Real-world Application of Health Policy Advocacy
The advance practice nurse is preparing to examine the economic, financial, and political factors that influence the delivery of healthcare and policy reform. There is a need to develop strategies to influence, implement and evaluate current policy. This presentation will examine a health policy and its influence on a patient population. Choose a health policy to evaluate for this presentation and answer the following questions: Critically analyze and related issues surrounding the policy from the perspective of consumers, nursing, other health professions, and other stakeholders in policy and public forums. What is the role of nursing leadership in the development and implementation of institutional, local, state, federal, and/or international health policy? What is the impact of nursing influence on policy makers through their active participation on committees, boards, or task forces at the institutional, local, state, regional, national, and/or international levels to improve health care delivery and outcomes? What are some ways that you can do to educate others, including policy makers at all levels, regarding nursing, health policy, and patient care outcomes? Analyze the advocacy process for the nursing profession within the policy and healthcare communities that relate to your selected policy. Explain nursing responsibility to develop, evaluate, and provide leadership for health care policy that shapes health care financing, regulation, and delivery. Identify the connection between health outcomes and advocacy for social justice, equity, and ethical policies within all healthcare arenas for your selected policy. This PowerPoint® (Microsoft Office) or Impress® (Open Office) presentation should be a minimum of 20 slides, including a title and reference slide, with detailed speaker notes on content slides and recorded audio. Use at least four scholarly sources

XAP1 XAP TASK 1
There are many sources of information available on the web and in journals relating to the nursing discipline. Therefore, it is of pivotal importance to understand the basic tenets of critical appraisal of research for its use in interprofessional healthcare practices. The aim of evidence-based practice (EBP) is to employ a three-pronged approach, blending the best available research evidence, patient values and preferences, and clinical expertise. In this task, you will critique two primary research evidence sources. You will select one quantitative and one qualitative peer-reviewed journal article on a healthcare topic of interest. REQUIREMENTS Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. An originality report is provided when you submit your task that can be used as a guide. You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course. Note: Research evidence must not be more than five years old. Note: Upload a copy of the full text of the articles with your submission. Note: You may use the same topic and research articles on both Task 1: Analyzing Research Articles and Task 2: Evidence-Based Practice Change. A. Evaluate a primary, quantitative research, peer-reviewed journal article (suggested length of 35 pages) that has healthcare implications by doing the following: Note: You may select an article focusing on a healthcare topic of your choice or an article focusing on one of the following topics: falls and fall prevention, pain management in children, opioid abuse, hepatitis C, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, or hand hygiene and infections in hospitals. 1. Describe how the researcher addresses the following four areas in the selected journal article: background or introduction (e.g., the purpose of the study) review of the literature (e.g., research used to support the study) data analysis (e.g., how the researcher analyzed the data) methodology (e.g., research type and sampling methods) 2. Evaluate whether the evidence presented in each of the four areas of the journal article from part A1 supports the outcome of the study and implications for future research. 3. Explain how the protection of human subjects and cultural considerations were addressed by the researcher, using specific information from the journal article from part A. 4. Describe one strength and one limitation of the study. 5. Describe how the evidence from the article in part A informs current nursing practices. B. Evaluate a primary, qualitative research, peer-reviewed journal article (suggested length of 35 pages) that has healthcare implications by doing the following: Note: You may select an article focusing on a healthcare topic of your choice or an article focusing on one of the following topics: falls and fall prevention, pain management in children, opioid abuse, hepatitis C, catheter associated urinary tract infections, or hand hygiene and infections in hospitals. You may use the same topic that was used in part A. Evaluate whether the evidence presented in each of the four areas of the journal article from part B1 supports the outcome of the study and implications for future research. 3. Explain how the protection of human subjects and cultural considerations were addressed by the researcher, using specific information from the journal article from part B. 4. Identify one strength and one limitation of the study. 5. Describe how the evidence from the article in part B informs current nursing practices. C. Acknowledge sources, using APA-formatted in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized. D. Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.

The RN to BSN program at Grand Canyon University meets the requirements for clinical competencies as defined by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), using nontraditional experiences for practicing nurses. These experiences come in the form of direct and indirect care experiences in which licensed nursing students engage in learning within the context of their hospital organization, specific care discipline, and local communities. This assignment consists of both an interview and a PowerPoint (PPT) presentation. Assessment/Interview Select a community of interest in your region. Perform a physical assessment of the community. Perform a direct assessment of a community of interest using the “Functional Health Patterns Community Assessment Guide.” Interview a community health and public health provider regarding that person’s role and experiences within the community. Interview Guidelines Interviews can take place in-person, by phone, or by Skype. Develop interview questions to gather information about the role of the provider in the community and the health issues faced by the chosen community. Complete the “Provider Interview Acknowledgement Form” prior to conducting the interview. Submit this document separately in its respective drop box. Compile key findings from the interview, including the interview questions used, and submit these with the presentation. PowerPoint Presentation Create a PowerPoint presentation of 15-20 slides (slide count does not include title and references slide) describing the chosen community interest. Include the following in your presentation: Description of community and community boundaries: the people and the geographic, geopolitical, financial, educational level; ethnic and phenomenological features of the community, as well as types of social interactions; common goals and interests; and barriers, and challenges, including any identified social determinates of health. Summary of community assessment: (a) funding sources and (b) partnerships. Summary of interview with community health/public health provider. Identification of an issue that is lacking or an opportunity for health promotion. A conclusion summarizing your key findings and a discussion of your impressions of the general health of the community. While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA format ting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. Confidence Interval Concepts
Initial Post Instructions Find an example of a confidence interval in the news, scholarly source or medical journal. Summarize the article/study. Does the article/study include the sample size and the level of confidence used to create the confidence interval? Explain what the confidence interval means in context of the news article or scholarly source. Professor post: What is a confidence interval? A confidence interval is a range around a measurement that conveys how precise the measurement is. For most chronic disease and injury programs, the measurement in question is a proportion or a rate (the percent of New Yorkers who exercise regularly or the lung cancer incidence rate). Confidence intervals are often seen on the news when the results of polls are released. This is an example from the Associated Press in October 1996: The latest ABC News-Washington Post poll showed 56 percent favored Clinton while 39 percent would vote for Dole. The ABC News-Washington Post telephone poll of 1,014 adults was conducted March 8-10 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. (Emphasis added). Although it is not stated, the margin of error presented here was probably the 95 percent confidence interval. In the simplest terms, this means that there is a 95 percent chance that between 35.5 percent and 42.5 percent of voters would vote for Bob Dole (39 percent plus or minus 3.5 percent). Conversely, there is a 5 percent chance that fewer than 35.5 percent of voters or more than 42.5 percent of voters would vote for Bob Dole. The precise statistical definition of the 95 percent confidence interval is that if the telephone poll were conducted 100 times, 95 times the percent of respondents favoring Bob Dole would be within the calculated confidence intervals and five times the percent favoring Dole would be either higher or lower than the range of the confidence intervals.
