Crime Prevention Strategies
Contrary to popular belief, crime and victimization can happen anywhere. The increased transparency of crime statistics and access to multimedia sources of information has created a heightened popular awareness of the need for crime prevention in communities. As a consequence, the reach and definition of crime prevention movements have become broader in scope and more focused on specific internal communities. For example, internal communities such as military bases, primary and secondary schools, universities, and workplaces have instituted crime prevention measures, similar to what you might find in any traditionally zip code-defined neighborhood. Each of these internal communities is likely to have unique demographics, its own safety procedures and issues, statistics on rates of crime and victimization, and prevention issues and needs specific to its settings. By Day 4 Post a description of a crime prevention program within your community. If possible, post a website link. State the problem this prevention program addresses and the population(s) this program impacts. Explain, as a helping professional, whether you believe it addresses the problem and what changes would you make to this program. Instant Family
2. Pick a theory that interests you. Make sure you understand the key concepts, some of the propositions that come out of the theory, and how people who use the theory to study real families do so. The article reviews and the empirical applications sections of the theory text will help with this. They may also serve as guides. For example, in the symbolic interaction theory chapter, the authors use dating aggression as an empirical application of the theory. Movies about domestic violence would be a place to start because the chapter gives you some sense of how the theory is related to that particular issue in family living. 3. Watch the movie and take notes. Are there key scenes that really show aspects of the theory? If youre using systems theory, are there scenes that show closed or open boundaries? In Meet The Parents, how does the difficulty that Ben Stillers character has in being a part of that family show the closed boundary concept? How do the interactions of the three sisters in Hanging Up reflect the conflict theory proposition that coalitions form when families have more democratic authority patterns? 4. Begin to write your paper. a) Describe the family in the movie. Who are the members of the family and how are they related to each other? What type of family is it (nuclear, extended, cohabitating, single parent, homosexual, blended, dual worker, etc.)? Why do you characterize this group as a family? Is the plot of the movie realistic? How likely is it that a real family would be faced with this problem? If your only impression of families was based on this movie, what would that impression be? In other words, what would you think families are like if the only thing you knew about them was based on this movie. This could probably be the first few pages. Do not just answer these questions as a short answer essay. Bring the answers together into a coherent thought. b) Give me a broad sense of why youve chosen the theory and what it has to offer in explaining the family interaction. Then tell me about the theory. Please use the class texts to help you with this. Pretend I dont know anything about the theory. Make it clear to me that you do. This will give me some way to organize my thinking as I read the paper. This will tell me how I should think about what youre going to do. This will probably be two pages or so. c) Pick some scenes (2-3) that most clearly reflect the themes, concepts, and propositions of the theory you have chosen. Discuss how the interactions or other aspects of the family relationships do this. Use the notes that you took and support your analysis with specific examples from your notes. For example, if you say that both mother and father have equal power in decision-making, give clear and descriptive examples from the movie that show this. I imagine a page or two using each scene, but you dont have to stick to this format. I just think it would be easier to write a coherent paper if you try to analyze key incidents rather than rambling all over the place trying to analyze the whole story. d) Finally, surround the paper with an introduction and a conclusion that brings the reader into the paper and then closes the paper. Dont just stop writing and hand it in. A paper, like a book and like the movies you will watch, should have a beginning, a middle and an end. Please give me all three parts of your paper. WHAT WILL I EXPECT FROM THE PAPERS AND HOW WILL THEY BE GRADED? The papers are to be no less than five to seven (5-7) pages. The paper should be single-spaced, have one inch margins, and have page numbers. The font should be Times or Times New Roman and nothing bigger than 12 point. In addition to the information on the grading rubric, the grading criteria are as follows: The balance in your paper between the storythat is, your description of the movie, your telling of the taleand your sociological analysis should be weighted towards the critical more than the descriptive. I will be looking at how well you describe the movie, relationships, and situations (i.e., with concrete facts and vivid details), but will be more interested in how well you analyze the relationships in the context of what weve discussed about the theory youre using. I obviously expect explicit references to course concepts and readings. Mechanics: Is the paper free of spelling, typographical, and grammatical errors? Are sources correctly cited throughout the paper and in the bibliography? Use APA documentation style for citations. I will take off 1/2 a point for every error up to 20 points.

Sociological Research
12 pt. font, times new roman, APA Format 1. Introduction The introduction will serve to introduce the topic and idea to your audience (i.e. me). In this case, you need to construct an introduction that motivates an interest in the topic as well as introduces the basic necessities of understanding to your reader. To that end, your introduction should focus primarily on your issue of interest (the pay gap, for example). Make sure there is a clear thesis of what your overall paper is as well as the research question youre attempting to answer. It should give some insight into the components that underlie that issue 2. Literature Review The literature review serves to fine tune your point further and helps you to focus on where you are most specifically interested, namely the key independent variable(s) that you think influence the problem you are trying to understand. You need to work through your idea here about what you identify as happening. This works to take what youre interested in and give insight into how its complex. So, make sure your literature review discusses what influences what youre interested, with special focus on the primary independent variable youre focused on. For example, say you were interested in the voting behaviors of people. Your literature review would note what influences people to vote and why. So, youd most likely have some discussion of how and why race influences voter preference, as well as some discussion of some things like gender, income, etc. That way your reader understands the complexity of the issue, but keep in mind your major focus. 3. Hypotheses/Expectations These should clearly articulate what you are expecting to see in terms of your key independent variable(s) influencing your dependent variable, or at least the what you expect to see. For example: at this point Id make the claim of what I expect to see in my own data as it flows from the literature review I just did. Note that these need to make sense with the literature you just reviewed! These are logically deduced from what you’ve read. 4. Proposed Methodology and Data Collection Strategy In this section, you will need to discuss the method and sampling approach that is best suited for what you want to do. Discuss the method in detail, with a major focus on its strengths and why it is well suited for what youre trying to do. Basically, the why is the most important. For this you’ll be pulling from the readings and lectures in terms of defining and substantiating your approach. You’re not collecting the data, you’re saying that you will collect the data. Additionally, make sure that you discuss which sampling approach is best suited for obtaining your respondents and why you think it is well suited. Again, this should be discussed in detail. 5. Conclusion The conclusion reiterates your main research question and the points youre expecting to address and why. Highlight how your research fits within and is useful for the broader area youre arguing for. Additionally, note what you cant address in this project but make sure you present how this gets us moving forward and basis for understanding and pursuing future research 6. References In addition to using in-text citations, you must also have a references list. Use whichever citation method you want but it must be uniform!
