Gender Exercise OR Prejudice and Discrimination

In this discussion you will have a choice in how you want to use your sociological imagination. You will either reflect on your own experiences with sex/gender, and apply at least three related sociological terms, concepts, and/or theories to your examples and post them to our discussion…or you will analyze your own social locations, specifically your racial-ethnic identity and culture and use three sociological terms, concepts, and/or theories as it relates to your experiences. This is a formative assignment leading up to the exam and final application paper about your life. Instructions Prompt 1: Gender Please fill out this Sex/Gender worksheet Actions .  You can write your answers according to how you grew up or generalizations in society (past or present).   Discuss your answers (do not just fill out the worksheet) in the context of gender socialization, societal norms, social forces, social change—using your sociological imaginations/perspective. Please share your responses to the worksheet questions in your post, as well as your discussion. Were you socialized according to gender? Who or what influenced you to act/behave in these ways? Can you recall a specific moment when you learned about your gender (gender moments). Use terms, concepts, and social theories (from the lecture and text) in your explanations and application of your personal experiences and reflection on the exercise. At least three terms, concepts, and/or theories should be underlined/bold in your write-up (e.g.  gender pay gap, discrimination, glass ceiling, etc.). Prompt 2: Prejudice and Discrimination Please review the lecture and text on the topic of “Race and Ethnicity in the United States.” State what group you identify with and why? After viewing this module’s short video (Dr. Noble) on Algorithmic Bias  (Links to an external site.) , you are going to conduct your own search (read the Wikipedia description to better understand how algorithms impact your results). Type in the racial-ethnic group you identify with in the search bar. What are the top two hits that came up? Discuss prejudice, discrimination, and racial/ethnic stereotypes and labels as they relate to the group you identify with. Was this represented in your quick internet search (#2)?  Do you have any firsthand experience with prejudice and/or discrimination?  What are your ideas to alleviate prejudice and/or discrimination?   At least three terms, concepts, and/or theories should be underlined/bold in your write-up (i.e. model minority, white privilege, individual/ institutional discrimination, etc.). As you read and respond to students this week (to either prompt), think about the different ways you all have been gender socialized or have experienced life based on racial-ethnic backgrounds so you can better understand other perspectives on this topic. Be sure to read the material in the module before you begin.
