Write a 3-5 page paper (due July 24th) on the following topic: In this paper, you are required to watch the film On The Waterfront (1954). You can see the film in a variety of ways. It might cost $3 or so, but it’s worth it! On the Waterfront embodies many of the ideas that were introduced a century earlier with the rise of the Realist Period. The Realist Movement (1840-1870) celebrated the common man and his or her daily, mostly unrecognized, struggles to survive. Heroes changed too. Even the most menial and unheralded occupations, like being a dockworker, could be invested with “heroic” dimensions. Probably the most famous American example is Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, but On the Waterfront also borrows from the Realist tradition. In Classical Drama, stretching back to the Greek and Roman ideas of tragedy, the “outcome” of the hero’s life is determined by the choice or choices the “hero” makes. And, about 90% of the time, the hero’s final choice is based on loyalty. The “side” the hero ultimately takes, leads to either triumph or tragedy. In tragedy, the hero seems to “chase,” and finally choose, betrayal; in triumph, the hero chooses loyalty, but he or she does so ONLY AFTER recognition of betrayal. The hero sees the truth. What “truth” does Terry Malloy finally see? Is his story a triumph or a tragedy?

For your final paper, you can pick any topic of your choice that will be covered this semester. Write a term paper which provides a small overview of how sociology (mainly) has explored or approached the phenomenon. Make sure to explain the basic issue/phenomena, concepts, the different dimensions of the issue that are interesting to sociology and any other information that you think is necessary to explain what we know and what we still need to know about the issue/phenomena.

Directions: Watch a movie of your choice that focuses on the family or other intimate relationships. Examine no more than three characters and show how various agents of socialization (family, friends, media, religion, work etc…) affect how each of these characters view themselves, how they interact with other family members, and individuals within the wider society. You MUST use the theoretical perspective of symbolic interaction and information from the self and socialization section of your book to help you organize a response. In this project, you will play the part of a sociologist who has been requested by your national community to craft a proposal to the potential funder, the Department of Health and Human Services. You will write the proposal by conducting research on the social problem and thinking about how to limit your personal biases when later analyzing the social issue, you will analyze the problem from a sociological perspective, outlining the influential variables and the local and global impacts of the problem, and finally suggest a potential solution. The essay reads: First, in her article, “A Way Outa No Way: Eating Problems Among African-American, Latina, and White Women,” Thompson challenges the assumption that women develop eating problems because of their obsession with the thinness ideal.  She suggests other factors are involved.
