Medical Model
Though the philosophy and values surrounding couple and family counseling emphasize prevention and wellness, awareness of diagnosis is important when interacting with other mental health professionals who may view mental health issues through the medical model. The DSM-5, the primary diagnostic system/manual used in the United States by such professionals, identifies and describes individual mental health disorders, not relational issues or disorders. Those mental health professionals who adopt a systems or relational view of mental health have been able to implement small changes within the DSM in its subsequent editions, and these changes acknowledge the systemic influence on certain individual disorders. Nevertheless, there is not yet an adopted diagnostic structure for relational problems. Therefore, you may sometimes need to negotiate your relational perspective with other professionals and communicate client matters with insurance reimbursement boards (who see mental health problems as an individual in nature) in their language. For this Discussion, you will examine the DSM-5 and how it informs your professional practice. You also explore the advantages and disadvantages of being familiar with the DSM-5. By Day 4Post an example of a specific instance in which you may need to consult with another mental health professional who utilizes the DSM-5. Then, explain how your familiarity with the DSM-5 may influence this consultation. Next, explain one advantage and one disadvantage of a couple and family practitioner being familiar with the DSM-5. Be specific. For more information read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_model
Human Behavior and Mental Processes
You will have to complete a term paper. The subject is of your choice. It can be anything having to do with human behavior or mental processes. Some students choose to do their papers on a psychological disorder. Others choose to do more non-conventional topics. I have had topics on “Why people get tattoos”, “the Psychology of Water”,. The following link is a description. The paper has to be in APA style. I have also included a link that describes APA. You must cite your sources in the body as well as works cited page, and a title page.
Attention and Memory
Information processing theories focus on many basic capacities of children’s cognition, like attention and memory. There are many different topics that we can get into, but let’s look at a few hot topics that hopefully are interesting and relevant. Write an original post on one of these discussion boards. Then, respond to 2 of your peers. It may be good to see what others have done in other discussion boards as well! young children need a lot of sleep. Does that actually impact a child’s memory and cognition? Read this short blog type article from a researcher about her study on naps and memory. What are your reactions to this study? What policies should we have as a society?
