For Part I of your Final Project, you will comprehensively evaluate an article of your choice that reports on a qualitative study. (Remember, a study that uses qualitative methods utilizes data that is not numerical.) Locate an article in the professional literature that addresses a topic you are interested in. Use the Area of Interest interactive (Links to an external site.) to assist you with this process. The article you select should describe a qualitative study and should have all or most of the expected sections, either with their own headings or embedded in the article, including: Introduction, Literature Review, Methods, Results, and Discussion. In writing your evaluation of the article, you will use the information in Section 3.3 in your text. Do not simply tell what is in the article, but evaluate it using the questions in your text. Explain and justify your evaluation based on specific examples from the article. Your paper should be 2100-2800 words (not counting the title, abstract and reference pages) and comprehensively evaluate an article of a qualitative study. Use proper APA formatting and good writing and organization in your evaluation paper. In addition to your 2100-2800 word paper, upload a .pdf copy of the article to the Waypoint dropbox. The following questions may help you in evaluating your articles, though you do not have to follow this format exactly. Be sure not to format your review as a Q/A list of responses. Rather construct a cohesive narrative focused on key themes in the literature. Evaluate the Introduction and Literature Review. Do the researchers present an adequate rationale for conducting the study? Explain. What is the significance of the study?  What difference will it make to the field? Is the literature review thorough and comprehensive? Do the researchers demonstrate any potential biases in the literature review? Are all important concepts clearly defined by the researchers? Do the researchers clearly describe previous methods that are relevant to understanding the purpose for conducting this study? Evaluate the Purpose Statement. Does the article clearly state the purpose statement? What is the purpose statement as expressed in the article? Is the purpose statement clearly based on the argument developed in the literature review? Evaluate the Methods Section. Is a particular qualitative research design used (ethnography, case study, etc.)?  If so, what is it? Is the research design consistent with the purpose presented in the introduction? Did the researcher introduce any bias in the procedures used? What type of sampling method is used?  Is that appropriate? Are relevant demographic characteristics of the sample clearly identified? Do the methods of sample selection used by the researchers provide a good representative sample, based on the population? Are there any apparent biases in selection of the sample? Is the sample size large enough for the study proposed? What data collection method was used in the study (such as direct observation, interviews, survey)? Is there an adequate description of the interview protocol or other instruments used? What biases or limitations might there be in the data collection method? Evaluate the Results Section. How were the qualitative data analyzed? Is the analysis method clearly described? In describing the results, are concrete examples of the data clearly linked to identified themes, concepts, and/or theories?  Are these examples adequate? Evaluate the Discussion Section. Do the researchers clearly restate the purpose and research questions? Do the researchers clearly discuss the implications of the findings and how they relate to theories, other findings, and actual practice? Do the researchers identify potential limitations of the study and the results? Do the researchers identify possible directions for future research? Remaining Questions. What aspects of qualitative methods do you still find challenging? Was there any information in the above list that you were not able to find in the article you chose?

Systems Analysis   Your team has been charged with evaluating a systems upgrade for a software company called Gatorware Software. Currently, Gatorware Software creates software used by Healthcare Management Organizations (HMO’s), Federally Insured Banks and Financial Institutions, as well employee payroll systems.   Current Environment (NOTE: if there are terms/equipment/strategies you are not familiar with here research them! If in doubt email me):   -two main campuses.   -all software development done in-house.   -IBM mainframe computers onsite with proprietary AIX Unix operating systems.   -thin client workstations are connected to the mainframes.   -all main code repositories stored onsite using Subversion (SVN) as a source code control tool.   -software development teams use internal email to collaborate.   -main system development methodology used is Structured Analysis using Object Orientated (O-O) methods with stress on the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and the waterfall model.   -all source code is backed up by nightly tape backups using LTO-7 Ultrium tapes and tape autoloader.   -completed tapes are securely stored offsite with Iron Mountain.   -main campuses communicate through a legacy dedicated frame relay network maintained locally by their IT departments which have a special arrangement with their local ISP.   -remote access to the development, Q/A, or production environments is strictly forbidden accept for a secure website (internally hosted by IT) where customers can securely log in and download their latest patches and updates.       New Environment:       -will still maintain two main campuses but also several satellite offices.   -software development still mainly to be done in-house but will contract out some work to third party consultants.   -will be moving the development, Q/A, and production environments out to the cloud using Amazon Web Services (AWS) as well as Docker and Kubernetes.   -the company has adopted a new Software As A Service (SaaS) model of operation and customers subscribe to use their products logging into the cloud based service hosted by AWS to get access to their own container configured to their specifications.   -onsite the mainframe environment will be replaced with a series of Dell PowerEdge servers that will support a series of Dell Windows workstations.   -GitHub is to be used for source code control tool and development team collaboration will be done using Slack.   -the main system development methodology will transition to an agile approach stressing Extreme Programming (XP) methods.   -remote access to all environments will be provided through VPN so that third party vendors can have access to the company’s systems as well as IT staff that will telecommute. Management would also like to implement a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy at any of their locations.       REQUIRED –Briefing Document (make sure you follow the format specified for a Briefing Document as per the sample Briefing Document under Course Resources):   Provide a briefing document that evaluates in detail the impact of transitioning to the new proposed environment. Every item mentioned must be discussed in terms of its impact upon:   Training of staff. Difficulty of implementation. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) –short term and long term (if actual numbers are not available provide an overview of what you believe the impact would be on TCO long and short term). Impact upon system documentation. Any changes to internal policies and procedures. Impact upon security. Any additional concerns. In addition, management would like you to recommend a backup solution for the new system.   Make sure that valid external references are provided and listed at the end of your Briefing Document to support all your main points/conclusions.

Review “Some Elements of the Scientific Method” (handout: especially steps 4, 5, and 6). Make a detailed outline of how you would design a realistic experiment to test the following hypothesis: “A vegetarian diet is better than a meat-containing diet for puppies after they have been weaned (i.e. when they’re at least 12 weeks old)” Identify the dependent/outcome and the independent/controlled variables and mention all the important steps to be followed in the design of your experiment, e.g. sample size, feeding times, exercise, repetition(s).  You don’t have to invent results of the experiment or get into detailed data analysis, but give enough details that other researchers would be able to repeat your experiment exactly.

The assignment topic is “Anthropogenic factors on external forcing of climate change” The 3 points of focus are: Human’s are increasingly influencing the climate and earth’s temperature by: 1. burning fossil fuels 2. cutting down rainforests & 3. farming livestock.
