Evaluating EBP Resources

For part one of this week’s assignment, you will revisit the six research articles (3 qualitative and 3 quantitative) that you found in Weeks 6 and 7 that addressed your PCF. Use these articles to practice the initial steps of the Evidence-based Practice (EBP) approach (see Appendix I in Williams, Patterson & Edwards, 2014.). For each article: ASK: Identify an important clinical question that can be addressed by the study. Decide whether the clinical question you articulated above is a who, what, where, when or why question and explain why this is the case. ACQUIRE:  Summarize the process you undertook to find this article (which is the process you will use to find future evidence). APPRAISE: Summarize the article’s strengths and any weaknesses/concerns related to internal and external validity, measurement, analyses, ethics, and any other relevant issues. APPLY: Discuss what you would take from this article to help you answer the clinical question you articulated above.  Then, evaluate the fit of this information with your experience to date, as well as your hypothetical client population, and clinical context.  In doing so, ensure you comment on: Whether the methods used for the study limit to whom the results of the study might apply (e.g., if the participants in this study were primarily inner city adolescents in foster care, does that mean the results will only apply to similar clients, or not?  Why or why not?). Whether the methods used for the study limit the context in which the results of the study might apply (e.g., if the study was carried out in an inpatient psychiatric treatment center in Sweden, does that limit their utility for outpatient clients in the US?  Again, why or why not?). ANALYZE AND ADJUST: Propose a few specific measures or ways that you might evaluate the effectiveness of your hypothetical treatment of clients using the information obtained in this study. In other words, how would you assess if the ways you might alter your therapy based on the information from this article were effective? For part two of this week’s assignment, review the six questions you proposed in Part I.  Repeat EBP step one (ASK) and articulate another clinical question related to your PCF that is of interest to you.  Complete step 2 (ACQUIRE) and find two additional research studies that you believe could provide an answer to that clinical question.  For each study, cut and paste the study abstract into your assignment document and then explain in 5-7 sentences why you think the results of this study would help you provide a reasonable answer to this new clinical question (essentially this comment will be a combined description of EBP steps three and four—APPRAISE and APPLY). Thus this part of the assignment will look like this: EBP Step 1 (ASK) This is a second clinical question I could ask related to my PCF: (e.g., “What is….” “How should therapists address X in therapy.?”) EBP Step 2 (ACQUIRE) I located two more research studies that can help me answer this clinical question.
