Sociologist

You are a sociologist, and you notice that the juveniles in your area are starting to cause legal problems and are beginning to overload the juvenile court system. There are several theories that explain why juveniles become delinquent. Some of the sociological theories include anomie, social disorganization, drift theory, and differential association theory. Locate a sociological theory (it does not have to be one of the theories listed previously), and explain that theory with its relation to juvenile delinquency. Please note that sociological theories relate to society and external influences over a juvenile, not psychological influences (which relate to internalization within a person) or biological influences (which concern physical problems).Once you decide on a theory, describe how it relates to juveniles by explaining what the theory believes causes the juvenile problems. Explain what you could do in your position to aid in alleviating these problems.

Criminological Research

Maxfield & Babbie, Chapters 4 & 7 ·  Pearson, Chapter 2 ·  Hartley, Chapter 2     After you read the assigned chapters, what types of research methods (various types of survey methods and experimental ones, as well as several qualitative methods) are more popular or suitable in criminological research?  Please explain your answers. To adopt an appropriate research design, what are conditions/situations that should be considered first? (The reasons authors chose their research methods in the research paper published in Hartley’s p. 111-126 (the optional textbook) may provide you with some good information.)  If you do not buy the optional textbook, you may find the journal article (in Hartley’s book) through an online journal library, Here is its full information: Batton, Candice, and Kadleck, Colleen. 2004. “Theoretical and Methodological Issues in Racial Profiling Research.” Vol. 7 (1), Police Quarterly, pp: 30-64.

Victim Advocacy

Prior to your graduation from AIU, you have been working as the Victims’ Assistant Advocate for the office of the local county prosecutor. You have a great working relationship with the prosecutor, Mary, and the remainder of the office. Normally, when you speak, the staff and the prosecutor know that you are speaking from a knowledge base that you have gained from personal experience, research, and reading, so they know that your comments are facts. You like to use APA format to cite your sources, but this bulleted paper does not need to be in APA format. You have decided to speak with the prosecutor, Mary, on behalf of Maureen, a college student who was a victim of date rape. You want to convince Mary to support a change in the prosecutor’s policy of not prosecuting date rape cases when drugs or alcohol are involved. Maureen has a strict policy: When someone wants to speak with her about changing an established policy, she wants the person to submit a paper of 3–5 pages containing topic bullets that outline his or her argument for the policy change prior to meeting her. This way she feels that she is not blind-sided, and that she has an opportunity to research the topic prior to the meeting. You follow her policy and write a paper using bullets only, hoping that you can persuade Mary and the chief prosecutor to change their policy or, at a minimum, meet with you for a discussion about changing the policy. Maureen knows that other young women are being attacked and that, very often, date rape drugs are being used.Mary has agreed to review your policy change letter if you write it. You write the policy change paper in which you have the following goals:Educate Mary about date rape using statistics and information about date rape and date rape drugs to show her that Maureen is one of the types of victims who perpetrators take advantage of in these situations.Explain why not prosecuting the cases is the wrong public and social policy. (You are also hopeful that the victim, Maureen, also receives help in her case.)To organize your efforts before your meeting, create a detailed outline where appropriate that contains information for the following 5 topics in 3-5 pages:List crime statistics reported by Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) and the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) relating to rape and the strengths and weaknesses of each type of reporting.Define the term date rape (or acquaintance rape; the terms are interchangeable) and how date rape is distinguished from stranger rape, statutory rape, and spousal rape.List the types and uses of date rape drugs.Describe the victim–offender relationship, including the following:How victims are viewed by perpetrators of date rapeThe special problems of date rape prosecutionsHow society and jurors may view date rape (e.g., blaming the victim based on the perceived precipitation, facilitation, or provocation of the victim)What is your position on this issue, and what action do you think would impact this social policy?Use the library, Internet, and other resources available to you to conduct your research. Provide APA citations and references.

Managing A Crime Scene

As you read through the required materials for this week you should come to realize that when approaching and managing a crime scene, each type of physical evidence requires different techniques for identifying, documenting, and collecting that evidence. Using the required readings for this week, choose a specific type of physical evidence. Find two additional credible sources from the Ashford University Library, or another credible source, that relates to your chosen type of evidence. As you complete your post, keep in mind that the chain of custody must be maintained for all evidence. Include the following elements in your initial post: Examine how that type of evidence is recognized and identified at the crime scene. Specify how the position of that type of evidence is documented in relation to the overall crime scene. Specify how that evidence is collected from the crime scene. Discuss any field tests used for your chosen type of evidence. Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length using APA 6th edition formatting. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or credible sources, and properly cite any references. The Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.) table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. If you have questions about whether a specific source is appropriate for this assignment, please contact your instructor. Your instructor has the final say about the appropriateness of a specific source for a particular assignment. For more information on Managing A Crime Scene read this:

Victim Advocate

You are a Victim’s Advocate for persons who have been sexually assaulted.  You have been very effective in recent past cases where police were unable to obtain significant information from victims of sexual assault.  When you provided advocacy service to these victims you discovered that police interviews were done in a manner that indicated they (police) were in charge and that the victim needed to cooperate if he or she was to be believed and wanted anything done about the reported crime. The Chief of Major Crimes has noted that you have been successful in providing information obtained from the victims that were unsuccessfully interviewed by the detectives in the respective investigations. The Chief of Major Crimes wants you to explain why the police interviews of the victims are not successful and what the major crimes detectives can do to increase their effectiveness in interviewing the victims.   Focus your discussion on the following: Prepare a list of the most important factors that police officers should include in their victim interview strategy of those who are reporting they have been sexually assaulted.   Explain why it is important to modify the interview based on the factors that you listed.
