ONLINE University of South Florida Instructor: Dr. Erica L. Toothman Email: [email protected] Project Report #1 Graphic Analysis: Sustainable Development Edition Basic description (what are we doing and why?): For this assignment, I’m asking you to do the following: (1) read about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal centered on Sustainable Cities and Communities (UNSDG #11); (2) find local, quantitative (statistical) research related to this goal; and (3) review how the statistical data is presented in this research. This assignment emphasizes STA2122 learning goals and objectives 1 through 5. That is, I’m assessing how well you are doing the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Recognizing and describe the vocabulary and symbols used in social statistics Understanding how to measure variables and test relationships at different levels Understanding the basics of descriptive and inferential statistics Making efforts to become critical consumers of statistical information Familiarizing yourself with global systems and issues and associated dimensions (e.g., historical, political, economic, social, cultural, environmental, technological) Research and preparation: 1. Familiarize yourself with UNSDG Goal #11: Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/cities/ 2. Review the “Targets” associated with this goal – they are listed about halfway down the page. (I have included a screenshot at the end of this document to help guide you.) What I would like you to do next is to perform some research on ONE of these particular targets in FLORIDA (preferably in Tampa Bay). You will need to find two (2) articles/items for this report. Here are some guidelines to consider: a. The articles/items must be derived from primary resources: They can be from a newspaper of record (e.g., The Tampa Bay Times or The New York Times), a book, a magazine (e.g., Newsweek), a governmental website (https://www.fdot.gov/), an environmental research organization, or a peer-reviewed research journal (e.g., City and Community). b. The articles/items must be recent, meaning they were published after 2014. c. The articles/items do not have to literally refer to the “UN Sustainable Development Goal” or the target word-for-word, but they must contain reporting related to the target. For example, let’s say I was interested in the target related to UNSDG#5: “End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere.” I could then look up research on gender differences in workplace, schooling, or medical discrimination in Florida. d. The articles/items must contain statistical data as expressed through at least one of the following graphic devices discussed in Chapter 2: A frequency table, pie chart, bar chart, line graph, or histogram. 3. Read, reflect, and report about the quantitative data reporting. University of South Florida STA 2122 Graphic Analysis Paper Save a copy of the articles. Save a screenshot or copy the graphics for your report. Create proper citations for your report. Instructions below. Project Report Requirements: 1. Summary and Discussion: The goal of this section is to inform audience about UNSDG#11 and how steps are being taken in Florida to fulfill it. You should briefly summarize UNSDG #11, elaborate on the target you chose, and discuss the research you uncovered. (For example, what are the two articles about? How are they related to this target? What kinds of statistics do they present? Are the data legitimate?) a. This section should be about two large (2) paragraphs in length and contain citations to your sources. b. TIP: When composing this summary and reflection, pretend as if your audience has no prior knowledge about the UNSDG or the research you’re presenting. 2. Graphical Analysis: In the second section, I’d like you to provide an analysis of one (1) statistical graphic from your research. Please directly copy and paste the graphic into the body of your report or include it at the end of your paper. This section should contain four (4) short, subtitled, paragraphs and demonstrate your statistical literacy. The following sections should be included: I. Description: Describe and discuss the format of the graphic. What is the type of graphic you are you analyzing? What have we learned about this graphic in our lessons (like, what kind of data is it used for and why)? II. Explanation: Explain what the graphic is conveying in detail. What variables are being displayed in the graphic here? What level of measurement is that data? What statistics are being shown? How many variables are presented? What are their names? What is this graphic trying to emphasize or tell us? III. Critique: Provide a critique of the graphic. Is the graphic a good fit for this data? Why/why not? Discuss how well the graph is constructed, considering such features as appropriate labels, axes, statistics, footnotes, color (if applicable), and the type of graph chosen. IV. Recommendations: Make recommendations for change. Remember that a wellconstructed graphic should be able to stand on its own, without accompanying text. If something about the graphic unsatisfactory, suggest modifications that would improve its functionality. If there are none, suggest an alternative or find one in another report. 3. References a. Your paper should contain at least two (2) references and citations to reading and research and one (1) reference and citation related to the UNSDG. b. Your paper should contain statistical concepts and Key Terms found in our lessons (i.e., chapters 1 and 2). Since I’ve asked you to discuss concepts from the book and lecture, it is not required that you cite in-class resources. It is NEVER acceptable to cite me, Dr. Toothman, as a source unless you’re discussing my published work. c. You may use ASA, APA, MLA, or Chicago-style formatting, in-text citation, and references. Technical requirements: 1. Please proofread your work. 2. Your report should be saved and uploaded to Canvas as a document file (.doc or .docx). 3. Do not include your name or other identifying information. This report will be analyzed using plagiarism-checking software. APPENDIX A This photo displays a partial list of the UNSDG#11 Targets.
