Fiction Analysis Paper

1.    Demonstrate an awareness of and respond to the needs of different audiences, rhetorical situations, and genres of academic writing (Rhetorical Knowledge) 2.    Explore how literature reveals and deepens our understanding of the human experience (Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing) 3.    Produce coherent texts through a multiple draft process (Processes) 4.    Successfully make use of the conventions of college level academic writing, including researched writing (Knowledge of Conventions) 5.    Locate and evaluate research material in electronic formats (Composing in Electronic Environments).     The Skinny: For this paper, you will write a research paper analyzing at least two of the following short stories:   “The Yellow Wall-Paper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman “Alicia” by Gabrielle Roy “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allen Poe     To complete the paper, choose one of the following questions to answer:   How do the stories represent mental health/mental illness similarly or differently? How do the stories represent different views of mental health based on biological sex or gender? How do the stories use their narrators/narration? How are their narrators used to represent the conflict between the individual and society surrounding mental health issues?    The paper should offer a clear thesis that directly answers the research question, and then it should develop that answer using at least four secondary sources and concrete passages from the stories in the body paragraphs. Though the Internet may offer some research, you will want to explore the Literature Resource Center database, as well as some of the library’s other resources, for credible scholarly sources. Furthermore, the Fiction Analysis Research Paper Research Articles folder found in the Course Materials link contains items that may be useful.   The paper should be at least five pages in length—it must reach the bottom of the fifth page. It should be written in MLA format, including a properly formatted works cited page.      Your paper should: -have a clearly defined thesis that offers a unique insight into the stories’ meaning by directly answering the research question. -provide points/topic sentences. -include a clear, purposeful introduction and conclusion. -use concrete details from the stories to support the points/topic sentences. -focus on at least three of the elements of fiction/narrative, though you are encouraged to consider more elements to help you develop your analysis. -use appropriate sources for the paper’s assignment and research question. -contain an organizational pattern to coherently deliver the ideas -contain transitions that move one idea to the next smoothly. -be formatted according to MLA guidelines. -demonstrate clear revision between early/sketch and final graded drafts. -reach the required page length.
