Enduring Understanding: All citizens have the right to be protected and live freely, equally and with dignity. Explain the reasons for the creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and key concepts associated to the declaration. Explain what means a citizen can use to exercise his rights under the Charter, e.g. challenging a provincial or federal law, role of the Ombudsman. Analyze situations in which rights and freedoms may conflict, e.g. freedom of expression, hate literature, traditions, defamation. Assess the contribution of people and organizations in the promotion of human rights both nationally and internationally, e.g. John Diefenbaker , Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Emily Murphy, Assembly of First Nations, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela. Measure the effects of collective action on the evolution of law in democracies, e.g. special interest groups, petitions. Assess the impact of the Indian Act and unfulfilled treaty obligations on the human rights of First Nations peoples in Canada.
