Sociologists Research
Completing it cannot hurt your grade. It will replace your lowest Activity or Reflection Memo grade with 50 points. It will be graded pass/fail. If you meet the standards of the assignment, you will receive 50 points in place of your lowest Activity or Reflection Memo. If you submit something that does not meet those standards, you will not receive the extra credit. The prompt for the assignment is below. Your response should be between 550 and 750 words. Because this is extra credit, it is a non-negotiable grade. If you plagiarize, fail to meet the word count, and/or fail to thoughtfully address all portions of the prompt you choose below, you will not receive the points associated with this assignment. You will not be graded on the stance you take, but on how well you engage your sociological imagination to explain your thoughts over the course of this term. In your submission, make sure to specify which prompt you have chosen. Sociologists research a wide variety of issues that many people have strong beliefs about. Often, our research produces results that arent consistent with peoples beliefs about society or understanding of the way the world works. For this extra credit assignment, Id like for you to choose one of the following prompts. Prompt 1: Think of a way that S101 this semester has changed your beliefs about the world of sports. This could be information about the way that sports function in society/socialize us, structures of inequality, or ways that macro-level sports structures operate or affect peoples lives. Describe the issue youve chosen. Explain what your belief was prior to taking this course. Explain what your belief is now. What specific information from the course led you to change your beliefs/understanding of this issue? What about that information changed your perspective? or Prompt 2: Think of an issue we covered in S101 this semester that, after readings, lecture, and discussion, you still disagree with sociologists conclusions about. This could be information about the way that sports function in society/socialize us, structures of inequality, or ways that macro-level sports structures operate or affect peoples lives. Describe the issue youve chosen. Explain what your belief was prior to taking this course. Explain the sociological perspective on this issue (note: providing a straw man argument here is not satisfactory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man). Its fine for you to disagree with the conclusions drawn by sociologists, but providing an intentionally weak version of an argument you disagree with is not acceptable.) What evidence leads you to reject the sociological perspective on this issue? (note: again, its fine if you dont buy the sociological argument, but if thats the case, then you need to support your argument with contrasting evidence from a valid source, rather than just disagreeing for abstract reasons) What sort of evidence would be necessary for you to change your perspective? If no degree of evidence would convince you that your perspective is incorrect, then why is that?
Social Problem Application
Social class is determined by a groups relationship to the means of production. In this assignment, you will map the means of production and apply the concepts found within capitalism: consumption and production, Bourgeoisie and Proletariat, and commodity/goods. On page 20 of the report, List of Goods, ListofGoods.pdf Actions which lists goods made by child, forced and child forced labor, there are 10 commodities that are identified as produced by child, forced and child forced labor. Here is Page 20 only in a more accessible format: Page 20 BUREAU OF INTERNATIONAL LABOR AFFAIRS.pdf Actions Coffee is one of the commodities in the report. Apply Marx theory of Social Class by mapping the social relations of capitalism in the means of coffee production. Specifically, answer: Who are the Bourgeoisie and Proletariat of the industry? Specifically, who owns and works (provide the names of owners and net worth of companies) and include the wages of the Proletariat within the industry. To answer this, you will need to look up the most successful corporation and explore their website to find the Board of Directors. Do Board members identify with other corporations on the Coffee distribution corporation website? If so, which ones? Additionally, you will need to find what is the average wage of a worker in that industry/company? Do the workers (Proletariat) consume the goods or are the goods allocated to different markets outside of the work zone? To answer this, you will need to learn about the market specifically, where is the good (also called commodity) grown? (Please refer to the document I have provided on coffee production Table 1.Coffee Production Top Nation.pdf Actions ). You will need to compare this information to where coffee is consumed. Please use online sources and include these sources in your paper in a reference section. You may use any formatting style of your choice (MLA, APS, ASA, etc.) Your analysis should include at least 5 paragraphs: one, an introduction that discusses Marx theory and your analysis; a second paragraph that answers #1a-b. from the writing prompt above; a third paragraph that answers #1c from above; a forth that answers #2 from above; and a final paragraph that concludes your findings and ties the evidence back to Marx theory. You may use more than 5 paragraphs but limit your essay to 2 pages, 12-point font. Submissions shall be documents in pdf, doc/docx. No cloud submissions please, as these often have technical glitches where I cannot open the file. On the next page, I have provided an outline and resources for your assignment. Below is an outline to conduct your research. Which region and then countries produces the most coffee? Heredity and the Environment
This week we learned about how heredity (our genetics) and the environment (our family and how we were raised) can contribute to our personality and who we are today. Think about your own genetic inheritance – what traits do you share with your parents? Genetics can include such things as eye and hair color, but many personality traits are also thought to have a genetic basis. Genes can influence such things as whether we tend to be more anxious or relaxed and easygoing. What part do you think your genetics play in who you are today? Next, think about the environment in which you were brought up. What was your family environment like? How did your parents interact with you? What about siblings and other family members? What do you think you learned from peers and teachers? What part do you think your environment played in forming your personality? Please write 1-2 paragraphs describing how genetics and environment contributed to who you are today.

Strategies for Reducing Recidivism and victimization
The more times an individual has been victimized, the more likely that person is to be subject to future victimization. Also, the more times an offender engages in criminal behavior, the more likely they are to continue that conduct. This cycle of violence, for both the offenders and victims, can be addressed and broken when both individual-level variables and non-changeable variables are addressed. As a helping professional, being aware of interventions and strategies for addressing these variables, and being aware of the odds of their success, is crucial to helping that individual stop the cycle of violence. By Day 3 Post a brief description of a victim or offender population relevant to your current or future profession. Then, identify and describe one strategy for reducing an individual’s recidivism and one strategy for reducing revictimization risk that you might use with the given population. For this one, I choose the victim. For this paper please talk about sex abuse amongst children. I currently work with some of these victims in foster care. Strategies are awareness and signs to help children in the future avoid being sexually abused. Please proofread and were all questions.

Sport
In this assignment, you’ll engage with social constructionism and your own perspective to think about what it means to call something a sport. In 350 words: First, how did you define sports at the start of this term? What characteristics did a thing need to have for you to consider it a sport? What counted under that definition? What didn’t? Was that definition important to you? If someone told you that something you didn’t consider a sport was a sport, would you have argued with them? Why or why not? What is your definition of sports now? Has it changed? Why or why not?
