An annotated bibliography builds on a basic bibliography and takes it to
the next level. More than a list of sources one has used for researching a
topic it includes additional information about each source along with a summary
statement. An annotated bibliography is a scholarly work and should provide the
reader insight into what you learned from each peer reviewed article, an
evaluation of the usefulness of the resource, and the extent to which it
contributed to new learning. Writing an annotated bibliography is an
opportunity to analyze and synthesize the peer review literature concerning the
material and social determinants of health, vulnerable populations, and health
disparities. When this is complete, you should have sufficient knowledge of a specific
health disparity to address them in the culminating paper.
To prepare for this activity please complete all required readings and
viewing before continuing and access the recommended resources on health
disparities. These will be helpful to you in identifying a disparity on which
to focus your paper.
The annotated bibliography is the first part of the culminating paper,
which focuses on vulnerable populations and health disparities. You will
conduct a review of the literature to identify peer-reviewed articles that
address the disparity. It is important to a have a range of articles that
describe the disparity, the antecedents to the disparity, explain the
population-based impact of the disparity, and identify what has been done to
alleviate the disparity (successful programs as well as those that may not be
successful).
This assignment is 10 one-half pages of annotated bibliographies for the
scholarly works* you have selected (excluding title page) and accounts for 15%
of your course grade.

Interpretation of Right to Health
According to my interpretation, every individual is entitled to the highest health standards without any discrimination. The right to health was declared by World Health Organization in 1946. Every individual has the freedom to enjoy health and decide how they would like to be treated without being forced to consent to any medical intervention they do not acknowledge. They also have access to health education, a clean environment, food, feel safe at work and home. Therefore, governments must ensure that right to health is maintained globally. This study discusses the impacts of the virus on policies of women’s sexual and reproductive health rights, policies implemented by other countries regarding the Zika virus, and threats of the Zika virus.
Impacts of a virus on women’s sexual reproductive health policies
The introduction of viruses has impacted women’s sexual reproductive health policies in various ways. For instance, the Zika outbreak has led to inadequate access to contraceptives such as condoms, thus increasing infections in vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and their unborn babies. For instance, in Brazil, the virus outbreak showed an increase in those using contraceptives due to fear of the virus. The introduction also reduces the economic status, thus making it impossible to provide women with the health care services they require, such as family planning to help them plan the number of babies they would like to have (Brown et al., 2019).
Implemented policies on Zika virus
Zika virus was first discovered in Uganda as an infection caused by a mosquito and is currently most prevalent in many countries. Based on the higher prevalence rates, those countries affected have implemented policies to reduce transmission rates. The policies are; the use of contraceptives such as a condom for women and their partners (World Health Organization, 2020).
Those planning to conceive should seek counseling for further educational awareness of the virus. Pregnant women should use condoms correctly to prevent their unborn babies from contracting the virus (World Health Organization, 2020).
Violation of woman’s right to health
Zika virus can also be transmitted from mother to fetus. Therefore, it violates the women’s right to safe delivery. Pregnant mothers infected with the Zika virus are at a higher risk of having pregnancy complications such as miscarriage and preterm birth. This can also lead to maternal mortality, especially in those countries with low health care services.
Severity of Zika
The global public health threat of Zika has reduced some sexual and reproductive health rights and freedom, especially in most affected countries. For instance, the Zika virus in Brazil led to unplanned pregnancies due to inaccessibility to reproductive health (Lima& Iriart, 2021). The severity of the virus also led to an increase in sexual violence that deprived the women freedom of making their own decisions due to lack of health education.
Possibilities of changing existing laws and policies
Based on the health threats posed by the virus, it is possible that at some point, it will lead to changes of existing restrictive laws and policies that govern sexual reproductive health rights. This will also lead to increased maternal mortality and morbidity rates and a decrease in healthcare services due to financial instability.

More than half of the world’s population live in low- and middle-income countries, more than 80% of these suffer from mental disorders (Rathod et al., 2017). According to Rathod et al. (2017), individuals in the lowest socioeconomic status are eight times more likely to develop schizophrenia; additionally, 95% of employers in Poland said they would not hire someone with schizophrenia. This fact alone drastically reduces the chance and support that lower-income individuals must find and maintain meaningful income-generating employment, feeding into the negative cycle and possible complicating mental health issues.
Lund et al. (2011) state that the social causation hypothesis supports poverty increasing the risk of mental illness through varied heightened external stressors like social exclusion, reduced social capital, malnutrition, violence, and trauma. Additionally, according to the social drift hypothesis, those with mental illness are at increased risk of going into and remaining in poverty (Lund et al., 2011). The two pathways discussed appear to cause a negative cycle for those in poverty who have mental health issues or mental disorders. As poverty increases the risk of mental illness, it further decreases productivity, increases social stigma, and causes possible loss of employment and income. Besides relying on government funding and donors for services, addressing this issue can be alleviated by creating national mental health policies that outline mental health priorities and services. According to Merson et al. (2020), lower- and middle-income countries are less likely to have these types of policies in place. The WHO Mental Health Policy and Service Guidance Package of 2000-2005 provides a series of policy development and service planning for mental health policies (Merson et al., 2020).
Mental health consists of a person’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being and can change through every life stage (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021). Mental illnesses can come and go through varying points in an individual’s life and are diagnosable disorders that affect an individual’s thoughts and actions (CDC, 2021). Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) can be described as use of medicines and health practices that are not used in conventional western medicine. Complementary medicine is a non-mainstream approach, used in addition to standard treatments. Alternative medicine is a non-mainstream approach used instead of standard treatments.

Integrative Medicine
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine also distinguishes a term -integrative medicine which describes an approach to medical care that combines standard medicine with CAM practices that are effective and safe to use.
Who Use CAM?
NIH (2021) reports that according to a survey conducted in 2012 as many as 30 percent of adults and 12 percent of children use CAM. Another study, by Fjær et al. (2020) published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, reveals that females, more than men, were found to report greater use of CAM. Prevalence was also found to be the highest among the age group 45–64, among those with higher education, and among those living comfortably on their income. Moreover, people in paid work were found to report greater CAM use than the unemployed and retired, while the permanently sick or disabled were found to report CAM use more than all other main activity groups.
