Causes of Gender Discrimination Essay

Causes of Gender Discrimination Essay Causes of Gender Discrimination Essay Gender discrimination results from the unequal treatment of sexes. It is thus mainly based on the how persons are treated due to their sex but not entirely on their gender differences. There are some anti-discriminatory laws put in place to curb gender discrimination. Violation to these laws includes setting up different opportunities for promotion and working conditions for different sexes. Another violation of the laws can occur when better terms are offered by lenders to a particular gender. It is thus an illegal practice that is fought against by law. Causes of Gender Discrimination Essay The first cause of gender discrimination is poverty. This is common in the developing countries. Women are the major culprits since they are overwhelmingly poor. It is rather saddening that women in these countries are subjected to very inhuman treatment (Kimura, 118). Such treatments includes, domestic violence, forced child-marriages, denial to inherit property and human trafficking. Poverty is thus a great contributing factor to the immense suffering of different gender particularly women. Causes of Gender Discrimination Essay The second cause of gender discrimination is high population growth rate. Women in such conditions consider child bearing as their only means of security, survival, and status. In an attempt to reduce the cases of discrimination, many women find themselves at odd situations when they get unwanted pregnancies, and responsibility of raising a lot of children (England, 149). Teenage pregnancies contribute to high growth rate of the population. Such women who get children at young ages often experience social stigma. This restricts fair opportunities for women and thus leads to further suffering. The third cause of gender issues is the so called fallacy of men superiority (Kimura, 118). Male chauvinism has been very rampant in many societies. Men have the pride that they cannot be under the authority of women leaders in many areas. The men believe that women are rather weak in leadership or in conducting certain issues thus do not deserve anything better than being under men’s authority. Causes of Gender Discrimination Essay The effect of gender discrimination is the reduced economic growth and development. This is as a result of poor education opportunities offered to women. This is a big challenge to economic growth since most of the worlds uneducated gender is the girl child. The uneducated girls are the most vulnerable to early pregnancy thus hindering positive development of the economy. Among the 350 million children who have no access to education record two-thirds to be girls (UNFPA). The gap of gender inequality reduces where the girl child is well educated and has proper medical facilities access and family planning resources. Another effect of the gender issue is the feeling of loss and a negative mind set in women of their ability to deliver positive results. This has in turn led to the underrepresentation of women in sports, workplace and academics (Steel et al, 47). With the high representation of men in most of the major places, women have been looked down upon while their male counterparts are favored. Causes of Gender Discrimination Essay The third effect on the gender issue in the workplace results to employee turnover. A hostile working environment also results in the case of unfair treatment of personnel based on gender. There are high cases of harassment in the workplaces where gender discrimination is not curbed. In some case, violence is experienced in the workplace (England, 149). The best solution to fight these gender issues is to set up both federal and state laws in all the states to prohibit any discrimination based on the gender of an individual. Remedies for cases of gender discrimination should be established where offenders in financial institution, education institutions and work places should compensate those they discriminate against. Certain inclusion and promotion of diversity will also be very essential in remedying gender discrimination and enhance both sexes equality Causes of Gender Discrimination Essay Permalink: causes-of-gender…rimination-essay / Causes of Gender Discrimination in the Workplace A primary causes of gender discrimination in the workplace is that women are under-represented in many different industries, especially in male-dominated industries such as the auto industry. As a result, men in authority in these industries don’t always have an open, progressive view about welcoming women, and that can create conflict, tension, and a negative work environment. Discrimination, however, doesn’t exist solely in male-dominated industries; it also crops up in diverse industries in which male executives and male staff employees view women as less capable or less able to perform work tasks at an acceptable level. Everyday gender discrimination is invisible to most individuals. We are not aware of the several gender labels society has created. The world has developed gender labels to become a normal concept we use everyday. Gender is when an individual portrays themselves with masculine or feminine characteristics. We grow up learning and knowing about gender and their different roles in a community. Gender labels play a huge role in sports. For instance, we tend to believe and stereotype different sports for only dominating in either a male or female sport. This has become an issue that is causing discrimination between the two genders. Considering this, has gender labels limited the amount of women participating in sports because society has set lower standards and norms in sports for female athletes. Sports have always been considered a masculine characteristic. It has taken years for women to be able to participate in the same sports as men. Males are expected to demonstrate certain characteristic that categorizes them as “masculine”. For example, the stereotype of men being stronger than woman is a factor in how discriminate women in sports. Causes of Gender Discrimination Essay Causes and Effects of Gender Inequality Throughout history, countless acts of gender inequality can be identified; the causes of these discriminating accounts can be traced back to different causes. The general morality of the inequity relies on a belief that men are superior to women; because of this idea, women have spent generations suffering under their counterparts. Also, a common expectation is that men tend to be more assertive and absolute because of their biological hormones or instinctive intellect. Another huge origin is sexual discrimination; even in the world today, many women are viewed by men as just sex objects rather than a real human being with…show more content… Although they have been given more rights and equality, women still lack fairness in areas such as education, domestic abuse, crime, and lower class value. Cassandra Clifford states in her article “Are Girls still marginalized? Discrimination and Gender Inequality in Today’s Society”, “Woman and girls are abused by their husbands and fathers, young girls are exploited by sex tourism and trafficking, girls in many countries are forced into arranged marriages at early ages. Twice as many women are illiterate as men, due to the large gap in education, and girls are still less likely to get jobs and excel in the work place than boys.” She describes some of the issues that women face today around the world. These issues are what keep society from coming together to form a better world. Today, women have more rights than ever before, but the belief of male has resulted in a never ending convention toward women. This leads to predetermined thought from younger girls that they must become inferior. Clifford states in her article, “Children look first to their own parents for examples and inspiration, therefore when a child see their mother living a life of inequality, the cycle often continues as girls feel there is no alternative for themselves.” When younger girls see their mother or any woman submitting to the standard, they feel they must do the same. Causes of Gender Discrimination Essay Effects of Gender Discrimination Gender discrimination may seem like a minor problem in the workplace, but the truth is that it increases conflict and tension among your team members. When it’s clear that your work culture devalues the contribution of female employees, the focus shifts from performing daily tasks to the conflicts created by women that decide to take action against discriminatory practices. Another effect of gender discrimination is that your female employees will feel less motivated to do their job, because they don’t feel valued by their supervisors. This can hinder productivity, which means you’re losing money because you haven’t resolved the issues that are affecting your female staff members. Finally, gender discrimination is illegal under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, so you may end up facing legal repercussions, if a female employee files a claim with the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission. Causes of Gender Discrimination Essay Solutions for Gender Discrimination Although there is no one-size-fits-all remedy for gender discrimination, there are a few solutions that you can implement to help improve the situation. You should try to increase the diversity of your workforce by reducing or eliminating experience requirements for some of your positions. This helps fight gender discrimination, because women who wish to re-enter the workforce after taking time off to raise a family might not qualify for jobs that require prior experience. Another solution is to hold seminars and sessions for your male employees, so that they understand the signs and consequences of gender discrimination. This can help the men at your company become allies of female employees, thereby creating a more collaborative, positive work environment.
