Part I: Develop a Focused Research Question ALREADY COMPLETED: How do the different parenting styles (authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, neglectful) effect the adolescent child’s development of self-esteem? Think of a topic that interests you. Develop a research question that addresses a very focused aspect of that topic. For example, instead of saying how does bullying affect student achievement in middle school.    Part II: Annotated Bibliography  Once you have decided on a specific topic from a development psychology perspective you will need to find three journal articles on your topic. I recommend using the databases provided online through your school library or at http://journals.plos.org/plosone/browse/psychology. The articles that you use should be peer reviewed and from scholarly journals or sources. Once you have located the articles you wish to use, write an annotated bibliography following APA guidelines.    Part III: Body of the Paper- Research Summary/Literary Review  Abstract: Remember in your reading that an abstract is:  The concise summary of the article  It should summarize the most important features of the manuscript, providing the reader with a global first impression on the article  It is generally is just one paragraph that explains the experiment (or proposal) as well as a short synopsis of the results (or how the results will be reported)  Introduction: Remember in your reading that an introduction:  Provides background information about the origin and purpose of performing the experiment or study  Reviews previous research and presents existing theories on the topic  Use your 3+ sources to describe the research that has already been done on your topic. Do not discuss individual articles, discuss them as a set, making sure to cite your sources according to APA guidelines throughout. Your discussion should include the following:  The purpose of the studies/research  Summary of Methodology- (survey, case study, observation, experiment, archival study, etc) including detail on vocabulary such as Samples, Measurements used, and Procedures  General Findings- a summary results and discussions  Critique- Discuss what the researchers did will and could improve in their questions and methods. Provide specific evidence to support the general strengths and weakness such as the validity and reliability of each study. This section should include the following:  Strengths of the research including discussion on ethics, methods used, samples (size, avoiding bias), measures, procedures, interpretations and relevance of the research questions of findings.  Weaknesses of the research including discussion on ethics, methods used, samples (size, avoiding bias), measures, procedures, interpretations and relevance of the research questions of findings.  Practical Implications- what external validity do these studies have for politicians, parents, educators, practioners, professionals, other possible constituents of the research  Methods: Remember from your reading that the methods section should:  Covers the methodologies (survey, case study, observation, experiment, archival study etc) used to investigate the research question, including the identification of participants, procedures, and materials as well as a description of the actual procedure  Should be sufficiently detailed to allow for replication  Since you will be proposing research instead of doing the research, you should describe what you would use for participants, procedures, and materials in enough detail that it could be replicated  Results: The results section presents key findings of the research, including reference to indicators of statistical significance  Sine you will not be actually doing the research, you will not have results to report. Instead in this section you will be discussing how you would report your results. Will the results be reported quantitatively or qualitatively? If quantitative, what measures of analysis will be used to describe your results? ETC.  Part IV: Final Paper  This is where all the parts will come together in one cohesive document. Your final paper must be typed, double spaced, and in times new roman 12-point font. It must be submitted in APA format:  Title page, Abstract, Introduction, Body (with headings, Annotated Bibliography)
