Nicholas Braswell Strong Roots Scholarship

Criminal Defense attorney Nicholas Braswell has devoted his career to serving and defending the citizens of the Richmond area and has developed a strong connection with the people and places of eastern Virginia. It takes a unique type of individual to nurture a love of place and to put down strong, healthy roots within a community. In today’s world, there are so many opportunities to live a transient life, to move from place to place and never settle down. However, we all need to feel like part of a community, and so it falls upon certain special people and projects to build that sense of unity and place that we call “home.” As day-to-day life becomes increasingly digital and experiences become increasingly “remote,” discussion about what it takes to build healthy communities becomes more and more important. Nicholas Braswell is proud to sponsor the Strong Roots Scholarship and Essay Contest as a way to promote discussion about the meaning of community in the digital age and as a way to sponsor educational opportunities for individuals who are dedicated to building strong communities where passions and careers can take root. Write a 500-600 word essay that answers the following question: How is the meaning of the word “community” changing in today’s world, and what does that mean for people who wish to build strong, healthy communities?

Literature as an Art

Directions: You will write a literary analysis paper in which you create an argument about a literary work or works, or an author or authors contributions and influences. You can explore some or all of the following in-depth: an author’s life, works, themes, symbols, characters, etc. You may also compare/contrast two works, or two different forms of one work (book vs. movie version). Some argue that a certain author or genre should be taught in K-12. The most important thing to remember is that you will be making an argument. This is not a book report. As quoted from Purdue: “Literature is an art form, and as such, it is meant to move, inspire or even outrage its readers. If you have a lot of options, choose something that appeals to you, even if you cannot justify your choice.”Your research paper will allow you to delve into a topic related to literature in a more comprehensive manner than your previous essays. You will conduct research to help you present your information and argument. Grading rubric: This will be the same rubric I have used for your other essays, but you will multiply the total in each row by 3, for a total of 225.Content:1. Your paper will need to be 8-10 double-spaced pages, in 12 point font. It must reach the bottom of the 8th page, not counting the header or title or Works Cited page. *If you are struggling to meet the page count, email me; I can help you! 2. Your paper will need to include the basic elements of an essay (introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion that connects to a current issue or relevant idea. It needs to be specific).3. You will need to use at least five sources from the Library (this will be in your AB). You can use additional sources from the Library, and one outside source. *Even if you do not quote a source in your paper, you should still include it in your “Works Cited and Consulted” page.4. You will need to develop and present a thesis/ argument.
