Thinking in Pictures by Temple Grandin

In Temple Grandin’s Thinking in Pictures, she recalls how she “was quoted as saying, ‘If I could snap my fingers and be nonautistic, I would not. Autism is part of what I am.’ In contrast, Donna Williams says, ‘Autism is not me. Autism is just an information processing problem that controls who I am.’ Who is right? I think we both are, because we are on different parts of the autism spectrum, I would not want to lose my ability to think visually. I have found my place along the great continuum” (50).

This passage underscores to the issue of personal identity–personal defining and how others or society chooses to categorize people.

In your response, speak to this passage in general, and what it says about the human predicament.

Also, select another passage that you think is especially relevant for Grandin’s experience.

The first formal writing assignment is a descriptive essay. You can choose one of two options:

The first paragraph should start with the thesis statement (main idea). The second sentence should be a statement explaining your first reason. The third sentence should be your second reason. The fourth sentence should be your third reason. The fifth sentence should be a concluding sentence for the paragraph. I am going to give you an example with just the basic wording. You can make your sentences longer than my sample.

Sentence 1 My favorite vacation spot is Destin, Florida. Sentence 2 I love to walk on the white sand beaches and listen to the waves crashing on the shore. Sentence 3 My favorite activity is eating at one of the many available fresh seafood restaurants.                 The Fyre Festival was a musical event that was said to bring the uttermost experience in 2017. The argument that I’m going to present is that the organizers were fraudulent because they did not plan out correctly and that is why it failed. From my point of view, when I first saw the headlines of the festival, it was very skeptical, why, because it surges out of nothing all of a sudden and at the same time it collapsed. The organizers said it was not their fault if it was not their fault, then whose fault is it?

Learning outcome: The term paper protocol has been designed to provide you the opportunity to synthesize the information gained over the course of the semester, to apply theories of happiness to the consideration of a specific topic, and to evaluate empirical scholarship on the topic. The term paper project involves multiple stages which will afford you the opportunity to think broadly on your topic, focus your thinking, receive feedback from a peer, provide feedback, and engage in the critical process of revision. The process culminates in your creation of a revise and resubmit response letter (template to be provided) which reflects on the manuscript preparation process.

Connection to course objectives: This assignment has been designed to reflect and facilitate the course objectives which guide our class this semester, including:

• To explore and uncover answers to questions regarding happiness (e.g., What is happiness? How is happiness measured? Are some individuals happier than others? Are some cultures happier than others? Can happiness be induced?).

• To employ findings from sociology, psychology, anthropology, and the natural sciences to answer these questions.

Task: There are three options for the term paper.

Option A: Random Acts of Kindness. This topic requires that you read the article by Lewellyn Jones (to be posted on Moodle), perform random acts of kindness, and consider the experience of conducting the acts and the observed responses to your acts through the literature on happiness.

For the assignment, I choose the TV series, White Collar, premiering from 2009 to 2014 created by Jeff Eastin. Basics of the show revolve around, Neal Caffrey, a famous con artist, and a thief. He eventually is captured by the FBI after years and after serving most of his time, Neil is able to convince his case detective, Peter Burke, to have him release under the FBI work release program. Niel with his expert consultation, skills, and experiences starts to help the FBI solve the white-collar crimes in the city of New York.
Institutional anomie theory is used in explaining how societal institutions promote crime. Society encourages values towards financial success but does not always promote ethics to legitimately find success. People look the other way for gains even when they do not even require it. American society always is pushing to want more and get more. When one goal is achieved others get developed after. We move to achieve more the moment we realize we can get more, regardless of needing any more or not. Willing to step over others the immoral way just to achieve more.
In season 1, episode 9 of White Collar, Peter, and Neil are looking into this mortgage fraud case where a judge, Michelle Clark, receives percentage cuts from assisting in cases for the companies, people buying houses. Judge Clark used her money to bribe other federal officers working for her, keeping her safe, looking the other way. But when they made the mistake of going after Peter and his family. Judge Clark was set up by Peter and Neil creatively to be arrested by the officer she was bribing because Peter could not get the authorization to find the illegal money Clark was hiding from them the entire time. This goes to show how people already live a respectable career with much fair pay than most people’s, it is never enough for us. We need more and we keep thriving because the world we are creating is also creating endless possibilities and opportunities. Materialism takes over ethical views. Individualism is socialized to believe they can do it on their own. No matter the ethics of its attainment.
