Chiropractic Folk Devils

Given the complexity of these relationships, how can we best improve the nation’s health? What factors are most important to address? What solutions would make the biggest difference in the widest range of people? Toolkit Ch. 13. Chiropractic Folk DevilsChiropractors are health care professionals who are musculoskeletal experts who assess and treat disorders of the muscular, skeletal, and nervous systems (Canadian Chiropractic Association, 2017). On September 12, 1996, an Ontario woman named Lana Dale Lewis died of a stroke at the age of 45. Her family and various moral entrepreneurs were convinced that the cause originated in a chiropractic manipulation she had received for migraines. The ensuing moral panic surrounding the use of chiropractic services lasted from 1996 to 2005 and was fuelled by media coverage, which occurred daily throughout the 22-month investigation into her death (Villanueva-Russell, 2009). The inquest into Lewis’s death by a coroner’s jury eventually rendered a verdict of “death by means of an accident” (Laeeque & Boon, 2004). Nonetheless, the media were successful in creating a moral panic, and anti-chiropractic messages began appearing in magazines and on websites (e.g., Chirowatch.com). The end result was a widespread but largely unfounded fear relative to statistical realities that damaged the reputation of the chiropractic profession (Villanueva-Russell, 2009). Moral panic over chiropractors led to reforms in Canadian health insurance systems. After 30 years of coverage, in 2004, Ontario “delisted” chiropractic services from its health insurance plan; the other provinces followed suit. This meant that people who utilized chiropractic services now had to pay for the treatment themselves (Deloitte, 2004). Chiropractic services are still delisted in most provinces; however, health plans provided by employers and private health care providers typically cover at least some of the costs associated with chiropractic use in Canada today (Healthquotes.ca, 2015). think outside the Box: Can you think of an example of a fad or event that was highly sensationalized in the media at some point in history as a threat to moral

Leadership Theory and Practice

1- key authors in the debate on management versus leadership? refer to intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and/or refer to some motivations theories, such as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs or Vroom’s expectancy theory. 2- This module has explored some of the early thinking about what leadership is and how it is achieved. It has summarised trait theories and behavioural theories and concluded that a more contextualised explanation of leadership is required if we are to understand it properly – and, of course, if we are to become the best leaders we can. As the module has demonstrated, leadership is contingent on the situation. Fiedler (1967) developed a contingency theory, which, applied to leadership, proposes that the style of leadership appropriate in different contexts varies. Therefore, the choice of a leader should be contingent on their match with followers and with the desired outcomes/goals of the organisation. Not every leader will be suitable for every leadership role. Following on from this, the module explored various approaches to the understanding and practice of leadership that are contingent on the situation, and require a flexible or considered approach with regards to who is being led, what the purpose of the group/task is, and which style (or which leader) is most appropriate. The principles of contingent and contextually meaningful leadership underpin most modern approaches to leadership, which, most recently, have evolved to refer to leadership as a developmental process involving: leading in terms of thought: having a vision in terms of the goals of the team or organisation; leading in terms of the task: what leadership is appropriate for different tasks; and leading in terms of people: in particular, developing people so that they are enabled to give their best. 3- This module has outlined the key theories of transactional leadership; and transformational leadership. These theories are developments of the theories of traits, behaviours, contingent and situational leadership, and propose that leadership is about influencing people by transaction and by offering opportunities to engage on a personally meaningful level. The practice of leadership as involving some degree of each of these is known as the full range of leadership. From there, three of the most commonly cited approaches to leadership hat rely heavily on the principles of transformational leadership, in particular, were also explored, including charismatic, servant and authentic leadership. Most recent developments in understanding leadership are beginning to focus less on individual leaders and what they do to focus more on leadership as a practice and as a process. These are explored in the next module. 4- This module has offered some alternative ways of thinking about leadership that broaden our view from simply focusing on the actions and behaviours of individual leaders. Among the ideas suggested are that leadership: is a collective activity that involves multiple people working collaboratively across organisational and professional boundaries. does not necessarily reside at the top of an organisation, nor is it always restricted to formal roles within an organisational hierarchy. can be understood as a social and relational process. can be understood as a set of practices and as the ongoing practice that brings about change and produces direction. On a practical level, focusing on collective and relational approaches to leadership changes the emphasis for those who are involved in the process of leadership in organisations. Instead of feeling pressure at an individual level to ‘live up to’ an ever-expanding list of behavioural competencies required of ‘good leaders’, the onus shifts to leadership as a collective phenomenon that entails building collaborative groups of people who can have effective conversations. The need to be personally ‘charismatic’ or ‘authentic’ is replaced with the social dynamic of forming and maintaining relationships and developing a better dialogue to ease the process of doing leadership. In the next module, the need for different approaches in response to specific circumstances and challenges is explored. 5- gender, ethics and culture in leadership

Human Problems

Your potential internship is full of questions! Consider these two areas. First, consider the workings of your potential agency you wrote about earlier in the semester. What needs doing? What problems are unaddressed? Is there a population that is underserved by your agency? How are services provided? Second, consider the broader field. What does the current literature say about the human problem(s) addressed by your agency? What are the newest interventions or debates? A word of caution: It is easy to generate broad, sweeping questions. Most folks start off with big questions (How can we reduce the number of sexual assault victims in Alamance County?). It is fine to start big. However, your question will be more meaningful and manageable if you ultimately narrow your question to a smaller more focused question. For example, “how can this agency improve outreach to the adult Spanish speaking population of Burlington?” is a better question since it specifically identifies an intervention (outreach) a population (Spanish speaking) within a geographic area (Burlington). Thirdly, Relevance and justification: Explain why your question is important. Discuss the relevance of your question to clients and to the community. In this section, be sure to note who is affected by your question. Fourthly, Analysis: This section contains an analysis of the gathered information. You will need to include a minimum of four scholarly peer-reviewed sources that address your question. You should also include information (properly cited, of course) from other sources such as key informant interviews. Synthesize the information you have gathered into a statement that reflects accurately the current knowledge on this topic, however disparate that may be. Fifthly, Action plan: Describe in this section how you and other professionals would proceed in your work based on this information. Support your position. Finally, What else we need to know: Conclude with an analysis of what else you need to know in order to answer your question with greater confidence

Homelessness as a Social Problem

TOPIC For this assignment, we will address a large scale social problem in the U.S. – homelessness.  Our textbook does not deal directly with this subject, although there is a discussion of housing matters in the U.S. in Chapter 6 on Problems of Place.  You may also find Chapter 7 on Poverty useful in thinking about the problem of homelessness. RESEARCH There are two kinds of research required for this paper.  The first is traditional library research of scholarly sources and analysis of homelessness.  The second is local community research.  Most of us in the class live in areas where homelessness exists to one degree or another.  Begin working on this paper by finding out what you can about the extent of homelessness in your area and the problems and possible solutions associated with it.  A topic search on “homeless” in the local newspaper(s) is a good way to begin.  Find an organization in your area that works to reduce homelessness, and/or to provide assistance to homeless people.  These may be nonprofit organizations, city or county programs, church-related programs, or other kinds of outreach or public service groups.  Choose one program to use as an example in your paper.  To gather information about the organization, there are several possibilities: a personal visit to an organization, the organization’s website if they have one, or local news coverage, for example. ANALYSIS Chapter 1 on the Sociological Approach to Social Problems introduces you to two concepts you will need for this paper.  The first is a Sociological Imagination.  The second is the idea of a “Person-Blame Approach” to understanding Social Problems as contrasted with a “Systems-Blame Approach.”   In your community, where do you find evidence of a person-blame approach and evidence of a systems-blame approach?  These are always at odds in one way or another, and the conflict between them is one reason social problems persist.  What are one or two things you think would make the most difference in your community in reducing homelessness?  What are the most important one or two things we might do nationally to reduce homelessness?  Remember to keep your analysis framed sociologically within what we are studying this month. Length and Format The finished paper should be 5 – 7 double spaced pages. Your paper must use (APA) or (MLA) in-text citations and include a title page and a reference page.  There is an APA Guide posted in Course Resources.  Links to both MLA and APA guides can also be found by visiting the National University Library Website.

Gender and Inequality

This three- to four-page (800-1000 word) assignment grants you the opportunity to work more with synthesis and expanding ideas. In this paper, we will build up toward more of the structure and organization that should be present in your final paper. You should include TWO MAJOR ASPECTS covered in lecture/videos and at least TWO peer-reviewed academic ARTICLES that you have found on your own. You can choose to deal with race and ethnicity as its own topic, immigration as its own topic, or discuss them together. You can use this discussion as an opportunity to explore intersectionality to practice the approach. You can bring in some information on gender and inequality, if you would like to, as well. As with the previous paper, you should have an INTRODUCTION, LITERATURE REVIEW, and CONCLUSION. You should also include a reference page. You can also include an additional section in this paper, though it is optional. In a section titled OBSERVATIONS, you can discuss the dynamics you see happening in society recently and currently. Please use support where you can (including news articles).

The Inevitable Rise in Dual-Income

1. Get two new articles for your literature review. a.Leonce, T., Schweyer, A., & Whillans, A. (2020). The Inevitable Rise in Dual-Income Households and the Intertemporal Effects on Labor Markets. Compensation & Benefits Review, 52(2), 64-76. b. Hamamura, T. (2012). Are Cultures Becoming Individualistic? A Cross-Temporal Comparison of Individualism–Collectivism in the United States and Japan. Personality and Social Psychology Review, 16(1), 3-24. 2. Summarize the research questions and conclusions of the two articles. 3. Describe the data used to draw those conclusions. 4. Critically analyze the logic behind the argument that validates the conclusions. (This is the important part of the assignment.) N.B.: if the logic of one of the articles does not hold up to a close examination, then get rid of it and find another. To “critically analyze” does not mean either to summarize or to attack. It’s more like parsing the argument, identifying the underlying assumptions, and mapping out the steps from the propositions to the conclusions. 5. Critically analyze the choice and use of research methodologies.
