Gender and Social Change

Watch the film, Iron Jawed Angels and write a 500-word opinion piece (that’s about two double-spaced pages). Do not recap the film or the clip (I’ve seen them) but write a thoughtful commentary on how we think about gender, human rights, and social change today. In doing so, you might consider which character you most identify with and why and how we put contemporary voter suppression, mostly along racial, ethnic, gendered, and socio-economic lines together with suffrage. Write in your own voice, modeling the persuasiveness of a newspaper op-ed or commentary, You will be evaluated on the sophistication and depth of your response, your ability to make connections to the present, your attention to intersectionality, and the quality of your writing.  Include a creative title! THEMES TO CONSIDER ·       What were the most important takeaways or perspectives for you? ·       How did this historical context inform your current understanding of feminism, gender injustice, and social change?  ·       What does it say when different groups have different priorities or strategies even when they share similar goals?   ·       If access to the vote is not your primary concern today, why not? Lack of interest in voting? OR little reason to think you will be impacted? What do we make of intersectionality here? And what is a bigger concern for you? And what are the intersectionality gender implications of your primary concern? Link for the video   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOrD0tH_WaM

Norms or Expectations

Deviance is defined in sociology as those activities or appearances that are discouraged or condemned due to them not being consistent with the norms or expectations of the larger group. Often, acts that are considered deviant by one group or at one time may be seen as normal by another group or at another time. For a group of bikers in a bar, several exposed tattoos may be considered the norm, while the same exposed tattoos in the courtroom on an attorney may be seen as deviant. When we express deviance (or compliance), we often experience the consequences of sanctions. Sanctions are those positive or negative reactions we receive from others to either encourage to continue an approved behavior or discourage us from continuing with one that is deviant. Discussion: Can you describe a time in your life when you wanted to do something and decided against it because you feared sanctions that someone important to you might apply? Explain. (Ferrante, 2016, p 205).Ferrante, J. (2016). Seeing sociology, an introduction, 3rd ed. Boston: Cengage. Disconnected from Nature

Our society is becoming more and more disconnected from nature.  This assignment is designed to get you back “into” nature!  For the assignment, you will be required to spend 1 hour in nature and then write an essay regarding your perceptions of nature and how nature makes you feel.  The 1 hour of “nature sitting” should be done without electronics – no i-pods, CD players, game-boys, pinball machines, cell phones, portable DVD players, laptops, or blackberries!  You should be by yourself or with someone that will let you be alone with nature and your thoughts.  Pick a place to go outside (that’s where nature is!).  Good places include your backyard, the campus, the beach, a park, in a boat, on a float, riding a goat…..  Sorry!  Think about the sounds, smells, sights that you encounter.  How did they make you feel?  For example, My nature memories of Hawk Mountain in Pennsylvania included feeling like I was on top of the world – birds were soaring past me on top of the mountain.  That was the closest that I will ever come to having an idea of what it is like to fly like a bird.  Did nature trigger any questions? The essay should consist of at least 750 words and submitted as a .docx or .pdf file.  Spelling and grammar will count! The grading rubric is attached to help guide you! The essay should be at least 750 words in length. One hour of Nature observation Described The assignment is to sit in nature for one full hour and then write an essay about it. This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeEssay Topic is AppropriateThe essay should discuss how nature’s impact on the student.
