McLeroy, Norton, Kegler, Burdine, and Sumaya (2003), in “Community-Based Interventions,” provided a useful typology for contrasting perspectives in community focus for incorporation in interventions. The community was presented as a setting, a target, a resource, and an agent.

The application of these various perspectives results in a continuum of community-based interventions.
