With regards to “American” culture, it is clear that some of our values are more positive than others. Using your texts, as well as the extra handouts provided, please review the subject of values in America. 1) What five values do we share that seem to be the most positive to you? 2) Why do YOU think they are important? 3) Can you explain how they help society (aka Functionalism)? 4) Secondly, what do you think are perhaps our three worst values? 5) How do you think these values are/were shaped within our society and are perpetuated?? 6) If they are so bad, why do you think they exist in the first place? 7) Is there someone benefiting from perpetuation of a not so great value? 8) Lastly, how do you think some of our worst values are viewed by those from or within countries with less financial and governmental stability? 9) What are the global ramifications of our value for convenience, materialism, racism and the like?? 10) Is there any justifiable reason other countries might dislike their interpretation of the American way of life (as is represented in the media and by our consumerism)? For this post you should write at least three-four sentences for both part one and part two. Your response regarding international views of American values and the ramifications of such should be composed of a hefty paragraph full of meaningful thoughts and assessment. Ideas from the text and handouts should be incorporated into all written material.
