Distinguishing features: • Purpose: o Cause and effect o Evaluation o Proposal argument (problem-solution) o Ethical argument • Length o Minimum of 7-9 pages excluding title page, abstract, and references • Format o APA (title page, abstract, subtitles or headings for different sections in the paper. and references) • Sources o At least 6 sources from the library databases ? Other credible, objective articles from other library databases • Opposing viewpoints • Issues and controversies • CQ researcher • Credible, unbiased, objective media sources (found in library databases) o New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, BBC, New Yorker, Economist, Associated Press, Foreign Affairs, Atlantic, Politico. • Topic: o A significant topic you are curious about and want to explore in depth by applying one of the above purposes; in other words, your topic must be meaningful and go in depth. No surface issues. o Avoid topics such as abortion rights, death penalty, legalizing marijuana, drugs, ….; instead, select an original topic where you can find something new to say (PA, p. 255) o Review the “suggested topics” on page 2 • Structure o Introduction ? In-depth background information and context ? Thesis statement • An argumentative statement: topic + argumentative claim and reasons o Body paragraphs ? Developed body paragraphs focused on one central point you intend to argue and prove and apply elements of Toulmin argument • Argumentative topic sentence (claim + Ground) • Context • 2 pieces of evidence: summarize and/ or paraphrase; few direct quotations/ cited in APA format • Analysis, significance, relevancy of evidence (refer to index of template if needed) • Concluding sentence/ transition ? Clear topic sentences that support your thesis will allow you to choose quotes that serve as SUPPORT, not quotes that are inserted to merely satisfy a requirement. As always, beware of plagiarism; always give credit for ideas that are not yours. ? The major section of the body paragraphs should include developed topic sentences, supporting details, analysis and elaboration on your thesis and topic sentences not too many quotes; include mainly summaries and paraphrases. ?
