Use the musical examples and the articles to respond to the following prompts: How are the lied and the melodie similar? How are they different? Which came first? Two specific composers are mentioned in regard to developing this type of song; one German, and one French. Who are these two composers and how did their contributions to lied/melodie help to popularize the genre? In general, what do you think about the songs presented here? Does the combination of voice and piano reflect the poetry in each different song? In your opinion, does the piano accompaniment serve as a partner to the voice, or does it take a background position? Which seems more important to you in the delivery of the emotion the poetry describes; the piano or the voice? Or do both sounds provide an equal contribution to describing the poetic emotions? Erlkonig, Le spectre de la rose, and Sur les lagunes all speak of death. Describe your impression of each song. How do you feel that the representations of death are similar and/or different? Do any of these songs give you a positive feeling? Describe your feelings toward the Brahms Wiegenlied. What do you hear in the piano and voice parts? Have you heard this song before? Where and when? Which of these songs was your favorite? Why? What makes you like or dislike this music?

Analysis Of Rhetorical Situation
Assignment Instructions The purpose of this assignment is to try to help you to see writing as it isan important means of communication. To accomplish this, please analyze your research topic more fully by identifying your thesis statement and carefully considering your rhetorical situation. Remember: your challenge in the research paper is to communicate your purpose clearly to your reader. Place your thesis statement at the top of the page, below the required heading, and answer the questions shown in the box below. Be sure that the questions are copied to your assignment; each question should be followed by a one to two paragraph answer. The purpose of this assignment is to help direct your research and organize your thinking on the topic. Remember that your thesis statement should be a single, complete sentence that is NOT a question. Write your thesis statement here (one complete sentence that is not a question): Write paragraphs that respond to the questions below: What research question(s) led me to this thesis statement? What is my purpose in writing this paper? What do I already know about my topic? What are my feelings toward this topic? What do my readers already know? What are my readers feelings toward the topic? What do my readers need to know to understand my point? What information do I need to research and add to my paper? Begin by looking at the research question(s) which triggered this thesis statement. Then explain your purpose (and passing the course is not the purpose here). Your thesis statement is a good place to start, but you need to go a bit further. Are you trying to inform, entertain, persuade, or do something else? Consider the audience take-awaywhat do you want your readers to know, feel, or believe when they finish reading your research paper? A clear understanding of your purpose will help you decide what information to include in your paper and how to organize your paper. Next, consider your audience; in this case, your audience is your classmates. Consider how much they know about your topic and what they need to know to understand your purpose. Will you need to explain complex terminology? Will graphs help your audience? If your topic is a controversial one, think about the best way to present it to your audience. For example, think about your tone and word choice here. Once you have an understanding of your purpose and audience, consider your subject. How much information do you already know about the topic? What information do you need to research and present to your audience in order to fulfill your purpose? Careful consideration here will help direct your research.

Unit 1B’s introduction to the Five Great Themes of World Literature states with regard to the hero: “The surest way to understand what a culture of the past most values is to focus on what it considers heroic, in that a culture recognizes its heroes as embodying its most important ideas, the values that are essential.” Discuss the diverse values that our two epic heroes, Rustem and Dante, embody. Which values embodied by these epic heroes are endorsed or celebrated by their societies? Are any of their values condemned or rejected by their societies? Illustrate your discussion with specific examples of the heroes’ obligations to their societies and what their values reflect about their cultures. 2. Although two very different literary works, both the Shahnameh and Inferno deal centrally with the existence of human suffering and mortality. Discuss how the two deal with such issues as what causes human suffering; what seems inevitably tragic about human existence; how one should deal with suffering; what one should learn from an understanding of human mortality. From the Shahnameh your essay will probably focus on Rustem, Sohrab, and/or Saiawush; for Dante, you have many options, but the following characters and their sad stories make especially good choices for the subject (but you can choose others if you wish; just one will do): Virgil, Francesca, Pier della Vigna, Brunetto Latini, Guido de Montefeltro. The reading material from Dante’s Inferno can be found at this link: http://www.online-literature.com/dante/inferno/ please read these cantos for the assignment: Cantos I-IX (Beginning and Sins of Incontinence); XII, XIII, XV (Sins of Violence); XXVI, XXVII, XXXI-XXXIV (Sins of Fraud and Treachery).
