When evaluating the English language learners oral language sample, you will be using the two rubrics listed above for oral language: (a) a holistic scoring rubric: Holistic Oral Language Scoring Rubric and (b) an analytic scoring rubric: the Student Oral Language Observation Matrix (SOLOM).When evaluating the English language learners written language sample, you will be using the two rubrics: (a) Holistic Scoring Rubric for Writing and (b) Analytic Scoring Rubric for Writing 2. The oral language section and the written language section should each include the following components: o A discussion around each individual aspect of each rubric that you use. For example, if the rubric includes several different aspects – such as fluency, grammar, mechanics – then you will discuss each of these separately. o Specific examples from the language samples to support and justify your discussion and evaluation of each individual aspect of each rubric. o A discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each instrument/approach as an informal evaluation tool of ELLs oral or written language proficiency at the end of both the oral language section and the written language section. Use the following questions to guide your discussion in this section: § What makes each rubric analytic or holistic? § What are the advantages of an analytic rubric vs. a holistic rubric? In what way does it affect the way that you evaluate the skills of a student? § How helpful is each rubric in evaluating the proficiency level of the student? When or in what context is each most useful? § What aspects of the rubrics need further development? Are there any other domains that you would add to each of the rubrics?
