The speaker says “such waltzing was not easy.” At the time they danced, the father was drunk. The speaker says, “The whiskey on your breath could make a small boy dizzy.” Also, this dance took place at home for we see that the speaker was taken to bed. The speaker says, “Then waltzed me off to bed still clinging to your shirt.” Also the speaker mentions that they romped until the pans slid from the kitchen shelf implying that they were dancing at home in the kitchen. The speaker is a child because in the poem he mentions romping until the pans slid from the kitchen shelf. The word romping is commonly used to refer to children. Also he was as tall as his father’s waist. The speaker says,“ At every step you missed, my right ear scraped a buckle.” 2-Connotative.The central theme in the poem is fear that some sons have for their fathers. This can be derived from the act of the father beating the son. While this poem explores characteristics of the theme of parenthood, it more closely explores the obstructions of the smooth relationship between father and son. The father beats the son and the son fears the father, creating an unbalance in their relationship, and a rift in it. The author views parenthood as a power over an individual. This is seen with the father having, and exploiting, such power over the son. He uses his power to take out his frustrations on his son, knocking down pans in the kitchen with the force of his beatings. 3-Poetic. Is written in an imagery and has a rhythm. I like how The poet goes into great detail describing the father, “The hand that held my wrist , Was battered on one knuckle” (Roethke). He also describes how he is injured while dancing, “At every step you missed, My right ear scraped a buckle” (Roethke). Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds in the same line such as the sound of /i/ in “Still clinging to your shirt” (Roethke). There is only one simile used in this poem. It is used in the third line, “But I hung on like death” (Roethke).
