This is an open book, open note, take home final essay exam.  You may use any and all sanctioned course material (text, reader (White Fragility), articles and video on Moodle) in answering each question (aka, No Google or Wikipedia!)   Answer each item as thoroughly and thoughtfully as possible, making certain to cite all direct quotations and statistics with quotation marks, the author and page number.   Each can be answered in two lengthy paragraphs , keeping in mind that each question constitutes 25% of the final exam grade.    This final should be typed, double-spaced, and uploaded to Moodle. Please use the text book that can be found online. Also use sources that supports your answers which can be found on my course portal. I will include my login credentials to the course so you can use the sources that are given there. Articles/videos/etc. Include the White Fraglility book as well. Please please do a good job. It is my final. Also, please do the extra credit. Textbook: Eitzen, D. Stanley and Maxine Baca Zinn and Kelly Eitzen Smith.  2018.  Social Problems (14th Edition).  Pearson.  eText ISBN: 9780134637808, 0134637801 Login info:  https://moodle.adelphi.edu/course/view.php?id=123375 Alisapersaud Persaud7497 1.  Chapter 8 discusses the concepts of Race and Ethnicity in the US.   What is the sociological definition of race?  What does it mean when sociologists describe race as a “social construct”?  Now define ethnicity.  Explain racial inequality from the three different theoretical perspectives: deficiency theories, bias theories and structural discrimination theories.  Which theoretical grouping is the most valid, according to your text?  Why?  2.  Describe what the authors refer to as “growing racial conflict” in the US.  How do they explain this phenomenon?  Cite an example from class (articles, video clips and/or films) which illustrates the problem.  3.  Another social problem that has been used as a political football in this country concerns healthcare delivery and insurance.  What makes the US Healthcare system so unique among nations?  Do we really have “the best healthcare in the world”, as some in the mainstream media assert?  What is the factual evidence for this? Begin by describing the unique health care crises facing the country.  In other words, what, according to experts who study the problem, are the key problems with the approach embraced by the US pre-2010 (and to a large extent, through today)?   What was/is the Affordable Care Act?   Why was/is it so controversial?  What lessons might be learned from studying other countries’ approaches to healthcare delivery and insurance?   4.  Now that you’ve read Ch 11, and read articles/watched videos on the subject, what do you believe are some of the most significant problems facing the criminal justice system today?  Elaborate on at least two problems here.   Explain crime from the two differing perspectives:  Person Blame vs. Societal/Structural Approach.  Which one do the authors lean toward when explaining crime rates?    Extra credit:  Choose one of the following essays to earn up to 5 extra credit points. A.  Describe the historical origins and trajectory of the US’s War on Drugs.  What, according to the text’s authors, have been some of the consequences of official drug policies in the US and elsewhere (in other words, what are the major critiques of US drug policy)?  Why do some sociologists/criminologists claim that the drug war is racist?  Describe at least one “solution” to this problem. B.  Describe the cultural and structural forces that contribute to the Environmental Crisis.   Begin by briefly describing what we know about climate change and its ramifications for the earth, and us, from peer reviewed climate scientists.   How and why did this matter of scientific inquiry become so polarizing?   Next, elaborate on the cultural and structural variables that make potential solutions even more difficult.  What are some solutions posited by your authors (somewhere in your answer I’d like you to describe the difference between individual-level, societal-level, global-level solutions to the crisis).  Which offer the most promise?

Meaning of Life

Please view the following video – “This is Water,” by David Foster Wallace – and then answer the following questions in your Discussion for this unit/module. Wallace gave this speech to the Kenyon College (Ohio) graduating class of 2005. And as I think you’ll quickly find out, he approaches a commencement speech very different than other speakers. 🙂  The questions are: Choosing Compassion – Do you resonate with what Wallace is talking about in this speech? Which parts stick out to you the most, and why? Can we choose to see people and situations differently? Is it possible to choose compassion for others? And how does this impact the quality of your life? Could he be onto something on a profound and deep level, something about the meaning of life itself?  Meaning of Life – Are you pessimistic or optimistic about life? And why? After describing both approaches, say which one resonates with you.  Philosophy and Life – Has this class helped you? In what ways? How could it be made better for future students? How might you apply these ideas to your life?

Essay Winter

Exercise Overview This exercise has two components: Part I: Discussion of Opportunity Atlas Findings, and Part II: Application of Course Readings. By the end of the exercise students will be able to: 1.    Describe what social mobility looks like in the United States among the sampled population.     2.    Compare and contrast different types of social mobility outcomes in the United States.     3.    Describe how children and/or college students struggle with social inequalities in the United States.     4.    Apply contemporary sociological explanations of social inequalities to social mobility outcomes in the United States. Your completed assignment should be 3 – 5 pages, double spaced. Submit your assignment no later than Sunday January 10th. Please include a reference page. I prefer ASA citation, but will accept APA. To access the Opportunity Atlas, use the following link: The Opportunity Atlas https://www.opportunityatlas.org Part I: Discussion of Opportunity Atlas Findings The Opportunity Atlas reveals which neighborhoods offer children better life chances. The Atlas was comprised by tracking 20 million Americans from childhood to their mid-30s. The outcomes project how well children from different US neighborhoods will fare as adults. For example, do children who grew up in Buffalo, New York have a higher probability of becoming incarcerated compared to children who grew up in Dallas, Texas? After you access the map, click “Begin Exploring.” The “Get Started in Three Easy Steps” tutorial prompts you to 1) search for a city or address; 2) select the outcome you would like to map; and 3) choose a demographic group to focus on. Use any zip code or city name to build your narrative. I suggest that you compare/contrast different cities. For example, how do the opportunities for children who grew up in Malibu, CA differ from the opportunities for children who grew up in Stockton, CA? Select at least five outcomes to compare/contrast. You can find the outcomes in the left-hand navigation menu such as, household income, incarceration rate, college graduation rate, hours worked per week, individual income, and number of children. Compare/contrast across multiple income groups, race group, and gender. To build your narrative think about what you’re interested in knowing. Life chances extend beyond income. For example, compare/contrast incarceration rates, employment rates, teenage birth rates, and high school graduation rates. Develop a narrative that discusses at least five different outcomes. You can build your analysis in any way that makes sense to you. For example, discuss three outcomes for a lower-income area (applying different income, race, and gender markers), and two outcomes for a higher-income area (applying different income, race, and gender markers). An Example What is the difference in household income life chances between White women and Latinx women who grew up in the area surrounding Sacramento State university? For White women the average is $65k, compared to $56K for Latinx women. This means that on average, White women who grew up in the area surrounding Sac State will make $65K annually, compared to Latinx women who grew up in the same area. This leads us to consider the social factors that generate a $10K income gap between White and Latinx women. I arrived at these numbers by inputting the Sac State area zip code – 95819. Then, I selected “Household income” as my outcome on the left-hand navigation menu. Then, I moved the Household Income Demographic marker to “All” on the right-hand side of the screen. Then I moved the Child Race marker to “White.” Then, I moved the “Child Gender” marker to Female. When finished, you will see that that White women who grew up in the Sac State area average $65K annually. Move the Child Race marker to “Hispanic” when you are ready to compare/contrast based on race. Try this. Did you arrive at the same numbers? What do you find when you the Child Race market to “All,” keeping Parent Income as “All,” and keeping Child Gender as “Female?” Did you arrive at $60K. This means, all women regardless of race, who grew up in the Sac State area will make $60K annually. Notice that this number is lower than the average for White women, and higher than the average for Latinx women. Did you arrive at the numbers successfully? If so, great! You’re ready to do your own analysis. If not, try again, and ask questions if you need assistance. Part II: Application of Readings Apply any of the readings from Blocks One – Two to your findings. How do the readings help you make sense of the disparities you identified in your analysis? For example, in Block Two we discussed race formation theory? How do race hierarchies relate to one’s life chances? In Block Three, we discussed mass incarceration. Did you identify any disparities, especially based on race among incarceration rates?  How can you use the readings to help explain the disparity? Select the terms, concepts and ideas from our readings that best help you explain your findings. In addition to our readings, include two outside sources. Helpful Hints The Opportunity Atlas has several features to help you. I suggest that you review their Guide, Methods, and/or FAQ. Each can be found in the lower left-hand corner on the screen. Include works cited and turnitin report pls Other readings: READINGS Brooks, Jacqueline, Heidy Sarabia, and Aya Kimura Ida. 2020. Choosing Knowledgeably v. Choosing By Default

Lamanna and Reidmann, the authors of the text, identify two forms of decision making, “choosing by default” and “choosing knowledgeably.” Unconscious decisions are defined as “choices made by default…ones that people make when they are not aware of all the alternatives or when they pursue the proverbial path of least resistance.” Choosing knowledgeably, on the other hand, involves a cycle of decision making, which requires self-awareness, an awareness of consequences, social pressures, and a willingness to accept consequences of a decision. For example, perhaps you were raised in a family system in which conflict is dealt with by shouting and talking over one another. Choosing knowledgeably would recognize shouting and talking over one another may escalate the conflict and subsequently, make a choice to communicate in a calm, constructive manner. Choosing by default would be to engage in the same pattern of yelling with little to no reflection, resulting in a shouting match. This exercise will require you to both reflect upon your own experiences to help further identify experiences that illuminate what it means to choose knowledgeably or by default. In this three-part post, you will incorporate materials from Chapters 1, 2, and 3. Instructions: Click on this post and create a new thread by clicking on the “Reply” button located directly underneath these directions by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Jan 7, 2021. You can also access this Discussion Board by clicking on “Discussions.”  1. In the new thread, write of a personal experience in which you made a choice in a relationship that would be characterized as “choosing by default” and of an experience in which you “chose knowledgeably.” Examples of these decisions may be in choosing a partner, communication in a relationship (romantic or familial), etc. Identify the variables (factors) that helped you to determine which experiences have been shaped by decisions of default or knowledge. How does choosing knowledgeably prompt different decisions than choosing by default? Provide examples. Make sure to be academic, sociological, and think critically in your response.  2. In learning about your own experiences with relationships and families, write a reflection on which focuses on one of the following themes within your family: divorce, parenting, marriage, gender, work/family, family conflict/resilience. First, describe the issue you intend to focus upon. Next, choose one of the sociological theories from Chapter Two to analyze and describe your chosen theme. This part of the discussion will help to prepare you for your family biography.  3. Write a reflection on how gender functioned in your family as you were growing up. For example, how were you socialized into a gender role? How did gender roles, such as masculinity and femininity affect your parents and [if applicable] their relationship? Cite the textbook and use examples from the assigned TED talk to academically and sociologically frame your experiences.

Analysis on Food Security

The members of the United Nations found great value in the analysis you provided on the effects of global warming that result from population growth. They are now asking you write an additional analysis to include further issues related to population growth. Here is the issue they have asked you to consider: The member states of the United Nations seek to build food systems that can provide global food security which will feed everyone, everywhere, every day by improving food quality though the promotion of effective and nutritional agricultural practices. The crucial issue is not the lack of food in the world but the access to that food. In many developing countries, food shortages are due to governmental control over food distribution. These governments maintain control of the population and their power by limiting access to nutritious food to certain groups. In this practice, they thereby “weaponize” food. Your second project as a consultant for the United Nations is to develop an analysis that addresses three issues related to global food insecurity caused by global population growth and poverty, and to explore these issues in a developing country of your choosing. Instructions The U.N. has given you the following guidelines: Content The U.N. has asked that your paper contain three sections. Each section should be one page (or approximately 300 words) in length and answer specific questions, identified in the outline below. It also asks that you use examples from your developing country when answering the questions. Introduction Provide an introduction of half a page minimum that addresses points 1–5 below: Explain the problem the U.N. has asked you to address in your own words. Identify the three sections your paper will cover. Identify the developing country you will consider. Tell the U.N. the causes of food insecurity. Provide a one-sentence statement of your solutions at the end of your introduction paragraph. Section I. Background What is food insecurity? What role does population growth play in food security? Section II. Technologies That Can Reduce Hunger and Improve Food Security What forms of technology can be used to reduce hunger and improve food security? How would these technological solutions work? What causes of food insecurity do these technologies address? Section III. Specific Factors in Chosen Developing Country Considering the causes of food insecurity, what factors interrupt the flow of food from the source to the people in the developing country you selected? Conclusion Provide a conclusion of half a page minimum that includes a summary of your findings that the United Nations can use to inform future policy decisions. Success Tips In answering each question, use examples from your developing country to illustrate your points. The U.N. needs facts and objective analysis on which to base future policy decisions. Avoid personal opinion and make sure your answers are based on information you find through research. Formatting Requirements Make sure your paper consists of 4–6 pages of content (or 1,200 words minimum, not including the cover or reference pages). Create headings for each section of your paper as follows: Section I. Background. Section II. Technologies That Can Reduce Hunger and Improve Food Security. Section III. Specific Factors in Chosen Developing Country. Use and cite at least five credible sources in your research. A list of potential resources is available below. This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards. For assistance and information, please refer to the Strayer Writing Standards link in the left-hand menu of your course. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. Potential Resources Capsule Review: Food Security and Scarcity: Why Ending Hunger Is So Hard, by C. Peter Timmer.
