This conflict can be whatever you imagine, and the relationship can be between any two people of your choice. Here are some questions to keep in mind while writing. ( not to answer )Does the story enter the conversation late?Does it keep dialogue tags simple or is there too many? What about descriptive beats? Is there enough or too much?Does each character sound distinct? Where? Where not?Jumping off that, Does the story develop character relationship? This we learn in the things they say and how they say it?Does the story show and not tell?Does the story bounce back and forth, or does one talk too long and too much?Read the story out loud. How does it sound? Clunky or awkward? Do the jokes not land quite right? Where? How can they improve it?Can any dialogue be removed? In other words, would narration be better at any moment? (think of the short narrative bits in “Hills Like White Elephants”

Children Literature
Directions –Read the following chapters in Essentials of Childrens Literature, 9th edition. –Chapter 8: Fantasy and Science Fiction –Chapter 9: Realistic Fiction –Chapter 10: Historical Fiction –Chapter 12: “Literature for a Diverse Society” –Go to a library or a good book store. The GCC library has many Newbery Award winners on reserve for your perusal. You need to read three Newbery Award winning chapter books. I prefer you choose books that cover three different genres as explained in the chapters read for this assignment from our course textbook (example: one book that is fantasy, one that is historical, and one that is representing a diverse society). –Write a response for each of the three selections you read. –Use Reader Response Theory to write your responses. Reader Response Theory is a theory that asserts in the end, it is the informed reader, the text in that readers hands, and the analysis that occurs which informs a reader. Think about it this way: A response is your thoughtful reaction to the text. What did you like? What puzzled you? How do you think children would react? How might you use these books and their themes in a classroom setting or at home? Would the settings affect the approach? How do these works compare to other chapter books you have encountered? Above all, enjoy the books. They are award winners because they are the favorites of children, and I hope youll find inspiration therein as well. Rubric Your response essay must: –show evidence of you having read Chapters 8, 9, 10 and 12 from Essentials of Childrens Literature 9th edition and three Newbery Award winning chapter books. –be a minimum of 1000 words. –utilize MLA manuscript format. –utilize MLA-style in-text citations from the stories and any other sources you have used. include an MLA-style work cited for the stories and any other sources you have used. –have a title. –utilize first person point of view/expressive I and/or third person (he, she, it). –not use second person point of view you. –utilize college level mechanics. –have no misspellings.v

Instructions for Paper 3 Here are the instructions for Paper 3. 1. Read chapter 6 in Gardner very carefully. (One of the sample poems in chapter 6 is by T. S. Eliot. It’s a great poem, but it’s long and complicated. Please don’t choose it for your paper.) 2. Throughout The Gardner text, there are many poems including those on pages 10, 19, 61, 64, 68, 73, and 105. Read all of these poems. In addition I have attached 3 poems to this email. Please read them carefully as they are all suitable for you to write about. I particularly recommend Mother to Son. 3. Paper 3 is in 2 parts. For Part 1, choose 5 poems from the text and the attachments. In 3 or 4 sentences for each poem state why the poem is suitable to teach to a first year college class. Think about subject matter, length for how the poem could be taught in a 50-minute period, language, stylistic devices. Keep your responses to 3 or 4 brief sentences. For Part 2, choose one of your five poems. Write 500 words on why you think it would be a good poem to teach a first year college class, and why you particularly like this poem more than the others. Analyze the poem. What is it about? Who is the speaker? To whom is the speaker speaking? What is the point of view? How is the poem structured? Does the structure reflect the meaning of the poem? What stylistic devices like metaphors are used? What effect do they have? Support everything you say with examples from your chosen poem. The book for the paper is Reading and Writing about Literature 4th edition by Janet E. Gardner and Joanne Diaz.

ICSM 10800-04 / Fall 2020 S.A. DelaneyUnit 2: What Do We Mean When We Talk About Anxiety? upd. 10/6According to a national survey published in February 2019 by the Pew Research Center, anxiety and depression rank as one of the top concerns for US teenagers. Numerous reportsincluding this one from Pewassert that anxiety was on the rise among college students prior to the pandemic, and we know that our current situation has only exacerbated this state. But what do we mean by anxiety? What feelings and experiences are encompassed by this term? What does it mean to identify as a person with anxiety? Well draw on ideas from disability studies and intersectionality in our conversations. The Unit will conclude with a formal analytical argument of 1200-1500 words worth 20 percent of the overall course grade. What Do You Mean By A Formal Analytical Argument? We often use the word argument to mean the exchange of strong opinions, and when writing for school, it generally refers to a persuasive essayone that has a clear thesis statement and relevant supporting evidence. In Unit 1, I pushed you to step away from that thesis-support (e.g., five-paragraph essay) style of writing in order to more fully explore and explain your thinking. The analytical argument Im asking you to write for Unit 2 will combine these modes to create a richer, more complex essay. What Do You Mean By Analysis? In their textbook Writing Analytically David Rosenwasser and Jill Stephen offer this four-part definition of analysis, which is worth quoting at length:1. Analysis seeks to discover what something means. An analytical argument makes claims for how something might be best understood and in what context.2. Analysis deliberately delays evaluation and judgment.3. Analysis begins in and values uncertainty rather than starting from settled convictions.4. Analytical arguments are usually pluralistic; they tend to try on more than one way of thinking abouthow something might be best understood. (Rosenwasser and Stephen 6-7)Analysis, then, starts with inquiry: questions followed by careful observation. To delay evaluation and judgment requires that we acknowledge and bracket our gut reactionswe must stay with the problem longer, seeing it from every possible perspective, considering what may seem counterintuitive. Only then can we arrive at a reasoned, thoughtful conclusion.Whos Our Audience For This Essay?Beyond the obvious answerme, your professoryour imagined audience for this essay is the journal Inquiries, which describes itself as an open-access academic journal that highlights the work of students at the undergraduate level and above. Consider this assignment an opportunity to prepare a scholarly essay for possible submission to this journal. As part of our activities, well look more closely at the journals website and its expectations. What Kind Of Research Will We Have To Do?Your analysis will focus on one specific conversation about anxiety. That conversation may have taken place in a more traditional magazine or newspaper, on social media, on a cable news show, or elsewhere. It needs to be a conversation that you can capture and study in detail. As with your first essay, you may find it necessary to narrow your focus to make your analysis more manageable. How Should I Cite My Sources?Youll need to use formal MLA citation style for this essay. That means that in addition to including all sources on the Works Cited, you need to fully and formally introduce all of your sources, as weve been practicing. Any and all ideas and details should be directly attributed to the appropriate source (According to political reporter Joe Blow of the New York Times…). In addition, youll want to provide parenthetical in-text citations (or PITCs) as needed.ICSM 10800-04 / Fall 2020S.A. DelaneyWorks CitedHorowitz, Juliana Menasce, and Nikki Graf.
