Peer response Length: A minimum of 150 words per post, not including references Citations: At least one high-level scholarly reference in APA per post from within the last 5 years Peer post: The consensus model for the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is an extremely important method for ensuring APRNs are prepared to work in their new role. It has standardized the system of obtaining an APRN degree whether a nurse becomes a nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife, or clinical nurse specialist. Each role is prepared to provide the full spectrum of care within their scope of practice for one of the six population foci (APRN Consensus Model, 2008). The consensus model is also used to guarantee patient safety while expanding patient access to healthcare through the licensure, accreditation, certification, and education of the APRN (APRN Consensus Model, 2008, p. 5). With the consensus model the APRN is no longer limited to one state and can move across state lines more readily (Mack, 2018, p. 421;Walker, 2015, p. 51). In addition, the consensus model proved to be vital when the affordable care act was developed in 2010 because the consensus model established a standard for healthcare delivered by APRNs across the nation (Mack, 2018). With the affordable care act the APRN role became essential to healthcare as more people had the ability to pay for healthcare but providers were scarce. With the consensus model establishing standards for the APRN, more states allowed APRNs full practice authority to meet the demands for healthcare (Mack, 2018). Without the consensus model I believe it would be more difficult for APRNs to become primary providers as there were no set standards for them. With the consensus model patients, doctors, and states can be assured the APRN has met the criteria necessary to practice in a specialized field. They can also be confident that the APRN will give adequate care, ensure patient safety all while expanding patient access to healthcare. References APRN Consensus Model.
