Course–Politics of Africa State the objectives of the paper at the beginning; ten full type-written pages (double-spaced) using direct scholarly sources, and an attached bibliography page.  The subtitle is Nationalism and Independence Professor:  Ambassador Bismarck Myrick (In researching this paper see if you can find a reference by the professor. Make sure the objectives are stated along with point of view with evidence that supports it.  Writing should be well organized.

The questions for your HSS 353 Research Synthesis Paper are the following:   What kind of problems do women encounter who challenge the gender expectations of their societies, either through their everyday behavior, or through their feminist attitudes and activism? And why is it often other women who oppose such efforts to struggle for a better life for women?    For your answers, please try to compare and synthesize information from the three articles on this subject that I gave you under the title “Gendered Identities” on Blackboard. These are the texts by Deniz Kandiyoti, Amalia Sa’ar, and Uma Narayan. You can of course also include other sources that you are familiar with and that help you find answers to these questions. Your paper should be about 4-5 pages long. It must have in-text-citation and a bibliography with all the sources you have used.     IMPORTANT!!! You will be graded according to the following criteria: How well do you answer the main questions? How well do you synthesize information from these three articles? (for example: Do you point out similarities and/or differences between the authors’ main arguments? Are you able to summarize shared views? Are you able to use ethnographic data from different sources to provide evidence for an argument? Do you highlight additional insights by one author that the others might not have included in their texts?)    How well is your paper organized? Does it have introduction, main body and conclusion? A role of elections is to give governments legitimacy.  IF we feel that our elections are NOT free/fair, we begin to question that legitimacy. If enough citizens question the legitimacy, democracy becomes weakened. We must first know how the system works to identify any possible weaknesses so that we can improve/strengthen rather than weaken our democracy.  In American presidential elections, explain fully the following in essay format (do NOT simply answer a list!): 1. Party Conventions * What time frame in the election year do these occur? * Talk about at least 3 specific things that each political party will accomplish at its convention * What is the role of the media during the conventions? How does that affect the success of the party nominee?  Use “priming” and “framing” terminology to explain this. 4. General Election “Season” * When is this “season” of the election year? * Describe how it is different from the Primary and Caucus Season * What are the candidates (now called nominees – why?) trying to gain? * Why is more media attention on the battleground states during this time? 5. Election Day * Specifically, how do we know when this day is every 4 years? * What is the role of the popular vote? * What motivates people to go vote? * What are the implications for the system when large percentages of the voting age public (VAP) do not go vote for whatever reason? * What is the role of electors? 1. How many total electors are there in the Electoral College and how many must a nominee get to win the presidency? 6. When is the Inauguration of the President? What are the weaknesses of the system? Write a 500- to 750-word paper in which you discuss the pros and cons of polls, their accuracy, and their relevance in taking the public “pulse” on important topics. Incorporate how interest groups and other lobbying efforts impact polls and voting outcomes. Consider how things in the media may influence public opinion and who is more likely to vote in demographics (e.g., voting trends of older adults versus younger adults).

Systematic Literature Review – Topic Proposal Instructions Submit a research question on a topic related to the political science subfield identified during your Self-Identification Assessment. Specify your research question using the guidelines below. Explain the procedures you will use to ensure there is a comprehensive balance of views registered in the identification of literature so that the works listed are representative of all major perspectives. The search for truth requires a thorough search without a priori bias. Identify the relevant search engines, databases, and scholarly journal publications you will use to identify key voices on the research question.

Prepare a 250- to 300-word response on Political Parties: What are the functions of political parties? Research one American political party and discuss important features of the party’s platform. What role have third parties had in American history?

Evaluate decisions and impacts of key government leaders during the “Blackberry Panic of 2008”. Provide an evaluation of those decisions and impacts in light of the model of statesmanship introduced in this module/week’s presentation. The following are the required reading for the class.
