As a final paper for this course, you will assemble a set of sources on a minor language (one with a million or fewer speakers) and summarize what you learn from them in a 10-page report. The report will be organized into three parts: Social and Historical Context, Linguistic Structure, and Language Vitality. In the first part (approximately 2 pages), you will briefly describe the people who speak the language, the area where it is spoken, and its genetic affiliation. Here you will discuss things like how many speakers the language has and which main dialects can be identified. In the second part (approximately 5 pages) you will describe and 4 exemplify the main features of the language’s grammar (sounds, word structures, and sentence structures), using the terms that have been developed throughout the course. In the third part (approximately 3 pages) you will provide an assessment of the language’s vitality based on the kinds of measures we have discussed in class. This includes answer questions like: Do the speakers use the language for commerce or schooling? Is there written documents / literature in the language? What is its level of prestige of the language within the local linguistic landscape? What historical circumstances might be threatening the language’s continued existence? Have these circumstances been changing recently, or do you see them as likely to change in the future? Your final project report must be accompanied by an annotated bibliography. This is a list of references in which each is summarized in a short paragraph description. Drafts of your report and annotated bibliography will be due one part at a time on specified dates during the semester. Your information sources may include some web materials, but your report should not be entirely web-based: you will have to do serious library research for this project.

Your essay should address these two major points (though your essay does not need to be structured like these points): Does this person have a language pathology? If so, what is that pathology? Please explain what details of the description made you decide on your diagnosis (and against others, if applicable). Please find and cite academic references (books or research articles, ideally) that support your diagnosis. What (if anything) should be done about this person’s language pathology? Please give details for any interventions that you suggest. For example:                                                                i.      Surgery: What type, and what are the risks?                                                              ii.      Medication: What kind(s)?                                                            iii.      Speech and language therapy: What type(s) or approach(es), with what methods and goals, and how often?                                                            iv.      Augmentative and assistive communication: Which device(s) and/or method(s)?                                                              v.      Physical therapy: What methods and goals, and how often? Note that you may not need all of these options, and that you may need other options not listed here. These are intended merely as illustrating examples. Please find and cite academic references (books or research articles, ideally) that support your plan of treatment or management.

1. Here are two conversations between a mother and a small child from the CHILDES database. The first involves a child who is 1 year and 6 months, and the second who is around 3. Each is looking at the same picture book created by the researcher, Dr. Susan Geldman. 2. Analyze each interaction separately. In each case explain what strategies the mother uses to teach her daughter words and concepts linked to animals in the book called Animal Friends. (A pdf of the book is attached to this assignment.) How successful is the mother in supporting her child’s language learning in an age-appropriate way? (In other words, do you think that the child is learning something?) Then write a paragraph (or two) comparing and contrasting the strategies used for a child who is 18 months, and a child who is a little over 3. 3. SUGGESTION FOR ORGANIZATION: Create subheadings consisting of a limited number of strategies you have chosen. In each case explain how the strategy works supports language learning and provide examples from the data.

1.    When evaluating the English language learner’s oral language sample, you will be using the two rubrics listed above for oral language: (a) a holistic scoring rubric: Holistic Oral Language Scoring Rubric and (b) an analytic scoring rubric: the Student Oral Language Observation Matrix (SOLOM).When evaluating the English language learner’s written language sample, you will be using the two rubrics: (a) Holistic Scoring Rubric for Writing and (b) Analytic Scoring Rubric for Writing 2.    The oral language section and the written language section should each include the following components: o   A discussion around each individual aspect of each rubric that you use. For this final argument, you will select one specific subject that greatly interests and also has a sizable amount of public interest, about which you will develop a well-researched, well-written, and ultimately, convincing argument. You can choose any subject you wish, but I would highly recommend narrowing down your subject to a specific aspect of a broader topic that might currently be being debated, which you can approach in a more substantive manner. I would also urge you to pick a subject you have a real interest in, as it will make for a much more rewarding experience for you, and undoubtedly a more compelling argument. It may also be a topic in which you have personal expertise, but it does not have to be. You will need to get pre-approval on your specific topic several weeks prior to the date it will be due. You will also be asked to submit an outline and preliminary sources at a midway point in your research. This lengthier argument piece will employ skills typically used for a research paper, incorporating MLA style sourcing using citations in a bibliography. However, because this should also be able to be read as a stand-alone piece, you will need to make clear the points you are making and support you are presenting in your argument in the piece itself, rather than relying on the readers to go to the source material for edification. Your research, of course, will include secondary sources, using the library and the Internet, and, should also include primary research, meaning the inclusion of your own experiences and positions on your topic, as well as others you may choose to interview. For this second-person perspective, you will want to seek out both experts and everyday people who have something to say or at stake in regard to whatever topic you’ve chosen. Like you, they will be able to weigh in and provide their insights and opinions. MUST USE IN TEXT CITATIONS
