In the US, a common worry of parents is whether their children have a high self-esteem. In the age of increased awareness of the ramifications of bullying behavior (physical, verbal, and relational-aggression), as well as increased competition it is no wonder parents are concerned. Aleksandar is a coordinator of athletic programs for Centervale. In the past, parents have insisted on participation trophies for all kids playing sports between the ages of 5 and 11. There is currently a debate in Centervale regarding whether participation trophies for everyone should continue through middle school as well. Some parents think it will help with self-esteem, while other parents recall never getting participation trophies when they were growing up and think losing can be a good lesson. Think about what you have learned in this module about physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development in middle childhood.
What type of parenting style would lend itself well to creating a healthy self-esteem? Why?
What would your recommendation be to the sports organizer who wonders if everyone should receive a trophy just for participating?
What arguments can be made on both sides of the debate?
Remember to support your responses by citing your weekly readings from the online notes and the textbook.
Write your initial response in 45 paragraphs. Support your statements with readings and research. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
Children with learning disabilities may lose their self-esteem and confidence, especially in school; this lack of confidence may lead to poor performance, which creates a vicious cycle as school performance suffers. However, there are ways you can boost your childs self-esteem and confidence in schoolwork.
Encourage Talent
Encourage your childs natural talent and gifts. If your child is musically gifted, enroll him or her in the school band or musical.
Encouraging children to participate in activities they are naturally good at will give them a boost of self-confidence. For children, knowing they are good at something will also help them cope if they dont do as well on an assignment in school.
Model Acceptance
As a parent, your child looks up to you and learns much of his or her behavior from you. Model the types of behavior you want to see in your children, especially acceptance of mistakes.
If you accept your mistakes and the mistakes of others, your child will do the same. Accepting ones own mistakes grows self-esteem. When your child has an outburst or gets a poor grade, say, I love you and I know you tried your best.
Eliminate Comparisons
Children form their own identities and sense of self. By comparing children to someone else, even in a positive way, you are teaching them that their sense of self worth depends on how theyre doing compared to others.
You must teach your child to note his or her own progress and achievements without comparisons. Here are some ways you can replace or eliminate comparisons with other children:
Instead of suggesting your child needs to set aside more study time that peers do to accommodate a learning disability, suggest that your child needs to study more than in previous school years.
Instead of asking how your child did compared to the class, as

EKG Definition
An EKG, also called an ECG or electrocardiogram, is a recording of the hearts electrical activity. It is a quick and painless procedure. EKGs captures a tracing of cardiac electrical impulse as it moves from the atrium to the ventricles. These electrical impulses cause the heart to contract and pump blood. EKGs are interpreted by medical professionals to understand the following:
Heart rate
Heartbeat regularity
Strength and timing of the electrical signals
Any possible abnormal conditions
EKG Training Introduction
Use our lessons, drills and quizzes to improve your EKG knowledge and skills.
EKG Interpretation Introduction
This introductory course reviews the main features of electrocardiogram strips. A method for analyzing an electrocardiogram is presented. This method includes assessment of rhythm, calculating heart rate, observing P-wave forms, measurement of wave intervals and segments and the evaluation of other relevant waves. In addition, our drills allow students to practice electrocardiogram identification.
EKG Practice Drills
The EKG practice drills provide a fast and interactive method for learning EKGs. Users are asked to identify the arrhythmia category. Immediate feedback is available after answering a multiple choice question.

Case Study 1 : Structure and Function of the Musculoskeletal System
Jennifer belongs to a womens rugby team. At 23 years old, she has been playing for five years and trains daily to keep up her strength and stamina. During one game, she was injured. Unable to walk, she was carried off the field supported by her coach and an athletic therapist. At the hospital, after an examination and MRI of her right knee, she was given her diagnosis. Jennifer suffered what is often termed the ODonoghue triad: a ruptured medial collateral ligament, a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, and tear of the medial meniscus.
Jennifers injury involved the complete tearing of two ligaments. What are the similarities and differences between the anatomy and function of ligaments and tendons?
Jennifers rehabilitation will include techniques that will increase her joint proprioception. What is proprioception, and what will occur if this neural function is not restored?
The knee joint exemplifies a diarthrodial joint. What are the anatomy of the synovial membrane and the importance of synovial fluid in such a joint?

Disorders of Musculoskeletal Function: Trauma, Infection, Neoplasms
Marvin is a healthy, active 36-year-old who belongs to a martial arts club. Once a week he takes lessons in Judo, and on the weekends, he participates in local competitions. At his last competition, Marvin was paired with a skilled participant from another club. His rival threw him to the mats, and as Marvin struggled, came down hard to pin him down. Marvin heard a snap, followed by instant pain in his left forearm. Radiographs at the local hospital confirmed he suffered a transverse fracture of the distal aspect of his left ulna.
What are the typical signs and symptoms of a fracture? Why shortly after the injury does the pain temporarily subside?
How does a hematoma form, and what function does it serve in the process of healing a fracture?
Marvin was told he would be seeing a physiotherapist as his healing progressed. What are the muscular and joint changes that occur during immobilization and the ways Marvin and his physiotherapist can work to address these changes?

Disorders of Musculoskeletal Function: Developmental and Metabolic Disorders
Mandy is a 16-year-old competitive figure skater who practices several hours a day with her coach at the skating arena. Because of her extremely active lifestyle and restricted diet to maintain her athletic physique, she experiences ongoing amenorrhea. One day during practice, she landed a jump and fell to the ice in pain. Her left foot swelled up almost immediately, making it difficult for her coach to remove the skate. At the hospital, radiographs revealed a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone and general radiolucency of all the bones in her foot. A follow-up DXA revealed a bone mass of 2.7 standard deviations below mean.
What is the etiology of Mandys premature osteoporosis, and how her condition is thought to contribute to a decrease in bone density?
Knowing what you do about bone mineralization, why does a deficiency of estrogen in women lead to osteoporotic change?
Osteoporosis and osteomalacia both involve abnormal bone mineralization. What are the general macroscopic differences of these two conditions?
Case Study 4
Disorders of Musculoskeletal Function: Rheumatic Disorders
Rick is a 27-year-old who works in an accounting firm. He had started to experience lower back pain and stiffness that he thought were a result of the long hours he spent at his desk. More recently, however, he began to have sleep difficulties. He found that he often woke up during the night feeling hot and sometimes sweaty. Furthermore, his back pain disrupted his sleep, particularly when it radiated around his pelvis and into his thighs. When his lack of sleep began to interfere with his work, he went to an osteopath to see what was wrong. She listened to his case history carefully. Upon physical examination, she noted a slight decrease in his lumbar lordosis and a reduced range of movement in his lumbar spine. His blood tests revealed the presence of HLA-B27, an elevated ESR, and absence of RH. His radiograph showed evidence of sacroiliitis.
What is the likely diagnosis Rick received? What are the common clinical presentation and manifestations of the disease?
Why is osteoarthritis of the hips a potential secondary complication of this disease? What are the structural changes that occur in the articular cartilage of an osteoarthritic joint?
What is the effect of advanced ankylosing spondylitis on lung function?
Case Study 5
Structure and Function of the Skin
Yael is an 18-year-old college student who is bothered by excessive perspiration. She knew she sweat a lot under her arms and kept antiperspirant in her schoolbag to use throughout the day. Yaels problem was not limited to under her arms, however. Her hands and feet also perspired heavily, and it embarrassed her. She did not like holding her boyfriends hand if her hands were particularly sweaty, and she had problems grasping her pen while in class because her palm became slippery. Yael suffered from a condition called primary focal hyperhidrosis, a condition involving hyperactive sweat glands in certain areas of the body.
What are the anatomical and functional differences between eccrine and apocrine glands?
What autonomic nervous system controls the function of thermoregulation of the skin? How do goosebumpsgoose bumps contribute to heat conservation?
Describe the location of the blood plexuses in the skin. How is blood circulation to the skin involved in thermoregulation?
Case Study 6
Disorders of Skin Integrity and Function
Leonard works in the agriculture industry and raises beef cattle. At 60 years of age, he has spent most of his life working outdoors harvesting hay and tending to his herds. His wife was the first to notice a change in his skin. One day, after taking off his shirt, she noticed a significant change in the mole he had on his right shoulder. It not only was darker but was moist and appeared to have been bleeding at one point. Surrounding the mole, his skin was red. His wife remembered hearing stories of Leonard working on his fathers farm, spending long hours out in the hot sun even though his father had gone into the barn to work during the hottest part of the day. She insisted him go to the family physician to have it examined.
Leonards physician performed a biopsy on the lesion and told Leonard he suspected the growth may be malignant melanoma. What cells are affected in this form of skin cancer? How might his childhood exposures to the sun predispose him to this form of cancer?
How do UVA and UVB rays contribute to the process of oncogenesis in skin cells?
The mole on Leonards shoulder was a nevocellular nevus. What are the cellular composition and appearance of this type of mole before it underwent malignant change?

Guidelines for organization:
You are the director of respiratory therapy at a large regional medical center. There is an 85 year old, female, Hispanic patient in the adult intensive care unit. The admitting diagnosis for the patient is stroke. Prior to admission the patient had a history of heart and pulmonary problems, and lung cancer (successfully treated by surgery and radiation 10 years ago). Tests conducted since admission have discovered early stage liver cancer. The patient has been in a comatose state ever since admission, unable to communicate or move. Since Patient is unable to
breathe on her own, she is also on a ventilator. The patient was admitted 15 days ago, she is without insurance and has no proof of citizenship. The hospital business office wants to know if she can be discharged from AICU which costs the
hospital $9,000 per day, or if the family will agree to disconnect the ventilator. The attending physician is new on the medical staff and is unsure of the patients prognosis. The AICU is full so the discharge planner is under pressure from his supervisor to free up the bed, which is needed for other critical patients.
The patients family has been adamant that God will perform a miracle and the patient will walk out of the hospital. They are strongly against withdrawal of any life support or of reducing any standard of care. Patients children are all adults, natural born citizens of the U.S. who own a successful well known local business.
A local TV station has been covering the story although they have not publicly disclosed the patients name. The state governor has come out publicly stating that illegal aliens are a drain on our states resources and should be sent back to their countries of origin. The governors challenger (whose daughter is a nursing student in AICU) says there is a moral duty to care for everyone. You are scheduled to meet with the hospital ethics committee tomorrow. After the meeting you, the physician, and the AICU chaplain are to meet with the patients family regarding the patients course of care. How will you prepare for the upcoming meeting with the hospital ethics committee? What issues do you
expect will come up during that meeting? What will you say to the patients
family? Prepare the portfolio paper using the following guidelines:
A minimum of 8 pages not to exceed 12, typed, double spaced, Times New Roman font, using APA standard Title page, including title of paper, your name, course name and course number, date of submission (page 1)
A minimum of 8 pages including a summary of your understanding of the biblical implications for the topic (pages 2-11) Apply the model for making moral decisions studied in Unit Three What about patient autonomy?
Rationing of health care resources?
Conflicting views regarding end of life care?
What could have been done to avoid this?
What about privacy?
Are there any federal laws which are relevant to this patients care?
Is the ACHE Code of Ethics helpful?
Does anything change if your hospital:
(a) is a state owned facility; or
(b) is affiliated with a certain Christian denomination; or
(c) if it is a private for profit facility? Anything else you think to be relevant
A reference page (page 12) A minimum of 6 references are required, including the text, the Holy Bible, books and articles from academic sources (Net Library), and other periodicals.
