Healthcare as a Right or Privilege

Because good writing is always a process, our persuasive essay will be written in two parts: a first draft due this week and a final draft due in week 6. Your paper should be 3-4 pages in length. As you prepare, here are a few reminders for this week’s draft: In week 3 you posted a thesis for peer review. Use the revised thesis, based on your classmates’ and teacher’s feedback as the basis for your persuasive paper. Use your sources to support your thesis. Research and prepare the passages you will consider using. Remember to review methods of paraphrasing, summarizing, and using direct quotations. Prepare the body paragraphs by deciding where to place supporting information. Remember, each paragraph of the paper should act to build the momentum of the argument. Apply pathos, logos, and ethos whenever possible.

Media Response

Media Response Essay: In a 1000 word essay, respond to a piece of media assigned for the class. Make sure to include your own response to the work, as well as situating it in its historical context. What is the piece trying to say or do? How effective is it, and why? How does it fit into the historical period in which it was created? Your essay can ask questions like these.   Artist Research Essay: Research a new media artist and, in a 1000 essay, describe them and their work. Most likely, this will involve choosing a few of their works and analyzing them in the context of the artist. Be sure to also attend to the time period they are working in- no artist works outside of history!   Media Technology Essay: Think of a media technology that interests you. In a 1000 word essay, write a personal reflection on that media technology. More than simply a description of the technology, I’m looking for a deep analysis of how this technology has impacted your life and relation of that to the new media art that we analyze in class. New Media Art Piece: Using a new media technology (we can be very flexible on what this means, but it includes things like Twine, Processing, Photoshop, etc.) create an art piece that takes no more than 3 minutes to experience that comments on, analyzes, or critiques, the medium that you have used to make it. For example, you might create an image using Photoshop that comments on Photoshop as a medium.

Convince a Hiring Manager

In 700-1,100 words, Convince a hiring manager in your future field that your choice of areas of study (The increasing amount of suicide within military ranks) has prepared you well for your proposed future career.  You may use first person but not second person. Your grammar, spelling, and punctuation should be flawless. As per college writing best practice, your essay should be thesis driven, and each body paragraph should ideally be centered around a specific area of study. Include introduction and conclusion paragraphs.  Develop your main points using specific examples of particular classes, information, and skills you learned that will contribute to your career field.  If you are not pursuing a job, graduate program, or promotion after you graduate (retiring, stay-at-home-parent, graduate school, etc.), convince an audience of your choice how what you have learned will be relevant to your next stage in life.  Use APA formatting and a title page, but no abstract page is required. Additional Suggestions: You should not explain your personal history or the story of how you chose your areas of study. Focus on how your areas of study connect to your future in this field.  You need to justify all areas of study in your degree, but you can use as many paragraphs or sub-points as you like for each. Remember you will succeed if you convince your audience that your areas of study will prepare you well for what comes next, but you are not trying to convince them that they should hire you. Focus on the smaller, simpler question.   Reliable sources, while not required, will make your argument more trustworthy. To begin brainstorming, you can ask yourself, “What relevant skills, knowledge, or experiences did I acquire in earning the credits for each of my areas of study?”  Note that even if you transferred in credit or received PLA credit for life experiences, you can still use skills learned through those to justify your decisions. For many INDS students, their areas of study are a series of choices over the course of several years as they learn of new areas of interest and their career plans evolve; be honest but remember that it is up to you to explain why your skills are relevant to your field, not why you chose them.
