Become familiar with the Dana Medical Library homepage. Look around a bit, especially if you’ve never been there. From the homepage click PubMed. You can also go directly using: https://pubmed-ncbi-nlm-nih-gov.ezproxy.uvm.edu/?otool=uvmdmlib. Click “Sign in to NCBI” in the top right corner of the page to create an account. You can use whatever login is convenient. Google is an option. I suggest choosing “Register for an NCBI account”. Then you’ll set up your “My NCBI” account. IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE WITH THIS STEP AND CANNOT SET UP AN ACCOUNT, SKIP TO THE NEXT STEP AND DON’T WORRY ABOUT THIS PART OF THE ASSIGNMENT. In the search bar, try a few key words and see what you get. Start with the key terms in the title of this course to start. This will take you to the main search style page. Look through them. Then try some of the definitions we worked with in our other Tuesday reflective assignments. Try searching with whatever key words you like. Once you’ve used a search that results in articles that interest you, look at how to narrow them. Click “Free Full Text”. See how that narrows the search by number of articles, year of publication, etc. Play with other ways of sorting the search by clicking the “Sorted by:” button on the top right of the screen. It may even show you related search criteria and ask you if you’d like to switch to their “new best match search order”. Give it a try. Once you have search results that interest you, let’s set up an alert so that you will be notified when new articles come out with your search criteria. Remember, the more general the search, the more articles will be suggested for you.  As a reference, I use “American Health Disparities” and I get an email once a month with over 100 new articles. Click “Create Alert” right below the search bar. Set up how often and how many results you’d like sent. Now you can get updates on publications as they come out. Change the settings or unsubscribe at any time. IF YOU CANNOT CREATE AN ACCOUNT, THIS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE TO YOU AND THAT’S OK.  Now, take the search results you were interested in and select an article (I suggest keeping the “best match” sorting on for this). Read the whole article. Yes, read the whole article. I don’t want you to critique it as much as I want you to summarize it within the context of what we’ve learned so far in this course. Please don’t use the abstract to summarize. Use your own words and make meaning of it from the standpoint of how you might use the information in your personal/professional life. Do this in approximately 500 words. Also, be sure to cite the article using APA format.
