Running head: INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION Difficulties in Interpersonal Communication When Expressing Sexual Orientation Name Institution Affiliation Date 1 INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION 2 Introduction Interpersonal communication refers to face to face sharing of information between two or more people. This kind of communication is characterized by the desire to explain something to people who are interested in hearing it. In organizations, interpersonal communication may happen between the workers or between a manager and other employees. Interpersonal communication also happens in all other aspects of social life because people interact with others through communication. For example, people always communicate in schools, churches, and workplaces. Discussion: Interpersonal Communication When Expressing Sexual Orientation According to Hillstrom (n.d.), interpersonal communication can either be oral, nonverbal, and written as long as it involves more than one person. Besides, interpersonal communication happens in two ways because it requires one to listen and the other to speak in order to understand each other. Based on the above explanation, it is clear that interpersonal communication cannot happen with a single individual. There must be another individual before the interpersonal communication can happen. Therefore, interpersonal communication cannot be discussed without mentioning culture as a factor affecting communication. According to Adler, Rosenfeld, and Proctor (2018), culture determines the success of interpersonal communication. Today, people identify themselves with the cultural groups to which they belong. From the concept of sub-cultures, there are people who categorize themselves based on sexual orientation. This group is known as the LGBTQ+ community. Interpersonal communication is easy when the participants are from the LGBTQ+ community and difficult when one of the participants come from a different sub-cultural group. It is because group beliefs make people have a different perception of things and situations. LGBTQ+ people usually find it hard to express their sexual orientation to others during interpersonal communication. They fear discrimination and INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION 3 victimizations that come from differences in cultural beliefs. Therefore, this paper explains the difficulties experienced by the LGBTQ+ community during interpersonal communication. Statement of the Problem Sexual orientation and interpersonal communication are related because each of these concepts affects each other. Sexual orientation may hinder interpersonal communication. On the other hand, interpersonal communication may challenge one’s sexual orientation, especially when a person feels neglected because he/she cannot publicly express their sexual orientation. LGBTQ+ is a community that consists of people whose sexual orientation is not heterosexual. They include lesbian, bisexual, gay, queer, and transgender. Traditionally, the idea of the LGBTQ+ community was considered abnormal because it violated the traditional belief that a person can only express his/her sexual affairs to a person of a different gender. Today, this community is accepted in the United States after the Supreme Court indicated that LGBTQ+ people should be treated equally under civil rights laws. Even if the United States’ laws prohibit any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation, people have not yet accepted the fact that LGBTQ+ people are part of society. Most are the times when people get discriminated against or neglected in society when no one like their sexual orientation. As a result, people, especially the LGBTQ+, do not like expressing their sexual orientation to others to avoid shame, victimization, or neglect.Discussion: Interpersonal Communication When Expressing Sexual Orientation When people bring out the topic of sexual orientation, LGBTQ+ people withdraw from such discussions to avoid a case where they may be asked to explain their sexuality. Interpersonal communication is meant to enhance companionship between people. According to Viles (n.d.), interpersonal communication is a source of happiness. Therefore, if 4 INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION people cannot effectively participate in social interactions, it means that they will never be happy in their life. Since LGBTQ+ people fear interpersonal communication that requires them to express their sexual desire, it means that their happiness is limited. When some people are not happy because of their sexual orientation, it means that society is not fair. Therefore, sexual orientation is a source of difficulties among the LGBTQ+ community when it comes to interpersonal communication. It is because their social orientation forces them to remain silent and lonely when they should be communicating with others happily. Rationale LGBTQ+ people deserve to be treated equally, just like any other person, because their sexuality does not give enough reason to exclude them from the rest. The difficulties experienced by the LGBTQ+ community during interpersonal communication present a problem that requires a solution in order to promote a better social life. According to Adler et al. (2018), LGBTQ+ people like to communicate with others, and that is why they have social media accounts. Most social media platforms like Facebook provides a way for people to express their social orientations without too much exposure. However, some people feel that information about their sexual orientation might reach their family and friends. Hence, they prefer not to make information about their sexual orientation to go public. Therefore, social media has not provided a solution to problems of interpersonal communications among the LGBTQ+ community. By conducting a study on this topic, people will understand the difficulties experienced by the LGBTQ+ community. The findings will also give insights on what should be done to minimize these difficulties. Effective interpersonal communication is based on honesty. However, sexual orientation makes it hard for one to remain honest, especially when others do not like the expressed INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION 5 orientation. For example, gays and lesbians may keep secrets about their sexuality when working with married couples. This study will show the importance of being honest as a person of the LGBTQ+ community by showing that it is possible to address the difficulties they experience in their social life. Adler et al. (2018) explain that there are benefits when people from LGBTQ+ communities decide to be honest and express their sexual orientation publicly. One of the benefits is the feeling of being authentic with other people. The next benefit is the sense of belonging because the expression of true sexual orientation makes it easy for one to gain acceptance from others who belong to the same group. Therefore, this study will provide interpersonal communication difficulties caused by sexual orientation and the implications associated with those difficulties. Therefore, the LGBTQ+ community will benefit from the findings of this study after realizing their potential. Interpersonal communication has many barriers that can hinder its implementation. However, these barriers are severe among the LGBTQ+ community. Discussion: Interpersonal Communication When Expressing Sexual Orientation The first barrier is bullying, which is used to make other people other people feel weak and remain silent during interpersonal communication (Berger, 2012). When an LGBTQ+ person is subjected to bullying, he/she might be humiliated more than a non-LGBTQ+ person. Since bullying targets the weakest point (Davidson, n.d.), bullies may use abusive words associated with the LGBTQ+ community to make the others feel more discouraged. The second barrier is burnout, which makes people feel exhausted due to stressful moments. Non-LGTBQ+ people may reduce burnout by discussing their issues with other people. However, the burnout might get worse among the LGBTQ+ community because such people avoid too much interaction with other people to avoid disclosing their identity. Therefore, this paper will show how the LGBTQ+ community is disadvantaged when it comes to interpersonal communication, thus introducing the need to INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION 6 address their difficulties. Besides, modern organizations require workers to collaborate, and for this to happen, interpersonal communication is key. Since the difficulties identified in this study shows how sexual orientation can hinder such collaboration, the findings will help managers come up with informed policies to promote organizational collaboration regardless of people’s sexual orientation. A Review of Prior Research Interpersonal communication requires all facets of communication to be implemented. These facets include listening, which is the primary component of effective interpersonal communication. Lederman (n.d.) found that listening is the process where a person pays attention to what others are saying and then giving relevant feedback. For example, when a nurse asks a question while the patient gives feedback, it means that interpersonal communication is successful. Therefore, giving feedback is the only way to tell whether the other person is listening during interpersonal communication. LGBTQ+ people usually fear to answer questions regarding sexual orientation. They also avoid giving feedback in discussions that involve sexuality. Therefore, the LGBTQ+ community has difficulty listening to every detail of interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication helps people to share their problems with others in the process of seeking help. If people do not speak out about the issues bothering them, they may end up suffering alone without any help. Odle, Davidson, and Mertz (2020) found that the LGBTQ+ community is associated with health issues like mental illnesses, HIV, cancer, and malnutrition. The main reason why this population is prone to these issues is that they avoid much interactions with other people, which means that they lack enough information regarding INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION 7 living a healthy life. Therefore, ineffective interpersonal communication leads to a problem that puts the LGBTQ+ population at risk. Sexual orientation is something that people cannot avoid in their life. Some decisions get influenced by people’s sexual orientation.Discussion: Interpersonal Communication When Expressing Sexual Orientation For example, when people decide to marry, the decision about the people they want to marry depends on their sexual orientation. Foucault (n.d) defines sexuality as something consisting of power that dominates people, and it is difficult to fight. Looking at the explanation given by Adler et al. (2018), one can read that the LGBTQ+ population fears making their sexual orientation public by avoiding too much discussion with other people. Therefore, it is clear that one’s sexual orientation is powerful, to a point where it determines a person’s behavior. The behavior of the LGBTQ+ population that makes them avoid too much interaction is something hard for them to control. Therefore, avoiding interactions is an interpersonal communication difficulty experienced by LGBTQ+ people, and it requires other peoples’ help. That is, LGBTQ+ cannot come out of their communication limitations without advice on how they can realize their potential. Kreps (n.d.) found that interpersonal communication is an essential element of effective healthcare services. That is, a physician is required to listen as the patients explain their case. Besides, the patient must explain their issues without hiding something for the physician to know the best intervention based on the presented case. When physicians give feedback, the patient knows that the physician listened to his/her case. This way, healthcare practices become effective because each participant of the interpersonal communication is able to understand the content of the discussion. As explained by Adler et al. (2018), LGBTQ+ people hide information that may expose their sexual orientation to others. It is because they do not trust others in keeping their secrets. However, this habit means that the LGBTQ+ population cannot facilitate effective INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION 8 interpersonal communication during the provider-patient relationship. That is, when they hide information about their sexual orientation, the physician may not have enough information required to provide patient-centered care. People, in their interpersonal communication, may sometimes encounter conflict. Stimson (n.d.) explains interpersonal conflict as an event that causes misunderstanding. A misunderstanding during interpersonal communication may make the communication ineffective. Therefore, conflict resolution is always good in any communication, and it is expressed by the people’s ability to argue and arrive at a common conclusion. When people have no ability to argue, they may not manage conflict effectively. This explanation indicates that the LGBTQ+ community may get subjected to more interpersonal conflict than other communities. It is because their habit of withdrawing from social discussion makes them unable to argue with their colleagues in the right way. Besides, interpersonal conflict resolution requires the participants to create a climate where every person is satisfied. Such a climate is created by identifying each persons’ needs and strengths, set common goals for communication and come up with intervention methods for dealing with issues that may cause conflict during a discussion (Lehr, n.d.).Discussion: Interpersonal Communication When Expressing Sexual Orientation Based on this information, the LGBTQ+ population may not have the ability to manage interpersonal conflict using the proposed methods. It is because their sexual orientation makes them unable to express their real characters before others, which means that it is hard for them to realize their strength. Also, they may not afford to set common goals with others during interpersonal communication because they avoid too much integration with society. Therefore, the LGBTQ+ population lacks the necessary features to make sure that conflict is solved during interpersonal communication. 9 INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION Conclusion This research focuses on the difficulties that sexual orientation poses to the LGBTQ+ community during interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication is a source of happiness, which means that everyone must participate in it. However, the LGBTQ+ community is associated with behaviors that make them unable to sustain effective interpersonal communication. These people fear to express their sexual orientation to the public. As a result, they find themselves lonely because they view the act of talking to others as a threat that can expose them. Traditionally, the LGBTQ+ community has not received enough acceptance for them to feel safe when telling the public about their status. Therefore, the difficulties they face during interpersonal communication needs a solution. Besides, the findings from this study can be generalized to other areas. The difficulties of interpersonal communication among LGBTQ+ communities shows how people can be lonely if they are not ready to accept each other. For example, when one community is poor at listening and sharing ideas, the community may fail to receive acceptance from other people. This concept is also clear in gender-based violence that arises when people of different gender fails to have effective interpersonal communication. That is, just like the LGBTQ+ community, women may not have the ability to argue with men in a manner that promote harmony and inclusion. Implications The findings from the literature review indicate that the LGBTQ+ community is associated with difficulties like poor listening skills, suffering from health issues due to lack of enough information, uncontrollable sexuality power, poor patient-provider relationship, and inability to manage interpersonal conflict. These issues are related to the inability of the INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION 10 LGBTQ+ community to participate in effective interpersonal communication. These findings imply that the LGBTQ+ community needs help from other people. First, the LGBTQ+ population requires acceptance in society. Discussion: Interpersonal Communication When Expressing Sexual Orientation Lack of acceptance has made this population feel neglected, making it hard for them to express their sexual orientation. Secondly, there is a need for community awareness programs to help people know the difficulties that the LGBTQ+ community is going through. This step can help to reduce victimization and discrimination that makes LGBTQ+ people fear to speak their minds. The finding from this study also implies that the social divide based on cultural differences is not good. The LGBTQ+ community is suffering from interpersonal communication difficulties alone. However, these difficulties arise from the fact that people are not ready to accept the existing cultural differences. LGBTQ+ community should accept that it might not be harmful if they share their sexual orientation. After all, sharing such information would attract other LGBTQ+ people and create a community that can express its needs without the fear of discrimination. On the other hand, non-LGBTQ+ should also be ready to listen and reason with neglected LGBTQ+ people. 11 INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION References Hillstrom.
