of the huge rise is diagnoses in the last 20 years and because of the wide range of cognitive and social difficulties that can be put on the autism spectrum. According to Psychology Tenth Edition in Modules by David G. Myers, autism is “a disorder marked by social deficiencies and repetitive behaviors.” Some of these social deficiencies include little to no eye contact, social awkwardness or inability to make conversation, to being completely non-verbal. In many situations brains affected by ASD don’t respond to normal social cues that other brains do.Multi factorial Traits and Autism Essay This was also touched on in Myers’ book “When people with ASD watch another person’s hand movements, for example, their brain displays less than normal mirroring activity.” This shows a biological aspect for social deficiencies these people experience. Another factor in Autism Spectrum Disorder is repetitive behaviors. Repetitive behaviors can vary person to person but some common behaviors include hand flapping, rocking, and tooth grinding. These repetitive behaviors are usually triggered by a stressor and are used as a way to calm themselves down. These people do have difficulties but many are very intelligent and have the potential to be high functioning members of society. The reason that ASD has become such a popular topic of discussion in such a short amount of time is because of a few questions. Why has there been such a large spike in diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder? What causes it? How do we cure it? Wendy Chung, a geneticist and pediatrician, try to give us some answers to these questions.Multi factorial Traits and Autism Essay Permalink: https://nursingpaperessays.com/ multi-factorial-…and-autism-essay / What is autism spectrum disorder? Autism spectrum disorder is a diagnosis which describes a group of individuals with a common cluster of symptoms, though it is important to note that the degree of severity of these symptoms vary greatly amongst individuals (Speaks, 2011). Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder affecting our communication, our interactions, and processing abilities which co-occur with motor coordination, attention, and physical health conditions which include but are not limited to irregular sleep behaviours and gastrointestinal disturbances (Speaks, 2011). Other traits which are inked to ASD include – Repetitive activities – Resistance to change in daily routines – Unusual responses to sensory stimuli such as touch – Inability to interact with the environment appropriately. Some individuals with ASD appear to excel in areas of visual skills, arithmetic, art, and music. Many believe that it is a disorder caused by genetic default, but in reality, its cause is mainly unknown. Just as we are able to conclude that there is no single type of autism, we are able to conclude that there is no single cause of autism, but the result of ASD is rather multifactorial i.e. a result of both environmental factors and autism risk genes which both influence neural development. Multi factorial Traits and Autism Essay In 2000, one in every one hundred and fifty children was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Since then, there has been a drastic increase of the incidence of this disorder. In 2013, according to the Centers for Disease Control, autism spectrum disorder occurs in one out of eighty eight children. (CDC, 2013) That is a significant increase over a relatively short period of time. With such an increase, it is important to learn what autism spectrum disorder is and what might cause it. Although, most people with autism do develop language skills, they are generally not at a level of a typically developing person and the progress of their language development is usually slow and irregular. An example of the irregular pattern of speech development seen in autism is Echolalia. Some estimates say that 85% of those with autism spectrum disorder who are verbal with show Echolalia in some form.Multi factorial Traits and Autism Essay (Teach Me to Talk, 2008) There are two types of echolalia. Immediate echolalia and delayed echolalia. Immediate echolalia occurs when the child echoes the words immediately after another says them. Delayed echolalia is when a child repeats the words or phrases long after they were originally said. This can occur days, weeks, or even months later. Another example of irregular speech development is prosody. Webster dictionary defines prosody as the rhythm and pattern of the sounds of language. Some people with autism may know the correct vocabulary to use but are unable to use a correct tone of voice. Not only are they unable to use prosody, but they are not able to detect its use others. (Rudy, 2010) This can make them appear emotionally distant, or uninterested.
