The Functions of The Accessory Organs of Digestion in The Digestive Process
The digestive process is a complex activity that involves several body organs for the breakdown of food into useful chemicals. The involved organs are known as accessory organs which their main function is to secrete or store substances that are needed for digestion (Chruscik et al., 2021). These accessory organs include the salivary glands, liver, gall bladder, and pancreas. Each one of these organs has a special function that aids in breaking down the food into useful chemicals and nutrients for the ingestion, digestion, and absorption in the body system, as well as secretion of the unwanted waste in the digestion process. To begin with, the saliva glands are responsible for the moistening of the food during the first stage of the digestion process. The saliva contains important enzymes and proteins that aid in the lubrication and chemical breakdown of the food (Sonjaya & Fadlurahman, 2019).
On the other hand, the liver functions as a bile producer, where the secretion of the bile juice into the small intestines assists in the absorption of fats through the emulsification process. Nevertheless, the liver works hand in hand with the gall bladder as it acts as the storage of the bile that is secreted by the liver. The main function of the gall bladder, therefore, is the storage and concentration of the excess bile that is secreted by the liver (Sonjaya & Fadlurahman, 2019). Finally, on the pancreas, the work of this accessory organ is to secrete bicarbonate and digestive enzymes that are crucial in aiding the digestive process within the duodenum area (Chruscik et al., 2021). The main function of the pancreatic juice produced by the pancreas is to buffer the stomach acids, as well as assist in breaking down the proteins, fats, and carbohydrates for absorption within the body system. Therefore, all these accessory organs have a crucial function in assisting the digestive process as required.

Evidence-Based Proposal and Annotated Bibliography on Technology in Nursing
Evidence-Based Proposal and Annotated Bibliography on Technology in Nursing
Write a 4-6 page annotated bibliography where you identify peer-reviewed publications that promote the use of a selected technology to enhance quality and safety standards in nursing.
Introduction
Before you begin to develop the assessment you are encouraged to complete the Annotated Bibliography Formative Assessment. Completing this activity will help you succeed with the assessment and counts towards course engagement.
Rapid changes in information technology go hand-in-hand with progress in quality health care delivery, nursing practice, and interdisciplinary team collaboration. The following are only a few examples of how the health care field uses technology to provide care to patients across multiple settings:
Patient monitoring devices.
Robotics.
Electronic medical records.
Data management resources.
Ready access to current science.
Technology is essential to the advancement of the nursing profession, maintaining quality care outcomes, patient safety, and research.
This assessment will give you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of how technology can enhance quality and safety standards in nursing. You will prepare an annotated bibliography on technology in nursing. A well-prepared annotated bibliography is a comprehensive commentary on the content of scholarly publications and other sources of evidence about a selected nursing-related technology. A bibliography of this type provides a vehicle for workplace discussion to address gaps in nursing practice and to improve patient care outcomes. As nurses become more accountable in their practice, they are being called upon to expand their role of caregiver and advocate to include fostering research and scholarship to advance nursing practice. An annotated bibliography stimulates innovative thinking to find solutions and approaches to effectively and efficiently address these issues.
Preparation
To successfully complete this assessment, perform the following preparatory activities:
Select a single direct or indirect patient care technology that is relevant to your current practice or of interest to you. Direct patient care technologies require an interaction, or direct contact, between the nurse and patient. Nurses use direct patient care technologies every day when delivering care to patients. Electronic thermometers or pulse oximeters are examples of direct patient care technologies. Indirect patient care technologies, on the other hand, are those employed on behalf of the patient. They do not require interaction, or direct contact, between the nurse and patient. A handheld device for patient documentation is an example of an indirect patient care technology. Examples of topics to consider for your annotated bibliography include:
Delivery robots.
Electronic medication administration with barcoding.
Electronic clinical documentation with clinical decision support.
Patient sensor devices/wireless communication solutions.
Real-time location systems.
Telehealth.
Workflow management systems.
Conduct a library search using the various electronic databases available through the Capella University Library.
Consult the BSN Program Library Research Guide for help in identifying scholarly and/or authoritative sources.
Access the NHS Learner Success Lab, linked in the courseroom navigation menu, for additional resources.
Scan the search results related to your chosen technology.
Select four peer-reviewed publications focused on your selected topic that are the most interesting to you.
Evaluate the impact of patient care technologies on desired outcomes.
Analyze current evidence on the impact of a selected patient care technology on patient safety, quality of care, and the interdisciplinary team.
Integrate current evidence about the impact of a selected patient care technology on patient safety, quality of care, and the interdisciplinary team into a recommendation.
Notes
Publications may be research studies or review articles from a professional source. Newspapers, magazines, and blogs are not considered professional sources.
Your selections need to be currentwithin the last five years.
Annotated Bibliography
Prepare a 46 page annotated bibliography in which you identify and describe at least four peer-reviewed publications that promote the use of your selected technology to enhance quality and safety standards in nursing. Be sure that your annotated bibliography includes all of the following elements:
Introduction to the Selected Technology Topic
What is your rationale for selecting this particular technology topic? Why are you interested in this?
What research process did you employ?
Which databases did you use?
Which search terms did you use?
Note: In this section of your bibliography, you may use first-person since you are asked to describe your rationale for selecting the topic and the research strategies you employed. Use third person in the rest of the bibliography, however.
Annotation Elements
For each resource, include the full reference followed by the annotation.
Explain the focus of the research or review article you chose.
Provide a summary overview of the publication.
According to this source, what is the impact of this technology on patient safety and quality of care?
According to this source, what is the relevance of this technology to nursing practice and the work of the interdisciplinary health care team?
Why did you select this publication to write about out of the many possible options? In other words, make the case as to why this resource is important for health care practitioners to read.
Summary of Recommendation
How would you tie together the key learnings from each of the four publications you examined?
What organizational factors influence the selection of a technology in a health care setting? Consider such factors as organizational policies, resources, culture/social norms, commitment, training programs, and/or employee empowerment.
How would you justify the implementation and use of the technology in a health care setting? This is the section where you will justify (prove) that the implementation of the
patient care technology is appropriate or not. The evidence should be cited from the literature that was noted in the annotated bibliography.
Consider the impact of the technology on the health care organization, patientcare/satisfaction, and interdisciplinary team productivity, satisfaction, and retention.
Example Assessment: You may use the following to give you an idea of what a Proficient or higher rating on the scoring guide would look like:
Assessment 3 Example [PDF].
Additional Requirements
Written communication: Ensure written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
Length: 46-typed, double-spaced pages.
Number of resources: Cite a minimum of four peer-reviewed publications, not websites.
Font and font size: Use Times New Roman, 12 point.

Telehealth
Telehealth uses technology such as digital communications to facilitate the provision of health services, including medical care and health information services. The topic of Telehealth has become significant in todays healthcare system, due to the increasing physical barriers to healthcare access, especially during the COVID 19 pandemic (Snoswell et al., 2020). The controversies surrounding the safety of integration of information technology in healthcare have significantly impaired the adoption of Telehealth by many providers. Research studies on the issue have produced contradicting findings. It is essential to analyze current literature on the topic to determine whether Telehealth is worth adopting. This paper will conduct an annotated bibliography of studies on the benefits of Telehealth. In the paper, I used articles from the PubMed online database to conduct my research on Telehealth. My search terms and phrases were Telehealth and improving healthcare delivery using Telehealth.
Mataxen, P. A., & Webb, L. D. (2019). Telehealth nursing: More than just a phone call. Nursing2020, 49(4), 11-13. https://doi.org/10.1097/01.nurse.0000553272.16933.4b
The article sought to increase awareness of telehealth and its healthcare benefit. Answering healthcare questions through phone calls has been the norm since the 1970s. Patients call the doctors and nurses for inquiries about medication; pregnant mothers call nurses to seek information on their progression and schedule appointments. However, contrary to tradition, where only telephones were used to exchange health education information, today, the role of information technology in healthcare has become more comprehensive. The article gives evidence of the critical and expanded role telehealth plays in improving healthcare delivery services. In some health care settings, telehealth is employed in remote diagnosis of illnesses, delivery of health information, and guiding nurses in calming agitated patients or dispatching ambulances for emergencies. This article was selected because it provides critical information on how healthcare providers can utilize telehealth to improve the delivery of various healthcare services.
Rutledge, C. M., ORourke, J., Mason, A. M., Chike-Harris, K., Behnke, L., Melhado, L.,
& Gustin, T. (2021). Telehealth competencies for nursing education and practice: The four Ps of telehealth. Nurse Educator, 46(5), 300. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8395962/
As the campaigns to adopt telehealth intensifies, an equivalent effort to equip providers with the relevant competencies is missing. This is a significant factor in attaining the projected benefits of telehealth. The article seeks to enlighten the critical competencies necessary for providers involved in telehealth implementation. Telehealth is being utilized to improve access to and delivery of healthcare services to individuals who lack access. The outbreak of the pandemic accelerated the adoption of telehealth. So many people could not access healthcare facilities due to restrictions and the congestion experienced in many hospitals. Telehealth became the preferred option. However, care provided through the telehealth approach did not meet the projected standards. This was attributed to knowledge deficiency among providers regarding telehealth planning, preparing, delivering, and performance evaluation. There is, therefore, a need to integrate these aspects of telehealth into the nursing curriculum. The article was selected because it offers critical insight to nurses on the telehealth competencies to improve on to promote attainment of the projected telehealth benefits.
Blandford, A., Wesson, J., Amalberti, R., AlHazme, R., & Allwihan, R. (2020). Opportunities and challenges for telehealth within and beyond the pandemic. The Lancet Global Health, 8(11), e1364-e1365. https://doi.org/10.1016/s2214-109x(20)30362-4
The outbreak of the Covid pandemic has revolutionized everything. The restrictions on travel and the ease of transmission have led to the viruss rapid spread across the globe. In addition, due to hospital congestion and fear of visiting healthcare facilities with COVID 19 patients, access to care has declined. This article sought to enlighten the benefits of telehealth, especially during the pandemic. Telehealth is the provision of health services remotely while individuals manage their health under the guidance of a nurse or doctor. The doctor or nurse uses digital communications to monitor the patients progress. Telehealth has been effective in managing infectious diseases such as Covid 19 as it reduces the risk of spread. Therefore, it promotes the safety of the care providers, especially when there is a limited supply of personal protection resources. It has also promoted better care outcomes, especially in patients with mild conditions, because they are not exposed to other critically ill patients. To facilitate the implementation of telehealth, some hospitals have already introduced robots to monitor and facilitate communications between the patient-doctor.
However, successful implementation of telehealth does not only involve telephones. There is also a need to change the work process to accommodate telehealth and train providers on telehealth systems. This will instill confidence in the patients that the services offered through telehealth are effective. Hospitals should implement policies governing telehealth and install the best software and security installations to ensure data protection of the patients. Hospitals also need to streamline the telehealth process and ensure that patients are well managed and benefit fully from telehealth. In addition, telehealth must be affordable to ensure inclusivity. These strategies will improve the adoption of telehealth, thus paving the way for the realization of projected benefits. The article was selected because it guides healthcare stakeholders in understanding the strategies to improve the realization of the benefits of telehealth.
Rutledge, C. M., & Gustin, T. (2021). Preparing nurses for roles in telehealth: Now is the time. The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing, 26(1). https://doi.org/10.3912/OJIN.Vol26No01Man03
The pandemic rapidly increased the adoption of telehealth while nurses had little training on how to use telehealth to treat patients effectively. Telehealth has suddenly become a priority with the outbreak of the pandemic. The article seeks to provide insight into the role of telehealth in improving patient care and how to maximize these benefits. Nurses are the frontline healthcare providers. Therefore, they have taken an active role in the rapid implementation of telehealth during the pandemic. This initiative has significantly improved care access, especially amidst increasing hospital congestion. However, the major challenge has been inadequate telehealth literacy among nurses.
The national league of nursing had given little priority to telehealth before the pandemic. Therefore, nurse training on telehealth was not part of the curriculum. This indicates that Nurse educators and nursing education programs significantly influence the realization of the benefits of telehealth. They help ensure graduating nurses have adequate telehealth competencies. Nurses lack of telehealth skills has also impacted their attitude and perception of telehealth, which significantly influences change resistance. It is clear telehealth is very beneficial in care delivery. It helps monitor patients with conditions such as heart disease and those who lack adequate income to visit hospitals. It is also clear telehealth is not going anywhere. There is, therefore, a need to reduce barriers to benefit maximization. Healthcare organizations need to include nurse training on telehealth as part of the telehealth pre-implementation plan. The article was selected because it guides healthcare stakeholders in deriving maximum benefit from telehealth.

Solution
Critical Thinking and Evidence-Based Practice
Critical thinking refers to the skillful insight, analysis, synthesis, and assessment of information gathered through experience, observation, communication, and reflection that inform decisions. On the other hand, evidence-based practice (EBP) refers to the meticulous, explicit, and careful utilization of current best existing evidence to inform decisions about patient care and clinical decisions. EBP also entails the incorporation of clinical expertise, critical reasoning, understanding, judgment gained through professional training and experiences to inform clinical decisions (Dang & Dearholt, 2018). Taken together, critical thinking entails a process of problem solving and reasoning where all clinical decisions and judgments are anchored on evidence. This paper will discuss the application of critical thinking in nursing practice and how critical thinking and EBP relate to patient outcomes.
Critical Thinking in Nursing Practice and its Importance
Nursing practice is often challenging and complicated. Nurses always make life-changing decisions when caring for patients with intricate needs. They deal with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds with varying health care needs. They help patients and their families through emotional and stressful experiences and act as authority figures in demanding situations. Addressing these complex situations in nursing practice requires critical thinking to help in making accurate judgments and clinical decision making. According to Liu et al. (2021), critical thinking in nursing entails applying knowledge and experience to recognize patient issues and guide clinical judgments by opting for alternatives, assessing evidence, identifying clinical patterns, and using intuition. It also involves questioning, gathering, scrutiny, synthesis, interpretation, deduction, reasoning, application, creativity, and corroboration of data. The implementation of critical thinking skills in nursing also requires the development of methods and cognitive skills needed in a research investigation, problem-solving, and decision making (Ludin, 2018). In nursing research, critical thinking is applied in study analysis, justification of introduction and conclusion, differentiation of facts and opinions to evaluate the integrity of literature sources, and drawing valid conclusions.
Critical thinking plays essential role in nursing. Nurses are often required to make decisions about patient care and every decision made impacts the outcome of care. Consequently, critical thinking skills are essential in the decision-making process to ensure safe, skillful, and efficient nursing intervention that improves the quality of care (Ludin, 2018). Critical thinking also helps nurses to analyze the patients condition and the current treatment, identify changes in patient status, anticipate outcomes, and identify possible concerns. Moreover, critical thinking plays role in logical decision-making and innovative improvement.
The Role of Critical Thinking and Evidence-Based Practice in Patient Outcomes
Critical thinking is employed by nurses in the decision-making and problem-solving processes to improve patient outcomes. Critical thinking is a vital process for effective, safe, and skillful nursing interventions (Ludin, 2018). On the other hand, EBP improves patient outcomes by using the best and most current research to enhance the safety and health of patients while minimizing the overall costs of health care. It also enables nurses to review research to understand the risks or benefits of specific medical and nursing interventions (Dang & Dearholt, 2018). Critical thinking is essential for the knowledge, skills, and processes required in supporting EBP.
Conclusion
Critical thinking and EBP are essential in the provision of patient care. The need for critical thinking and EBP is necessitated by the challenging working environment for nurses characterized by making life-changing decisions, caring for patients with intricate needs, dealing with patients from culturally diverse backgrounds and health care needs, helping patients and their families through emotional and stressful experiences, and acting as an authority figure in demanding situations. Critical thinking is a fundamental element in the implementation of EBP.

Discussion: Foundational Neuroscience
Explain the agonist-to-antagonist spectrum of action of psychopharmacologic agents.
The spectrum of agonists to antagonists describes how substances, either occurring naturally (ligand) or synthetically such as psychopharmacologic agent, effect receptor sites (Stahl, 2008). The agonists are agents can increase an action on the receptor by mimicking a naturally occurring agent (Strange, 2008). An antagonist acts by blocking the receptor site to decrease the action of agents (Strange, 2008). Substances can also be partial agonists, which is an action that ranges between full agonist and full antagonist. Instead of increasing an action to the maximum level or blocking the action completely, it is an action that is somewhere in between the two levels (Strange, 2008). Many psychopharmacologic agents work by acting on G-protein-linked systems and ion-channel systems because these are triggered by neurotransmitters (Stahl, 2008).Nurs 6630 week (1-11) Discussion and Assignments.

Compare and contrast the actions of g couple proteins and ion gated channels.
G protein-coupled and ion-gated channels are both triggered by neurotransmitters (Stahl, 2008). G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) have seven transmembrane alpha helices (Strange, 2008). G proteins have three subunits (alpha, beta, and gamma). Ion-gated channels can be activated by electrical signals and neurotransmitters (Stahl, 2008). Ion-gated channels change the flow of ions, causing an almost-immediate effect and GPCRs take longer to work because they may make changes to cellular function over time (Stahl, 2008).
Explain the role of epigenetics in pharmacologic action.
Epigenetics is the study of gene expression, or which genes are turn off or on (Stahl, 2008). Pharmacologic actions can turn genes on or off to gain a desired effect. Epigenetic regulation of brain functions is important in the etiology of psychiatric disorders (Boks, et al., 2012). Epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation and histone acetylation, are affected by many pharmaceuticals, including psychiatric drugs (Boks, et al., 2012).
Explain how this information may impact the way you prescribe medications to clients. Include a specific example of a situation or case with a client in which the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner must be aware of the medications action.
Thorough knowledge of how medications work will allow the nurse practitioner to prescribe the best medication for the client. For example, knowing that many anxiolytics work on inotropic receptors and will work very quickly to calm a client in an acute situation rather than prescribing an antidepressant that works on GPCRs and will take much longer to help with an acute episode.Nurs 6630 week (1-11) Discussion and Assignments.
As a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, it is essential for you to have a strong background in foundational neuroscience. In order to diagnose and treat clients, you must not only understand the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders, but also how medications for these disorders impact the central nervous system. These concepts of foundational neuroscience can be challenging to understand. Therefore, this Discussion is designed to encourage you to think through these concepts, develop a rationale for your thinking, and deepen your understanding by interacting with your colleagues.

Assignment: Assessing and Treating Clients With Dementia
The Alzheimers Association defines dementia as a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life (Alzheimers Association, 2016). This term encompasses dozens of cognitive disorders of impaired memory formation, recall, and communication. The care and treatment of clients with dementia is dependent on multiple factors, including the stage of dementia, comorbidities, family support, and even the care setting. In your role, as the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, you must be prepared to not only treat clients with these various cognitive disorders, but also the multiple behavioral issues that often accompany them. For this Assignment, as you examine the client case study in this weeks Learning Resources, consider how you might assess and treat clients presenting with dementia.Nurs 6630 week (1-11) Discussion and Assignments.

BACKGROUND
Mr. Akkad is a 76 year old Iranian male who is brought to your office by his eldest son for strange behavior. Mr. Akkad was seen by his family physician who ruled out any organic basis for Mr. Akkads behavior. All laboratory and diagnostic imaging tests (including CT-scan of the head) were normal.
According to his son, he has been demonstrating some strange thoughts and behaviors for the past two years, but things seem to be getting worse. Per the clients son, the family noticed that Mr. Akkads personality began to change a few years ago. He began to lose interest in religious activities with the family and became more critical of everyone. They also noticed that things he used to take seriously had become a source of amusement and ridicule.
Over the course of the past two years, the family has noticed that Mr. Akkad has been forgetting things. His son also reports that sometimes he has difficult finding the right words in a conversation and then will shift to an entirely different line of conversation.
SUBJECTIVE
During the clinical interview, Mr. Akkad is pleasant, cooperative and seems to enjoy speaking with you. You notice some confabulation during various aspects of memory testing, so the PMHNP performs a Mini-Mental State Exam. Mr. Akkad scores 18 out of 30 with primary deficits in orientation, registration, attention & calculation, and recall. The score suggests moderate dementia.Nurs 6630 week (1-11) Discussion and Assignments.
MENTAL STATUS EXAM
Mr. Akkad is 76 year old Iranian male who is cooperative with todays clinical interview. His eye contact is poor. Speech is clear, coherent, but tangential at times. He makes no unusual motor movements and demonstrates no tic. Self-reported mood is euthymic. Affect however is restricted. He denies visual or auditory hallucinations. No delusional or paranoid thought processes noted. He is alert and oriented to person, partially oriented to place, but is disoriented to time and event [he reports that he thought he was coming to lunch but wound up here- referring to your office, at which point he begins to laugh]. Insight and judgment are impaired. Impulse control is also impaired as evidenced by Mr. Akkads standing up during the clinical interview and walking towards the door. When the PMHNP asked where he was going, he stated that he did not know. Mr. Akkad denies suicidal or homicidal ideation.

When pediatric clients present with mood disorders, the process of assessing, diagnosing, and treating them can be quite complex. Children not only present with different signs and symptoms than adult clients with the same disorders, but they also metabolize medications much differently. As a result, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners must exercise caution when prescribing psychotropic medications to these clients. SAMPLE DECISION TREE ASSIGNMENT
An Elderly Iranian Man with Alzheimers
Alzheimers condition is a neurodegenerative disease that begins slowly and worsens over a long period of time. The condition has been associated with almost 70% of all dementia cases in the world. The most prevalent early symptoms entail the absence of memory concerning recent events. As the condition progresses, other symptoms such as language difficulties, mood swings, disorientation, behavioral issues, lack of self-care management, and disorientation may occur (Houmani et al., 2018). In a gradual manner, all the bodily functions will be lost resulting in eventual death. As much as the diseases life expectancy varies, the typical expectancy does not go beyond nine years after diagnosis. Importantly, the disease does not have a cure but it could be managed to ensure that the quality of life of patients suffering from it is improved.Nurs 6630 week (1-11) Discussion and Assignments.
The case study for the present assignment entails the examination and treatment of an elderly Iranian man who displays strange behaviors according to his son. Mr. Akan has lost interest in things that erstwhile interested him. Further, the client has been forgetting things and his subjective test revealed confabulation during mental health testing process. Mr. Akad also has restricted affect and impaired impulse and judgment. A mini-mental state examination reveals that Mr. Akad suffers from major neurocognitive disorder caused by presumptive Alzheimers disease. This paper describes the assessment outcomes and treatment options for an elderly Iranian man, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimers. The condition can be treated with pharmacological interventions, which are dependent on among other factors dosage, proper selection of drug, and time of use, and administration route.
