do a Generative Writing exercise to help you brainstorm topics for your ENG114 Essay. The course essay asks you to discuss the importance of language and literacy in your personal life, focusing on any aspect you wish. This exercise gets you thinking about the personal contexts of language and literacy that influence you and asks you to concretely describe and critically reflect on these contexts. 1. Provide a personal definition of literacy. Explain what relationship(s) exist between reading, writing, and language.  2. Think through personal contexts, cultural influences, and educational experiences of your own. This may include a memory of secondary education or a reflection of watching one of your children flourish into a productive reader and/or writer. Visualize this memory and describe the moment in as much detail as possible. What happened? Where did it happen? Who was involved? What specific things were said? (feel free to use direct quotes) 3. Reflect on why this memory is so significant to you. Why did you choose this memory? How did it impact you? How did it influence your relationship with language and literacy?
