We Were Soldiers

For your Midterm, you are going to choose one of your favorite movies to watch again for the upteenth time, but THIS time, you are going to watch it with a critical/analytical eye.  Ideally, you own your favorite movie! Your Midterm project will be to write a 2-3 page paper about your favorite film with an eye to the mechanics.  You will answer all the questions below in your paper.  TITLE your paper with the name of your film.  12 pt. font (NOT CALIBRI) and SINGLE or NORMAL spacing. (I know, I know, I’m literally the only professor who wants it this way.) You can break your paper into bullet points like the ones below in order to give your paper some structure, or you can write it essay style.  Worth 120 points.   THIS SHOULD BE FUN!  You are talking about your favorite movie – so enjoy the process! Watch your favorite movie ( I know you probably have more than one, just pick one you want to see again.  It must be a feature film – NOT a TV show and NOT an animated film) Start with a short paragraph of WHY it is one of your favorites.  How does it make you feel?   Look for STORYTELLING – Who is the protagonist?  What is their objective?   What are their obstacles?  If you had to break this film down into three sections:  Beginning, Middle, and End – what would be the three sentences you would use to tell me what is going on? How did they use SHOW, DON’T TELL in this film?  What was particularly brilliant storytelling using visual cues? Remember, this is NOT about the acting; “Show, don’t tell” is when the camera moves to show YOU, the audience, something that clues you into something significant.  For example, the very end of Citizen Kane has a brilliant moment of “show, don’t tell” by the last image of the film, which is a close up of the sled burning in the fire…and we finally see “Rosebud”.  There is no acting involved here…it’s ALL camera work.  What 2 brilliant moments of ACTING did you see in this film?  How so?  What do you think made it brilliant? (Think about emotional availability, movements, gestures, vocal inflection…) How did the actor bring the character to life?  What made them believable? How did they use CINEMATOGRAPHY to tell this story?  Choose 3 different shots from the shot list that you learned last week and choose moments in the movie where you can name the shot used (establishing, close up, pan, dolly, etc.) and why they chose that one.  How was the story better because of that choice? What about DESIGN? There are five aspects of design:   Costume: Choose a character – what does the costume design tell you about this character?  Think about choice of color, texture of the material, extra bling. Choose 2 outfits and talk about why that choice of costume was perfect for the character.  Props: Choose one thing an actor picked up and handled that told you something about their character?  How did they treat it? Set: Where was this film set?  Do you think it was “on location” or they had a Green screen?  What makes you think so?  What did the set tell you about the world the characters live in?  Choose a setting that was perfect – notice a particular detail about the set that you never saw before.  How did noticing that add to the story? Sound:  What sort of music was in this film?  Think about the instrumentation that you hear.  How did it make you feel when the movie started?  Was there ever utter silence?  How did the music help tell the story? Talk about a moment where you heard music.   What about the choice of songs throughout the film?  Why did they choose that song?  Music, lyrics…both?  What about the sound effects?   Lights: Think about the section on lighting, and how it is so important to film.  When were there moments of backlight, low light, deep color saturation, washed out colors…how did that make you feel while watching it?  Choose 2 moments from the film where you are now really aware of why they made the choice of lighting that they did.   Overall  Opinion:  What have you learned from doing this analysis?  Do you appreciate this film even more? Why or why not?  Why should other people watch this film?

The Made-for-TV Movie

find and watch a made for tv movie from the 80s or 70s. What movie did you choose? In what year was it shown? Why did you pick this one? Be honest. If it was suggested to you, great. If you picked the first one you could find, that’s ok too. Just fess up and be real about it. All production techniques aside, (unless they were important, innovative, and landmark within themselves), how did your choice make it’s mark on television? Again, be honest. If it’s still a classic today, there has to be a reason. Find and state those reasons in your response. Or if critics have labeled it formulaic, etc., say that too. Why did/do TV expects feel that way about this particular tv movie? HOWEVER, before any responses are posted, be sure to have done your RESEARCH!! If you get all “judge-y”, and clearly show that you didn’t bother to find out about a film that very definitely changed the game, then it will be reflected in your grade. And as a reminder, NO WIKIPEDIA, NO ROTTEN TOMATOES, NO IMDB!! As is continuously said in class, you can’t use your “2020 filter” to remark and respond to television of the past, unless it’s to show the history, and changes in the industry, culture, and society. While no “word count” will be given, make sure your answers cover the subject, give credit to the research, and reflect the ideas and concepts we’ve already discussed and unpacked during class. Also use your notes from class and the CNN documentaries to help you enhance your points about television during the decade that your chosen movie was made and released. And finally, after you post, take the time to read what others have written. If someone else watched and has posted about the same movie you chose, then add to their observations, and be thoughtful and respectful of the reviews – even if you disagree.

Antwon Fisher Video Reflection

Watch one of the following movies: “The Color Purple, ” “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Million Dollar Baby,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Antwone Fisher,” “Seabiscuit” “Good Will Hunting,” “Born on the 4th of July,” “Philadelphia,” Something about Amelia,” “Rudy,” Ordinary People,” The Burning Bed,” “Call Me Anna,” Message in a Bottle,” “Hidden Figures (2016),” “Green Book (2018)” or “One Flew Over the Coo Coo’s Nest.” and write a paper in which you complete a clear and concise biopsychosocial assessment that analyzes behaviors, struggles and growth/development. Use 2 different theoretical approaches learned in this course to understand and analyze one of the movie’s central character’s behavior and biopsychosocial-spiritual development. Please include at least 5 relevant citations from the literature. (see below for the format) Regardless of the option you choose for this assignment, the purpose is for you to demonstrate your understanding and ability to apply traditional theories in the assessment of an individual client system or character. The term biopsychosocial-spiritual assessment is another way of stating that a comprehensive assessment includes multiple perspectives that are brought together in order to fully understand the client and the context in which he/she is living. The biological includes the important physical factors that must be taken into consideration in understanding the client. For example, an adolescent boy who is very small for his age may be the target of harassment; the person who was in a car accident that results in him/her being a quadriplegic; the alcoholic client who has a genetic predisposition to alcohol as you look at their family history; or the parents who are struggling with the fact that their child died of a disease that was passed on genetically. (Clearly the biological aspect of assessment is an area that we have spent less time discussing and is not integral to the material presented in the book. Therefore, the biological aspect of the “focal system” needs to be addressed, but at a much more superficial level than will be expected in the following two sections.) The psychological includes the intra-personal functioning of the individual and draws heavily on the theories of individual development as discussed in class and readings. The impact of the family on intra-personal development should also be considered here, as well as the roles that the individual plays within the family. The social includes the context in which the individual is embedded, including how this context responds to the characteristics of the individual and the supports and resources provided. This would include family as the context for daily living, along with the demands placed on the individual by the environment. The spiritual includes our highest aspirations and potentials as human beings. How we express our need for love, meaning, creativity, community, higher power, religion, and the universe. Finally, the task is to put these all together and to think about how you can use the material studied in this course to better understand the character in the movie or the client with whom you have been working. This includes understanding not only the problems they are confronting, but also the resources they have to cope with these demand For this assignment please use the following format: Introduction: describe the character or client that you selected and specifically describe the character’s or client’s significant identifying factors (age, race/culture, gender, family experience, and other personal background information Describe the character/client’s significant biopsychosocial issues, milestones, life cycle issues, strengths, life experiences, struggles, experiences of oppression, cultural issues, and developmental issues. Describe each of the theoretical approaches selected. Include key concepts and why you selected these theories. Critically analyze how the character’s/client’s strengths, struggles, issue, and/or growth/developmental issues would be viewed and explained through each of the selected theoretical perspectives. Clearly describe how these theoretical perspectives are similar or different. Integrate relevant citations from the human behavior research literature Specifically describe what you have learned about human behavior from this analysis Important Note: All written assignments must be typed and follow APA format, 8-10 pages, this does not include title page, abstract page, or reference page. Several resources will be posted in the learning modules. Also you can also refer to the APA Publication Manual (6th edition), and to a tutorial on APA style at:
