Find three credible sources that discuss critical thinking. One source should be from the assigned and/or optional readings, (Topic 1 study materials), and the other two should be found through your own research from within the library. Read the three sources and consider how they define critical thinking. In 300-500 words, define critical thinking and expand on what skills are needed to work through the critical thinking process and/or how critical thinking is enhanced. Keep the following guidelines in mind:   The sources you found in your research may influence your definition, but your own ideas should be evident. In other words, your process should be: a) Read some definitions and descriptions of critical thinking; b) Comprehend or digest the information, and c) create a synthesized definition of critical thinking. Paraphrasing is preferred. Include an in-text citation whenever paraphrasing or using a direct quote. Keep direct quotes between 0-3 per essay. A reference page that documents the three sources you found (and any other resources you used) is required. Remember, all sources must be cited both in-text and on your reference page. (Note: Do not simply reword the definitions you read. Consider how you will explain what critical thinking is.) Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Analyze the role of community corrections to address the needs of special populations. When conducting your analysis consider those special correctional populations that are more appropriately served with community corrections supervision instead of incarceration. Large word-for-word quotes are not permitted as well. Direct quotes, if used need to be only a sentence or two long. Instead, most cited material needs to be paraphrased. Remember each assignment must be submitted as a Word Doc attachment. The assignment needs be written in 12 point font, using Times Roman. Margins will also need to be 1’ inch.

For your essay title, use whatever topic you chose, like Children of Thalidomide. (Three-part thesis example from our topic choices: Though Woodstock is one of the most widely known music festivals of all time, many are unaware of the problems the event posed regarding finding a location, caring for such a large crowd, and cleaning up after the event.) You must incorporate research exclusively from the APUS library into your essay. Use two or three sources—no more, no less. Remember that your essay should be mostly your own writing (~80%) and approximately 20% source material. This is short essay, so use short quotes only. I suggest only a line or two of quoted material in each of your body paragraphs. Don’t forget your Works Cited page. Include the APUS library URL (https) after each Works Cited entry so that I can click on it and double-check your article. You can just copy and paste it from your web browser. Extensive MLA help is provided under week four (Lessons and Resources). Please do not let anyone else write or revise your writing. My job is to help you improve YOUR writing. I can only do that if you let me see your mistakes. I am not interested in how well someone else writes. I want to help YOU! Download the template and save it as your last name and Essay 2. (Example: Smith_Essay2). The MLA formatting is done for you (e.g., Times New Roman size 12, double-spaced, header, etc.). Update your name, your professor’s name, and date. Don’t forget to put your last name in the header. (Let me know if you don’t know how to get into the header section or type a question into your Word help section.) Your essay should be between 500 and 750 words. Please do not go under the word count at all. Do not go over the word count by more than 50 words. Following instructions is an important part of any writing assignment, and often you will be asked to adhere to word count guidelines, so this is good practice! Be sure that all paragraphs are well developed. I suggest 5-8 sentences per paragraph and no less than 100 words per paragraph, including your introduction and conclusion. (Points saver: as you proof your essay in Word, hit the control [ctrl] key and the “F” key at the same time. This will bring up the search feature. Type in what you wish to find, such as the word you, to be sure you have avoided second person. This works in finding contractions too. Type in an apostrophe and hit enter!) When you “submit” your paper, it will be uploaded into Turnitin (a plagiarism-detection website) automatically. You do not have to create a Turnitin account yourself. Both you and your instructor will receive the results. (The Turnitin report will be under Assignments and will have a percentage on it, like 22%. Click on the percentage to view your report. Certain parts of your essay will be highlighted. This shows where you have used information from a library source or material that appears in another student’s essay.) This is the final product of your independent study and should be less than 4,000 words, excluding the bibliography and any appendixes (if applicable). This does not have to have original empirical work as a dissertation, but it should be more than just an extended essay. As a student in the final year, your project should demonstrate that you understand the significance and key aspects of your chosen planning issue. It should be more than just an essay and should be based on desk-based research, guided by a structured framework (e.g. theory, assessment tool, conceptual framework), and discussed in terms of how it fits within wider planning debates. There is flexibility with respect to how you structure the project, but it should include an introduction with a clear statement of the research question. The body of the text should have appropriate sub-headings and follow a logical structure. You should also include a concluding section that summarises the key messages and points of your argument. More guidance about how to structure your final assignment will be given in tutorials. Your project will be assessed with respect to how well you demonstrate achievement of the module’s learning outcomes.

Culture Interaction Essay: This assignment requires that you have an intercultural interaction with someone from a culture different than your own, read about that different culture in depth, reflect upon it and write about it. Once you have identified the “friend” you will be interacting with for this assignment, read up about their culture and history ahead of time. Formulate some questions you want to ask them about their culture and experience. Spend 2-3 “contact hours” with the person or group from a culture different from your own. Talk to them or interview them about their culture. Observe their interactions (if spending time with a family or group). The purpose of this assignment is to help you learn about a cultural system that is different from yours through reading and through interactions with members of that cultural group. Write a 3-4 page reflective paper about the intercultural experience in which you have participated. The paper must also include a title page and reference page.
