Mood In Literature

Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a successful protest novel against slavery because it relied on melodrama and sentimentality – in other words, it made an emotional appeal to its readers. How does slam poetry use emotion to deliver its message? What is effective about this tool? What is ineffective about it?  Give specific examples to illustrate your arguments.250-300 words

Character’s Ethics

Pick one character from any of the three short stories we have read so far.  Be sure to follow the guidelines for a proper character analysis.  The paper should be two pages (typed) in MLA format.  Points are taken off for MLA format.  Refer to the text or the Purdue Owl website if you need a refresher. Guidelines: 1) Pay attention to the character’s ethics. Does the character make just or unjust choices? 2) Decide whether the character’s actions are wise or unwise. 3) What is the character’s motivation? As you are mulling over the pros and cons of each character’s internal thoughts and external actions, you will want to also consider why the character is acting or thinking in a particular way. Has the author given you any clues about the character’s past? 4) Consider the effects of the character’s behavior on other characters. 5) Look for repeatedly used words that describe the character. Those words often give insight into a character’s psychology and motivations. 6) Be aware of items associated with the character. They may say something about his or her state of mind. 7) Read between the lines. Often what a character does not say is as important as what he or she does say. 8) Is the character “flat” or “round”? A character is considered flat (or static) when he or she does not experience change of any kind, does not grow from beginning to end.  Round characters are those who do experience some sort of growth. 9) Consider the historical time period of the character. Refrain from making modern judgments about the past; put the character’s actions and thoughts in context. 10) Finally, what does the author think? Look for any of the author’s own judgments about the characters he or she has created. The author may be directing you toward an intended interpretation.

Understanding Tone When Reading

For this second essay, I want you to choose one of the stories listed and identify a theme within that story, some message you feel the writer is trying to convey. How does the writer go about developing this theme? Is that argument still relevant today? Since creative writers are very specific in their word choice and order, you will want to take a look at their word choice and use of language strategies so that you can discuss how these elements influence the reading of the poem you’ve chosen to analyze. You will also need to take a look at the characters used in the story and the purposes they serve in helping to develop the overall theme you see. You need to make sure to cover these categories in your essay for this assignment: Literary Criticism: The literary criticisms (found on pages 1332-1355) can be used to go deeper into the analysis of a piece of writing. I want you to limit yourselves to these criticisms: Feminist Criticism, Marxist Criticism, or Psychoanalytic Criticism. You need to choose only one, and bring in examples from the story to help illustrate your points about how this lens can be used to find meaning within that story. It should be clear to me, the reader, which lens you are using.  Character Analysis: You will want to take a look at one or more of the characters in the story and connect them to the overall theme you are writing about. How is this character developed? How do they help to develop the theme? Style, Tone, and Language Analysis: Take a look at the language used by the writer. Make note of creative word choices or sentence structure. Does this add to the understanding of the writing? You may want to take a look at the tone the author uses. How does the tone affect the reading of the story and the delivery of the theme? What other language strategies does the writer use? Are these strategies effective in helping to develop the theme? In what ways? You will need to bring in a minimum of five sources to help you explore a theme of your chosen story. Again, like the first essay, these sources must be reputable and academic. If you try to use sources like bartleby.com, owlcation.com, supersummary.com, enotes.com, etc., you will lose significant points on this assignment.  For this essay, you are limited to writing about one of the following stories: “The Lottery” starting on pg. 336 of textbook “The Yellow Wallpaper” starting on pg. 434 of textbook “Hills Like White Elephants” starting on pg. 75 of textbook Length requirement: This essay needs to be a minimum of 1800 words (not counting the Works Cited page). You will lose a point for every 25 words your essay falls below the requirement. These points will be taken off after the rubric has been completed.( Teacher Instructions) I will be using the short story called “Hills Like White Elephants” I will add it as a file so that you could read it also the criticism ill be using is “Feminist Criticism” Also the narrator is going through postpartum depression if you could somehow correlate it in the essay

The Waste Land

“The Waste Land” is a few pages long, but it is highly confusing.  Let’s embrace that! Find at least 2 lines/short passages that are confusing.  What makes them confusing?  What different interpretations could one reasonably have about the lines/passages?  Why would Eliot want to make us feel confused about the subject of the lines/passages? NOTE: I don’t buy the idea that Eliot is “leaving it open for the reader to decide.”  If that is your goal, you listen, not write.  If you bother to write something, it is because you have something you want to communicate to your readers.  Why would Eliot want to communicate a sense of confusion? A lot of websites try to explain the poem (though some do a better job of this than others).  They won’t help you here, because they attempt to give answers and your goal here is to raise questions.

Ancient Greek

The most important primary text material on which you need to focus your study are Books 1, 6, 9, 16, 18, 19, and 22. PREPARATION QUESTIONS 1. Why does Agamemnon think that he has the right to take Achilleus’ war prize, Briseis?  Why, from his point of view, is it so important to take Achilleus’ prize?  What is his reasoning?   2. Why does Achilleus think that Agamemnon does not have the right to take his prize?  Why, from Achilleus’ point of view, is it so significant that Agamemnon took his prize?  What is Achilleus’ reasoning? 3. What is tim? in the Iliad?  What is the connection between a man’s war prizes on the one hand, and his honour, value, rank, status, and reputation on the other hand? 4. In the Iliad, are the values of Achilleus fundamentally different from the values of Agamemnon, or are their values fundamentally the same?  In what sense are their values the same and in what sense are they different? 5.? In Book 9, why does Agamemnon send an embassy to Achilleus’ ships?  Does he do it to apologize to Achilleus?  Does he ask anyone to apologize to Achilleus?   6. In Book 9, Nestor advises Agamemnon to offer “gifts of friendship” to Achilleus.  Why?  What are the ancient Greek words that Nestor uses?   7. In Book 9, Agamemnon tells Nestor that he will offer to Achilleus “gifts in abundance”?  What are the ancient Greek words that Agamemnon uses, which have been mistranslated as “gifts in abundance”?  What do they really mean?  What do these words suggest to you about how Agamemnon views Achilleus?  Does Agamemnon follow Nestor’s advice in offering “gifts of friendship”? 8. In Book 9, what does Odysseus tell Achilleus Agamemnon offers him?  What ancient Greek words does Odysseus use, and why?  How is Odysseus’ offer different from what Agamemnon said he would offer?  How does Achilleus respond to Odysseus?  Why does Achilleus respond this way?  What does Achilleus’ response tell you about how he views Agamemnon? 9. In Book 9, what does Phoinix tell Achilleus that Agamemnon offers him?  What ancient Greek word does Phoinix use, and why?  Does Achilleus accept Phoinix’s offer? 10. In Book 9, Aias does not follow Agamemnon, Nestor, Odysseus, or Phoinix, but tries a new strategy in speaking with Achilleus.  What does Aias tell Achilleus that Agamemnon offers him?  What ancient Greek word does Aias use?  How is Aias’ strategy to persuade Achilleus to return to battle different from Odysseus’ Phoinix’s attempts?  How does Achilleus respond to Aias? 11. Does any member of the embassy tell Achillleus what Agamemnon actually said he would offer?  Why?  And why does Achilleus reject all of the offers from all of the members of the embassy?  What does Achilleus want as compensation for the seizure of Briseis? 12. In Book 9, what does Achilleus’ responses to Odysseus, Phoinix, and Aias tell you about Achilleus’ relationship with Agamemnon?  What does his response tell you about Achilleus’ relationship to those whom he calls the “dearest of all the Achaians”? 13. In Book 18, why does Achilleus decide to return to battle?  Is it because he wants to repair the relationship with Agamemnon?  Or does he return for some other reason?  What is this other reason?  What event has had such a critical impact on Achilleus, and why has Achilleus been impacted in this way? 14. In Book 19 at the assembly, what does Agamemnon tell Achilleus that he offers him at line 138?  What ancient Greek words does he use for “gifts in abundance”?  Has Agamemnon changed his position from Book 9? 15. What is Achilleus’ response to Agamemnon’s offer in Book 19?  Does Achilleus’ response to Agamemnon show that he views the conflict between him and Agamemnon as resolved?  Or has Achilleus been forced to push his hatred for Agamemnon aside in order to address a more urgent need?  What is this more urgent need, and is it possible for Achilleus to address it without reentering battle?  Or does he have to fight? Note 1: The above questions are intended to help you to generate the content that you need in order to write one coherent, focused, and unified response that addresses the main essay assignment question.  It is not sufficient to answer each bulleted question one-by-one and then to submit these answers as an essay.  After you have responded to these questions, you will need to shape your responses into one unified paper that responds effectively to the main assignment question. Note 2: To answer the above questions effectively, you need to engage seriously with the Iliad in light of the content discussed in lectures and tutorials.  While no marks will be deducted for using the Internet provided that you reference all of your sources properly, you should be aware that you will still need to offer support for your argument from the assigned edition of the Iliad, in light of the material discussed in lectures and tutorials.  In this sense, Internet material does not replace, but only adds to, the work that you have to do.

Persuasive Writing

Week 8 Assignment Editing and Revision Notes Attached from the Instructor  Persuasive Essay Final Draft This assignment calls for you to revise your Persuasive Essay from week six into a final draft.  All good writers revise their work, often multiple times. Revising isn’t just looking for grammatical errors; editing alone is not revision (though we do want you to edit too). Revision literally means to “see again.” In the revision process, you improve your analytical skills, sometimes challenging your own ideas which can serve to deepen your argument. Review the feedback your instructor provided on your rough draft as well as the information from the peer review in week seven.  As you begin revising your paper, be sure to consider the following: ·         Did I fulfill the assignment criteria? ·         Did I say what I intended to say? ·         Do I have a two-sided topic? ·         Is my thesis persuasive in nature? ·         Do all my paragraphs serve to support my thesis? ·         Is my argument convincing, my support logical, my evidence sufficient? ·         Does my conclusion sum up the essay?

Concept Of Individuality

Examine Ibsen’s “A Doll House,” focusing on the way in which the playwright dramatizes the interconnection between the internal and the external. To what extent are the main characters of the work able to establish a balance between internal and external selves, and why does that matter? How important is the concept of individuality in defining each character’s response to his/her situation? What internal changes does each character undergo throughout the work, and to what extent does the author validate, or criticize, those changes? Does the context of the work affect its point? Why or why not? How does Ibsen use dramatic irony to develop this concept, and how does that prepare readers for the ending of the work? What is the overall point of the play, and how does the author structure the work around this concept of internal/external as a way of dramatizing that point?  These questions are intended as guidelines, not as strict requirements, so do not try too hard to answer every one of them in the order in which they are presented. You can assume that your reader  is familiar with the work, so you do not need to summarize it; you should, however, incorporate textual references and citations to support your argument, making sure to use correct MLA format. Remember that your assignment is to analyze the work, not to respond to it in a personal way.  Please do not do research for your paper; I am interested in your analysis, not that of the critics/experts. As I note in the policy statement for this class, the rules of academic honesty apply in all contexts, including this paper, and because I am asking you not to include the ideas of others (even if you change the wording) in this assignment, you need to follow the guidelines. If you copy and paste from an online source without acknowledging that you are doing so, you are plagiarizing and will fail this course.
