Your first assignment is located in Chapter 1 of Intentional Interviewing and Counseling. Go to page 21, entitled An Important Audio or Video Exercise. As discussed in the textbook, find someone who is willing to role-play a client with a (fictional or real, but fictional is probably best) decision that needs to be made, a concern, an issue or an opportunity. Interview and practice counseling “the client” for at least 15 minutes using your own natural style. If possible, make a video or audio recording of this so you can reflect upon your natural helping style. Be sure to read pages 28-36 of Chapter 2 before starting and ask your “client” if you may record your “session.” When you have finished, please make a copy of the Client Feedback Form found on page 22 for your client to fill out and return to you. Then, after reviewing your interview, please answer these questions from the text: What did you do right in this session? What did the client notice as helpful? What stands out for you from the Client Feedback Form? What was the essence of the client’s story? How did you help the client bring out his or her narrative/issues/concerns? How did you demonstrate intentionality? When something you said did not go as anticipated, what did you do next? How did you experience the session? How authentic and genuine did you feel? Name just one thing on which you would like to improve in the next session you have. What actions will you take? Put your answers in a Word document and submit them into the assignment box (you do not have to retype the questions – only the answers). Ask both yourself and your volunteer “client” the questions. One purpose of this exercise so early in the semester is to practice this format for submitting assignments to me.
